Poetry Writing Bootcamp for Beginners

Three-part workshop on July 12, 19, and 26.

Authors Among Us

Facilitated by Joan Kruger

Designed especially for poetry novices, this workshop is “basic training” for those interested in writing poetry but aren’t sure where to begin. This workshop is for beginners (or “beginners-plus”), and focuses on giving and receiving constructive feedback on our work, as well as offering exercises, writing prompts, and some tips on how to read poetry, as we learn some basic techniques.  Bring a poem to share at the first meeting; if you don’t have one, that’s okay too, as we’ll be writing in class! Get comfortable with a tall glass of lemonade and start writing!  For adults 18+.

As a poet with many years of teaching experience, Joan Kruger offers many skills related to creative writing, fiction, critical thinking, composition, writing for publication and reviews of the arts. Editing and technical writing round out her experience.

This program series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Library System and participating member libraries.

Sign up at July 12 entry.

Read n' Greet Book Club

This months Read n' Greet location will be on the patio at More Perecca's, like the R+G Facebook page for updates. Space is limited so register below.

This ain't your mama's bookclub! (Well, actually your mom can come too) We meet once a month to discuss new cutting edge literature in a relaxed environment. We greet, we read, we eat, we drink!

Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue Call it a recession novel, or an immigrant tale -- both are true. In 2007, Manhattan-based Cameroonian immigrant Jende Jonga gets a job chauffeuring for Lehman Brothers executive Clark Edwards, easing the financial strain on his family. At first, all goes well, but problems in the Edwards' marriage lead to problems for the Jongas, and when Lehman falls, both families are caught up in the terrible aftermath. The Jongas -- at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder, fearing deportation -- have much more to lose than the wealthy Edwards family, but together provide a perspective on the accessibility (or lack thereof) of the American Dream, as well as a poignant look at globalization and immigrant life
