Curly Hair Care: A Workshop for Multiracial Families

Today there are a number of overwhelming product selections and tools flooding the market promising to transform your child’s beautiful natural/curly hair. The challenge is choosing the right product and when the right time, as well as having the time, to set aside for a seemingly lengthy haircare ritual.

This workshop will give you the basics of simplifying your haircare routine and product choices. The goal is to take the stress and pain out of “Wash Day” and equip you with the knowledge to have a successful journey to your child loving their hair. Taught by Lavida Barkley of Coiled: A Texture Salon.

Join us for a discussion of the book The Almost Sisters by Joshilyn Jackson. New book club members are always welcome. Request a copy of the books online or at any SCPL location.

"With empathy, grace, humor, and piercing insight, the author of Gods in Alabama pens a powerful, emotionally resonant novel of the South that confronts the truth about privilege, family, and the distinctions between perception and reality---the stories we tell ourselves about our origins and who we really are. Superheroes have always been Leia Birch Briggs' weakness. One tequila-soaked night at a comics convention, the usually level-headed graphic novelist is swept off her barstool by a handsome and anonymous Batman. It turns out the caped crusader has left her with more than just a nice, fuzzy memory. She's having a baby boy--an unexpected but not unhappy development in the thirty-eight year-old's life. But before Leia can break the news of her impending single-motherhood (including the fact that her baby is biracial) to her conventional, Southern family, her step-sister Rachel's marriage implodes. Worse, she learns her beloved ninety-year-old grandmother, Birchie, is losing her mind, and she's been hiding her dementia with the help of Wattie, her best friend since girlhood. Leia returns to Alabama to put her grandmother's affairs in order, clean out the big Victorian that has been in the Birch family for generations, and tell her family that she's pregnant. Yet just when Leia thinks she's got it all under control, she learns that illness is not the only thing Birchie's been hiding. Tucked in the attic is a dangerous secret with roots that reach all the way back to the Civil War. Its exposure threatens the family's freedom and future, and it will change everything about how Leia sees herself and her sister, her son and his missing father, and the world she thinks she knows"--.

Books Sandwiched In

The Revolutionary Genius of Plants: A New Understanding of Plant Intelligence and Behavior, by Stefano Mancuso, reviewed by Anita Sanchez, author of In Praise of Poison Ivy, and returning environmental educator.

Who thought that plant physiology could be so much fun! Neurobiologist Mancuso considers the fundamental differences between plants and animals and challenges our assumptions about which is the higher form of life. Do plants have intelligence? Do they have memory? They make up eighty percent of the weight of all living things on earth, and are responsible for not only the air that let’s us survive, but for many of our comforts: our medicine, our food supply, and even our fossil fuels. This is an enlightening and optimistic book to read.

Better Angels Style Debate -Bring your best arguments!

CANCELED

Launched in 2016, Better Angels is a bipartisan citizen’s movement to unify our divided nation. By bringing red and blue Americans together into a working alliance, Better Angels builds new ways to talk to one another, participate together in public life, and influence the direction of the nation. For more information visit https://www.better-angels.org/

Better Angels Style Debate about a political topic YOU chose!

You probably haven’t experienced anything like a Better Angels Debate. It’s not a political debate, where competing candidates attempt to win votes. Nor is it a high school or college debate, where people advocate positions in which they may not believe for the sole purpose of vanquishing their foes.

A Better Angels Debate is a highly structured conversation in which a group of people think together, listen carefully to one another, and allow themselves to be touched and perhaps changed by each other’s ideas. When done well, everyone walks out a little closer to the truth, more aware of the validity in opposing views, and with tighter community relationships.YOU will chose the topics for this debate, two topics altogether. Bring your best arguments and let's start the DEBATE!

CANCELLED - Fall Parenting Series:Cool Down Space?

Join us for investigating a “Cozy Corner” tool as a way to help teach your child to calm their body. When children experience strong emotions they often have a hard time knowing what to do next. Providing a safe space for a child to let these feelings out helps them learn coping skills that they can use out in the world.  Together we will look at and play with some of the tools represented in this area and learn how you can incorporate this space in your own home. This workshop is lead and child care provided by the Capital District Child Care Council. Dinner will be served prior to workshop.
