When the Emperor was Devine by Julie Otsuka. The debut novel from the PEN/Faulkner AWard Winning author of The Buddha in the Attic. Otsuka researched historical sources and her own grandparents' experiences as background for this spare yet poignant first novel about the  ordeal of a Japanese family sent to an internment camp during World War II.

This workshop will explore the dynamic connection between collage and writing. You will have the opportunity to make a collage and choose a variety of images to stimulate your imagination. Those who don’t want to make a collage can write directly from images. There will be writing prompts and examples of poems with rich images. No prior experience in collage making or writing is required. All art supplies will be provided.
