Writing for Wellness

This workshop is designed to help participants learn how to use writing as a tool for coping, deeper insight and expression.  In each workshop, participants are invited to engage in a series of writing activities that are pragmatic and expressive: exercises that they can continue to use long after the workshop is over, for their own growth and development. The workshops are lively, with varied exercises and lots of time for discussion to process how the activities worked for the participants and how they might be expanded upon or adapted for their private use.

Participants are encouraged to keep journals, which we will start using immediately. At the beginning we will talk a little about the research surrounding using writing as a wellness tool, as a way of providing evidence and context for how effective writing can be as a tool.  Participants will be invited to share their thoughts and writing, but will not be expected to share anything that feels too personal.

Taught by Elaine Handley

PrivileGEd – Experiences From My Unusual Career with GE with author Michael Davi

GE Engineer- turned-author, Michael Davi, will present an overview of his new book, “PrivileGEd – Experiences From My Unusual 40-Year Career with One of America’s Most Iconic Companies”.

Davi's family history with GE dates back nearly a century, starting with his Italian immigrant grandparents. In this memoir, Davi explores his own story as a professional with General Electric. Utilizing photos and graphics, Davi outlines how life afforded him opportunities his grandparents and parents did not have. Uncanny coincidences abound as do unusual work circumstances, fascinating characters, global adventure, and drama, creating an inspiring tale which the author hopes will prove inspirational to others.

Michael A. Davi was professionally employed by General Electric for 40 years. As the first in his family to graduate college, earning an engineering degree, Davi’s education opened doors of opportunity he never dreamed possible, including working with top experts at GE. Now retired, Davi has authored his first book, "PrivileGEd" to document his story. In addition to inspiring a new generation to consider STEM careers, he also hopes to motivate others to tell their stories as well.
