Butterfly Project - Paint for tolerance

For All Ages - There is no cost to participate in this program - Butterflies are limited by site. One Butterfly per registered person. If you are planning to have multiple people in your group paint butterflies, you must enter the total number of people who will be painting butterflies in your group. Thank you,

The Allegheny County Library Association has partnered with the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh to participate in the Butterfly Project. The Butterfly Project is a San Diego-based initiative that has set out to paint one ceramic butterfly for each of the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust, and we are working to add to the count. The Holocaust Center will hold a butterfly painting session June 22nd at the library this summer. Participants in the Butterfly Project will learn about children who died in the Holocaust and receive a card with the story of a specific child. The participants will then paint a butterfly, perhaps inspired by the story of that child. As they learn about children lost in the Holocaust, we will challenge the community to embrace difference and to fight against bigotry and intolerance happening now. We will also offer support to children and families in underserved areas of the city. The completed butterflies will be displayed in participating libraries as part of a city-wide exhibit, and there will also be a free end-of-summer celebration to bring together all participants in the project.

For Ages 12-19

Participants will be able to select a disguised book based solely on notes written on the brown paper covering. These books are all new books that were released in the past few years. Instead of waiting until the end of the summer to get a book to keep, you can get one in June. What is the trick? You don't get to remove the paper cover until after you leave the library! Choose wisely! There is only one book per person.

If you write a critique of the book, following a basic outline, you will receive a ticket to enter a drawing for a $20 gift card.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover Storytime

For Families

A special storytime for families. Children will bring a stuffed animal who wants to camp out overnight at the library. Children will make a name tag for their special stuffie and put them to sleep. Of course, stuffies at a campout never stay asleep for long! They will wake up, read, play with the toys and might even play on the computers! Ms. Nicole will take photos of their shenanigans and post them in the library!
