Virtual Visit: Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village

Travel back 19,000 years from the comfort of your couch! At this virtual program, Dave Scofield, Executive Director of the Meadowcroft Rockshelter & Historic Village, will highlight the history of the site and what you may see during your visit. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more!

Meditation for Everyone--Ongoing Series

If you have not yet attended this program, please email Beth at the Library for introductory materials/information before joining. lawryb2@einetwork.net

This is an ongoing program. Please register. A Zoom link will be emailed to you for the month. The program is free, though donations through the Library's website is welcome.

Carve 30 minutes out of your week to learn simple and practical meditation techniques that can easily be applied in everyday life. Science based benefits of meditation include reduced stress and anxiety levels, improved mood, increased self-awareness, increased energy, memory boost, healthy sleep habits, increased immunity and unconditional joy. Through the practice of meditation, we cultivate inner peace, harmony and well-being. Each session will include a brief discussion and experiential practice. Session includes handouts  to support your home practice. All levels of meditators welcome.

Teacher Cynthia Ballard is grateful to have discovered the gift of yoga and meditation while navigating through an illness over 20 years ago. She found the practices so beneficial in managing her symptoms that she began to share with others through her experience. Cynthia is a 500+ hour certified yoga teacher specializing in meditation, relaxation, hatha yoga, yoga nidra, restorative yoga, and mobility practices. Cynthia has taught at a local yoga studio for over 14 years and has been volunteering at Our Clubhouse (cancer support center) for over 13 years sharing practices for peace and well-being. Cynthia has also shared these practices at the Hillman Cancer Center, MS Society and hospice.

Shaler North Hills Library Writer's Group

Are you a creative writer? Do you want to be? Whether you create short stories, nonfiction, poetry, dialogues, TV Scripts, or existential historical fantasies - everyone who writes likes to belong to a group of like-minded creators for support and accountability.  The Shaler North Hills Library Writer's Group could be a great free resource for you. We will have a writer's prompt in a different genre each month, with some weekly Zoom time to silent write on the 2nd and 3rd Mondays and a reading and critique time on the final Monday of each month.

Please email Jim at jf.binz@gmail.com if you have questions or are ready to join!  The Zoom link will be sent to you prior to our first meeting.

Community-led by Jim Binz. Jim has an MFA in Playwriting from Carnegie-Mellon University and a BA in English Literature from LaRoche University.  He is a long-time resident of the area and, after a 40+ year career in the non-profit sector, is retired and pursuing his dream of writing full-time.  Jim belongs to the Shut Up and Write group and the Pennswriters group and has three plays in consideration for production in various competitions around the US. Jim is married to Cindy (who works at SNHL) and has two grown children and two granddaughters.  Jim is a Vietnam veteran and a member of the SNHL Reader's Theater and Sense and Sound groups.

Virtual Visit: Fort Ligonier

Discover Fort Ligonier! Built in 1758 as winter quarters for soldiers, Fort Ligonier was used to house supplies of the British army and to defend the supply line crucial to the community. It was the last in a string of fortifications that stretched from Philadelphia to a new fort that became Fort Pitt. On display in the Museum is a recreated artillery train that was used to defend the fort and the remains of an 18th century powder magazine, as well as displays about a hospital ward, women’s roles at the hospital, and medical care in the British army during this time period. Plus, every year in October, the community celebrates Ft. Ligonier Days, which includes a reenactment of the October 12, 1758, battle at Ft. Ligonier!

At this virtual program, a representative from Fort Ligonier will highlight the history of the site and what you may see during your visit. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more!

Registration is required. To register, go to:  https://bit.ly/3LTXsl1
