Social Security & Your Retirement
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

~This course is for people nearing retirement and interested in learning more about Social Security claiming options and when to file for benefits. Social Security represents the foundation of retirement income, and properly coordinating it with other income and asset sources is critical to establishing a retirement cash flow that will be sufficient to last throughout one’s retirement years. We will review the changes to Social Security that were enacted in 2015 as part of the Bi-Partisan Budget Act. This law made sweeping changes to claiming options and strategies that need to be understood before filing for benefits.

New England's General Stores: An Author Talk with Ted Reinstein
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

In talking about New England's General Stores, broadcast journalist Ted Reinstein shares the rich and colorful history of this iconic institution, how general stores figured in the rise of early American commerce, why they began to fade, and why--like another New England icon, the diner--they have begun to come back (and even be reinvented and reimagined for a new era). Told with anecdotes from a variety of local landmark stores across the region, the presentation is accompanied by the award-winning photography of Art Donahue.

The presentation will run about 50 minutes and be followed by a Q&A and book signing. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Color Your Stress Away
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Do you like to color? According to the Boston Globe, adult coloring books are flying off of the shelves. In a June 30, 2015 article, Dugan Arnett said, “In a sudden, unexpected, and generally curious development, grown-up versions of the doodle-books used by countless kindergartners have not only become a thing — but the thing, as far as millions of rapt Americans are concerned.”

See what all the excitement is for yourself at our Adult Coloring Event! We'll have a selection of coloring pages for you to choose from, along with markers, colored pencils and gel pens. Join us for a relaxing evening and color your cares away...

The Last Warlord: The Life and Legend of Dostum
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join Professor Brian Glyn Williams as he talks about his trilogy on terrorism, modern warfare, and ancient ethnic groups in the Islamic Eurasian lands where he has done fieldwork.

Professor Brian Glyn Williams has both a scholarly background in Afghanistan and “boots on the ground” credentials. He has traveled extensively in Afghanistan tracking suicide bombers for the CIA's Counter Terrorism Center and doing PSYOPs (Psychological Operations) for the U.S. Army's secretive Joint Information Operations Warfare Command. He also has Hollywood links and the character from his book the Last Warlord appears in the upcoming Afghan-based movie "12 Strong, The True Declassified Story of the Horsesoldiers"

As for his scholarly credentials, Dr. Williams has a PhD in Central Asian Islamic history and is a full professor of Islamic History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and formerly taught Muslim history at the prestigious University of London. His previous books have been reviewed by the Times, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal etc., endorsed by former CIA Director General David Petraeus, and one (Predators. The CIA's Drone War on Al Qaeda) was credited by the British rock band Muse in Rolling Stone with inspiring their bestselling, Grammy-winning album "Drones." Previous books have been published by Oxford University Press, Harper Collins, and the military-focused DC-based commercial press Potomac etc. Dr. Williams has testified in terrorism cases at Guantanamo Bay as an expert witness, wrote a manual for the U.S. Army on Afghanistan that was published in a civilian version as Afghanistan Declassified, and recently traveled to the Mosul region in northern Iraq to assist in freeing a Yazidi slave from her ISIS captor.

In addition to his fieldwork in the Islamic world which ranges from Bosnia and Kosovo to the remote tribal zones of Pakistan and the Himalayan warzone of Kashmir, Dr. Williams has trained U.S. Marines deploying to Afghanistan on tribal history and has lectured at Special Operations Command, MacDill Airbase, and U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command and worked for the Directorate of National Intelligence on chemical and biological terror threats to the U.S. Professor Williams also speaks Russian and Turkish.

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Color Your Stress Away

See what all the excitement is for yourself at our monthly Adult Coloring program! We'll have a selection of coloring pages for you to choose from, along with markers, colored pencils and gel pens. Join us for a relaxing evening and color your cares away...

Author Michael Tougias - U-Boats So Close to Home
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

The Sharon Public Library Veteran's Club is hosting author Michael Tougias as he discusses his book: "U-Boats So Close to Home".  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Sharon Public Library.   All are welcome!  Refreshments.

~On May 19, 1942, a U-boat in the Gulf of Mexico stalked its prey fifty miles from New Orleans. Captained by twenty nine-year-old Iron Cross and King's Cross recipient Erich Wurdemann, the submarine set its sights on the freighter Heredia with sixty-two souls on board.

Most aboard were merchant seamen, but there were also a handful of civilians, including the Downs family: Ray and Ina, and their two children, eight-year-old Sonny and eleven-year-old Lucille. Fast asleep in their berths, the Downs family had no idea that two torpedoes were heading their way. When the ship exploded, chaos ensued--and each family member had to find their own path to survival.

Including original, unpublished material from Commander Wurdemann's war diary, the story provides balance and perspective by chronicling the daring mission of the U-boat--and its commander's decision-making--in the Gulf of Mexico.

An inspiring historical narrative, So Close to Home tells the story of the Downs family as they struggle against sharks, hypothermia, drowning, and dehydration in their effort to survive the aftermath of this deadly attack off the American coast.
