Historic New England: A Tour of the Region's Top 100 National Landmarks
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

National Historic Landmarks are touchstones of our collective past that still resonate with our present. The six New England states have nearly 400 such places. Hoerver, important doesn't always translate into interesting, and so we have Historic New England: A Tour of the Region's Top 100 National Historic Landmarks, those with the most intriguing and rewarding history.

In addition to historic houses and tall ships, Historic New England examines such quirky spots as the country's oldest weather stations, carousels, and sandy beaches. This book will appeal to the historical enthusiast, the armchair traveler, and both local visitors and tourists alike.

Patricia Harris and David Lyon are authors of more than thiry books on travel, food, and art, including Boston, MA, Rhose Island, and Vermonst & New Hampshire in the Food lovers series of books published by the Globe Pequot Press.

The ScienceTellers Present: Wild West
4:00 PM - 4:45 PM

The ScienceTellers will present Wild West: The Mystery of the Golden Piano

Grab your spurs and journey with us to the Wild West, where a legendary bank-robbing outlaw is back in town, about to strike again! After the Sheriff mysteriously vanishes, two young kids must saddle up to foil the great heist — but not before stopping a runaway train, escaping an abandoned mine shaft and discovering how a mysterious piano can play an ‘instrumental’ part in putting a rotten cowboy back behind bars.

Throughout this absolutely wild adventure story, volunteers from the audience will help us explore the fascinating science behind chemical reactions, combustion, air pressure, inertia and more. Don’t miss this classic action-packed western with ‘notes’ of science! Our program content addresses Next Generation Science Standards PS1 & PS2.

Wingmasters: World of Owls, Ages 6+
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Wingmasters will present World of Owls, appropriate for ages 6 and older. Owls are not evil spirits, wise little philosphers or Walt Disney creations. Nor do they wing about carrying messages, despite the way they're depicted in the Harry Potter books. In fact, owls are pobaby more misunderstood than any other kind of bird. These are hunting birds, yet their sharp beaks and talons are partly hidden under feathers. Owls have more and softer feathers than other birds, and this unique plumage gives them a plump, rounded look. Add an upright posture and huge eyes set in front like ours, and you have what looks irresistibly like a small, bemused person wearing a fur coat. In reality, owls are superbly adapted nocturnal hunters. This program shows how owls use their specialized powers of sight, hearing and flight to survive and thrive. A wealth of facts and folklore about these masters of the dark explains the natural and unnatural history of owls. A variety of live owls provides the focus of the presentation. For more information, please visit Wingmasters online at: http://www.wingmasters.net/aboutus.htm

Length: 60 minutes
Ages: 6-18

Author Michael Tougias - Above and Beyond
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

The Sharon Public Library Veteran's Club invite you to a presentation of the book "Above and Beyond: JFK and the U-2 Pilots During the Cuban Missile Crisis" by co-authors Casey Sherman and Michael Tougias.

The presentation chronicles the thirteen harrowing days of the Cuban Missile Crisis and then outlines the steps President Kennedy made to reach a decision on a course of action. Special emphasis is given to the heroes of the crisis: the U-2 pilots who flew unarmed over Cuba to secure the photographic proof that the Soviets were installing nuclear missiles on the island. These pilots helped President Kennedy achieve a difficult objective: have the nuclear missiles removed from Cuba without triggering Armageddon.

JFK secretly recorded every meeting conducted during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  These transcripts, as well as recently declassified CIA documents, form the basis of this fascinating analysis into JFK’s successful decision making. Tougias has interviewed the U-2 pilots who discovered the missiles eliciting special insights that have remained undisclosed in the intervening 53 years. The presentation includes four lesser-known events that nearly put us on the brink of nuclear war:

 • The shoot-down of Major Rudolph Anderson who was killed in his U-2 by a Soviet Surface to Air Missile over Cuba.

 • The accidental incursion of a U-2 from Alaska into Soviet air space, and the chase that ensued, including fighter jets with nuclear tipped missiles.

• The Russian submarine commander who wanted to launch his nuclear torpedo when the Americans tried to force him to the surface.

• Two days before the death of Major Anderson, another U-2 pilot barely escaped being killed by Soviet SAM’s over Cuba, yet our government covered up this event and put a gag-order on the pilot.  Tougias will explain the theories why this happened, and the potential consequences.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Sharon Public Library.

Author Talk: Ted Reinstein
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Local writer Ted Reinstein will give a presentation about his new book, New England's General Stores: Exploring an American Classic (Globe Pequot Press/Oct. 2018, co-author Anne-Marie Dorning).

In talking about New England's General Stores, broadcast journalist Ted Reinstein shares the rich and colorful history of this iconic institution, how general stores figured in the rise of early American commerce, why they began to fade, and why--like another New England icon, the diner--they have begun to come back (and even be reinvented and reimagined for a new era). Told with anecdotes from a variety of local landmark stores across the region, the presentation is accompanied by the award-winning photography of Art Donahue.

The presentation will run about 50 minutes and be followed by a Q&A and book signing. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Color Your Stress Away
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Do you like to color? According to the Boston Globe, adult coloring books are flying off of the shelves. In a June 30, 2015 article, Dugan Arnett said, “In a sudden, unexpected, and generally curious development, grown-up versions of the doodle-books used by countless kindergartners have not only become a thing — but the thing, as far as millions of rapt Americans are concerned.”

See what all the excitement is for yourself at our Adult Coloring Event! We'll have a selection of coloring pages for you to choose from, along with markers, colored pencils and gel pens. Join us for a relaxing evening and color your cares away...
