Coping with COVID: Strategies for Families

Are you finding it difficult to manage your child’s education at home? Do you see your child struggling and worry because you aren’t sure how to help? You aren’t alone. Barbara Filipe would like to help. She taught her own 5 children at home from preschool through high school graduation. She knows that guiding young minds and bodies toward learning can be one of the most challenging aspects of parenting. Add a pandemic and it gets even harder! Barbara knows that education can be messy but it doesn't need to end in tears. In fact, she aims for giggles. Join Barbara for an interactive, low-pressure, informative evening. You will learn strategies about how to cope with the pandemic without losing your cool or your confidence.

Perfect for remote/hybrid learners, as well as homeschooled kids!

Improv Skills for Teens

Did you know that improvisation isn't just for entertainment? Students who study improvisation train their minds to think more quickly and creatively in a variety of situations. They work better as a team and greatly improve their problem-solving skills. It's also a ton of fun! This improvisation workshop, lead by Meredith Charles of Drama Out of the Box, is designed to challenge and inspire students to stretch their brains and limits. A great class for both the seasoned performer and those new to the world of theatre who are looking to try it out.

This class will meet on Thursdays, December 3 and 17, from 8:00-8:45 pm. Register for one or both sessions.

For students in grades 7-12. Registration required starting November 19.

Peace of Mind Meditation - Inner Peace

We are living in challenging times that can create increased levels of stress, anxiety and worry. Meditation is a tool that can be used to manage our emotions and feelings and allow us to experience inner peace. The Raja Yoga knowledge, shared through this mediation practice, allows us to understand our thinking patterns and use techniques to shift away from deep rooted negative thinking to positive thinking.

Instructor Soni Sayana graduated from RIT, Rochester, NY with a BS in Electrical Engineering and got her Masters in Engineering from Cornell University. She had a 17 year career at Fidelity Investments in Boston and was a VP of Global Network Engineering.  She left Fidelity in 2013 and decided to focus on home life with the family.

In her ‘retired’ life she pursues her passion in the field of Mindfulness, focusing on Meditation. She has been a student of Raja Yoga Meditation since 2011 and shares her practical implementation of meditation practices for a daily experience of a peaceful and happy life. Pre-COVID, she held meditation sessions in senior centers, as well as in a women’s State Prison in Framingham, MA. She is also part of Shine Bright Workshops team which focuses on mindfulness classes in elementary and middle schools.

Soni is a mother of two HS teenage boys at Westwood High and they keep life very entertaining, so she has unlimited opportunities to practice her meditation skills to remain peaceful and happy!

Sponsored by the Friends of the Shrewsbury Public Library.

Book Beats on FB Live

Join Miss Roxanne on the Shrewsbury Public Library Facebook Page for this early literacy music & movement program for preschoolers and their grownups to enjoy together. Miss Roxanne will read (or sing!) a book or two. There will be songs, rhymes, chants, fingerplays and a flannel board. We will use scarves, shaker eggs, and rhythm sticks. If you want to make it even more interactive, have a look around your home before the event for something to use as a scarf (a washcloth or dishtowel?), something that makes a noise (rice in covered plastic container?), and two sticks to clack together (sticks or pencils or wooden spoons?)

In the Car Audiobook Club

Hey families! How about joining a fun book club this winter? We will be reading one book each month - December through February. The idea is that you listen to the book together as a family while driving in your car or spending time together in the house. Then we will meet on Zoom the last Wednesday of each month - December 30, January 27, and February 24 at 7 pm - to have a fun and informal conversation about the book (think less academic and more reading-for-pleasure). You can sign up for just one month or all months. You don't HAVE to listen to the book if that doesn't work for you technology-wise, but you should atleast have read the book aloud together as a family. Audiobooks on CD and/or Playaway (Mp3) format, as well as print copies, will be available to place on hold. This program, and the books we will choose, will be geared to children grades 3-5 and their families. Please email Roxanne, children's librarian, at rstarkin@cwmars.org if you have any questions.

Ask a Muslim Anything with Robert Azzi

“Ask a Muslim Anything” is a program presented by Exeter NH resident Robert Azzi. who finds that most people - even those critical of Islam and Muslims - when engaged  in small scale or in one-one-one conversation, are willing to listen and engage with Muslims if that engagement occurs in what are perceived to be safe places: houses of worship, libraries, schools, civic organizations, etc.

Azzi speaks not as a scholar or academic but as a neighbor, fellow citizen and person of faith.

Azzi travels - these days virtually -  throughout New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Maine at the invitation of local communities to speak about his life, what it’s like to be Muslim in America, how he came to convert to Islam, about the religion of Islam and its history – especially in America – and about the Middle East, terrorism and associated political and social issues.

Nothing, except disrespect, is off the table.

Robert Azzi is a photojournalist, columnist and public speaker who lives in Exeter NH. An Arab American Muslim, he writes on issues of identity, conflict, and Islam, particularly as they apply in the Middle East and the Global South.  Born in New Hampshire, he’s lived
in Beirut, Cairo, Jeddah and New York.

Azzi has been a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University. He's also served terms as a member of the Leadership Council of the Harvard Divinity School and as an advisor to Tufts University’s Fletcher School committee on Islam and South-West Asia.

Today, he is a board member of ACLU-NH.

As a photojournalist he was represented by Magnum Photos and by Woodfin Camp and Associates. Azzi’s work appeared frequently in such publications as Life, Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, Fortune and other domestic and international publications.

Azzi's work was recognized in 2018 when he was awarded  the 2018 Nackey S. Loeb School of Communications’ First Amendment Award.

“People don’t know what they don’t know,” Azzi tells his audience. “I want to open up new perspectives for my readers – especially for those who don’t often agree with me – and expose them to points-of-view  I believe are important and which they might not have previously considered.”

Peace of Mind Meditation – Inner Power

Our world is ever changing and change has become a constant. In order to remain grounded and be able to deal with this constantly changing landscape, we each need to strengthen our inner power. Meditation is a tool that can be used to emerge this inner power, and the Raja Yoga knowledge shared through this meditation practice allows us to understand how to harness and use this power. By understanding our core capabilities, we can learn to emerge these powers to increase inner capacity and remain solidly rooted amongst the winds of change.

Peace of Mind Meditation – Inner Resilience

Our current times requires each one of us to deal with so much uncertainty on a daily basis. In order to roll with the new scenes of life, we each need to reinforce our inner resilience. Meditation is a tool that can be used to become more resilient to changes in life, and Raja Yoga knowledge shared through this mediation practice allows us to understand and recognize our inner powers of resilience to survive and thrive. By leveraging our inner potential, we can learn to strengthen our resilience and flex with the changing times.
