Shrewsbury Writer's Group

Are you working on a short story, a screenplay, essays, or a novel? Is it a story you feel must be told or are you experimenting with something new? Whether you are new to writing, in the middle of several projects, or have published work, this group is for you! The goals of this meetup are to empower each other by offering constructive feedback, encourage one another to push the boundaries of our writing, establish an online presence, and if it's your goal, to get published. We will meet the 3rd Saturday of every month.

Ground Rules:

1. You don't have to have a piece of writing to share in order to attend.

2. Please limit submissions to no more than 4 pages so that we may have time to offer you proper feedback.

3. Bring printed copies of your writing to share, and yes, you are going to have to estimate. If you don't bring enough, that's okay, we can share.

4. Make sure your writing has: your name, the title of the piece, and PAGE NUMBERS. This makes it easier for us to follow along.

5. You are encouraged to read a section of your writing with the group. This is a great way to hear the story through your voice and get a sense of the plot and characters. You are also encouraged to tell us what you'd like us to focus on (e.g. character development, style, structure, flow, etc.).

6. Please be mindful that it is not always easy to share personal writing, so be constructive when offering feedback and refrain from focusing on mechanical issues. The reader can check those when they receive everyone's marked copies.

Judith Walz has been organizing and running events and groups long before Meetup.com was a thing. She's a teacher turned entrepreneur who took her passion for traveling around the world and writing, and combined it into a successful business. She loves meeting new people and connecting them with each other to form lasting friendships and business connections.

Please register at https://www.meetup.com/ShrewsburyWritersGroup/

Stephen Collins as Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman comes to life in the performance of Stephen Collins. Unlaunch’d Voices, an Evening With Walt Whitman opens with the elderly Whitman on the evening of his seventieth birthday. Whitman begins to reminisce and to question his success as a man and a poet. He talks about his inspiration to write poetry and the experiences that led to the creation of Leaves Of Grass, his lifetime work. Collins hopes to leave you with a greater insight not just into the great man or the great poet, but with an appreciation of Walt Whitman as an eternally free spirit.

Registration required. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Genes and DNA Interest Group

Exploring Genes and DNA

The Exploring Genes and DNA group is designed for adults who are interested in learning more about DNA and genes. At each meeting, we discuss some of the exciting new findings that DNA sequencing is uncovering. Only a very basic understanding of DNA is required. The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month.

December 12th – Microbiomes: we are not alone! Complex communities of microorganisms are proving to be important for our health.

January 9th  – Genetics of gender: chromosomes and some pivotal genes play important roles in gender determination, although they are probably not the whole story.

February 13th  - Mitochondria: mitochondria are widely recognized as the “powerhouses of the cell,” but they contain their own distinctive DNA. We’ll discuss how mitochondrial DNA, which we inherit from our mothers, can be used to follow deep ancestry.

Clare O’Connor recently retired from Boston College, where she taught courses in molecular cell biology and genetics for 23 years.

Registration required.

A great class for both the seasoned performer and those new to the world of theatre who are looking to try it out.

This class will meet four Thursdays in a row on January 10, 17, 24, and 31, from 7:30-8:15 pm. Registering commits you to attending all four sessions.

For students in grades 7-12. Registration required starting December 27.

Did you know that genealogy is one of the most popular pastimes in America?  Well, it is, and we're scheduling an introductory session for newbies!  Now's the time to get started—when it's winter, and you're likely to have more free time on your hands.  You don't need anything more than a bit of curiosity about your family's origins, and a bit of enthusiasm about finding out just where your ancestors came from!  George C. Brown, former librarian here, will lead you through the first steps in the journey to discover your forebears—those brave folks who left their homes in other parts of the world to come to America.  Mr. Brown has decades of experience he'll share with you, and lots of insights that will speed you along the way!  You'll go home with all you need to start the journey!

Drop in!

Self Myo-fascial Release Techniques

Learn Self Myo-fascial Release techniques to ease pain and improve posture and range of motion.  In this two-week session, you will learn how to utilize various simple tools such as a tennis ball, foam roller/pvc pipe and other items to work out knots and adhesions in your body.  You will learn the key areas to address for maximum benefit and be given guidance in figuring out your specific problem areas that may need more attention on a regular basis.  The goal will be to help you start to understand how these restrictions impede your posture and cause pain, as well as provide guidance for working on better posture and movement.  Participants will need to bring a yoga mat and be able to get up and down from the floor (there are some modifications if you unable to do so).
