Shrewsbury Writer's Group
Group Study Room D
Are you working on a short story, a screenplay, essays, or a novel? Is it a story you feel must be told or are you experimenting with something new? Whether you are new to writing, in the middle of several projects, or have published work, this group is for you! The goals of this meetup are to empower each other by offering constructive feedback, encourage one another to push the boundaries of our writing, establish an online presence, and if it's your goal, to get published. We will meet the 3rd Saturday of every month.

Ground Rules:

1. You don't have to have a piece of writing to share in order to attend.

2. Please limit submissions to no more than 4 pages so that we may have time to offer you proper feedback.

3. Bring printed copies of your writing to share, and yes, you are going to have to estimate. If you don't bring enough, that's okay, we can share.

4. Make sure your writing has: your name, the title of the piece, and PAGE NUMBERS. This makes it easier for us to follow along.

5. You are encouraged to read a section of your writing with the group. This is a great way to hear the story through your voice and get a sense of the plot and characters. You are also encouraged to tell us what you'd like us to focus on (e.g. character development, style, structure, flow, etc.).

6. Please be mindful that it is not always easy to share personal writing, so be constructive when offering feedback and refrain from focusing on mechanical issues. The reader can check those when they receive everyone's marked copies.

Judith Walz has been organizing and running events and groups long before Meetup.com was a thing. She's a teacher turned entrepreneur who took her passion for traveling around the world and writing, and combined it into a successful business. She loves meeting new people and connecting them with each other to form lasting friendships and business connections.

Please register at https://www.meetup.com/ShrewsburyWritersGroup/

World War II Letters

In May 2017, Corinne Smith found her mother's stash of more than 100 letters from 16 servicemen she had corresponded with in 1944-1945. Corinne began to trace the soldiers' family trees with one goal in mind: to return the letters in person to their children. This presentation links history and genealogy to present-day research and diligence. It revisits a time that we may not want to forget. And it may prompt others to wonder for themselves what treasures lurk in their own old family boxes, and how they can share the information with others.

Corinne H. Smith is a writer who is originally from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She served for several years on the board of The Blair County Genealogical Society in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The first book she compiled was a self-published family history titled "From Saxony to the Lehigh Valley: The Descendants of Ludwig Hossfeld" (1992). Since then, she has written several books about American author Henry David Thoreau. She lives in Gardner, Massachusetts.

Genes and DNA Interest Group

Exploring Genes and DNA

It’s been less than 50 years since scientists discovered how to sequence DNA, the “code” of life. Since then, rapid advances in sequencing technology have produced an explosion of sequence information that is providing new insights into our understanding of human history, biological diversity, cell function and disease. Practical applications of this new knowledge are transforming the practices of genealogy, medicine and agriculture.

The Exploring Genes and DNA group is designed for adults who are interested in learning more about DNA and genes. Only a very basic understanding of DNA is required. The group will meet three times in the fall to discuss DNA ancestry kits (Sept. 12), the genetics of cancer (Oct. 10) and the genetics of food (Nov. 14) We’ll also devote a portion of each meeting to discussing “Genes in the News:” articles found by participants in newspapers and other media sources.

Clare O'Connor has a Ph.D. in biology from Purdue University. She did postdoctoral work at Caltech and UCLA before leading her own research lab at the Worcester Foundation in Shrewsbury from 1984-1995. She was a professor in the biology department at Boston College from 1995 until her recent retirement. At Boston College, she taught The Genetic Century, an introductory genetics course for students who were not majoring in the sciences, for 10 years.

Shrewsbury Writer's Group
Study Room D
