Shinrin-yoku or Forest Bathing

De-stress from the busy modern world by connecting to nature on a guided Forest Bathing walk! Forest Bathing is a slow mindful walk that focuses on our senses and the nature around us. The walk includes activities to help us connect with the natural world. We will stop to gather and sit and reflect on our experience. The walk will be two hours long and includes a tea ceremony at the conclusion.

Forest Bathing is an ancient practice in Japan called Shinrin-Yoku, which literally means, “forest bathing”. Spending time in the forest promotes healing and wellness. Research shows forest bathing lowers cortisol levels and blood pressure among other benefits.

Join Linda Pietropaolo, a Certified Forest Bathing Guide trained by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy on a forest bathing walk.

What to Bring

Bring water. Wear comfortable clothing and good shoes for walking on trails. Bring anything else you may want to be comfortable outdoors and possibly sit on the ground (hat, neck warmer, mittens, etc.) I will have yoga mats squares to sit on.

Cold Weather

Please dress in layers for cooler weather and consider hat, neck warmer, mittens, warm socks etc. Wear one more layer than you may think you need because we will be moving slowly.

Rainy Weather

The walk will still proceed if it is raining. If it is a downpour or storm the walk will be canceled for that day. If it is raining, wearing a waterproof jacket and pants is important to stay dry and warm. You can also bring an umbrella if you like.

Linda will lead the walk in the Prospect Park area.

Middle Period Beethoven-Talk by Robert Oakan
Beethoven is widely acknowledged as a towering genius among composers of Classical music.  In spite of his gradual loss of hearing, which began in his late 20's, he continued to write music of the very highest quality.  In this four-part course (a continuation of this past Spring's "Early Beethoven") we will focus on how his tragic deafness seems to have shaped the works written during his middle period.

A retired Clinical Psychologist, Robert Oakan has taught Classical music history courses for many years at Northwestern Connecticut Community College, as well as at the Westborough and Shrewsbury libraries. Registration required.

Read to A Dog -- Session 1

EACH CHILD MAY REGISTER FOR ONE 10 MINUTE "READING APPOINTMENT"

Read to a Dog programs are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers or children who need to practice their independent reading skills, especially those who love being with dogs!

Volunteers and dogs are trained and certified in a pet therapy program provided by Paws for People - a non-profit organization associated with the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Owner and dog scheduled for today: Margaret and Scout. This program is for children who can already read. Registration is required.

Please note: Due to the complexities of scheduling a dog's visit to the library, the program must have a minimum of 3 participating readers. In the event that registrations do not meet this requirement, the program will be cancelled. Cancellations will be posted in red at the top above.

Middle Period Beethoven-Talk by Robert Oaken
Beethoven is widely acknowledged as a towering genius among composers of Classical music.  In spite of his gradual loss of hearing, which began in his late 20's, he continued to write music of the very highest quality.  In this four-part course (a continuation of this past Spring's "Early Beethoven") we will focus on how his tragic deafness seems to have shaped the works written during his middle period.

A retired Clinical Psychologist, Robert Oakan has taught Classical music history courses for many years at Northwestern Connecticut Community College, as well as at the Westborough and Shrewsbury libraries. Registration required.

Positive Discipline: Fostering Prosocial Behavior

Positive Discipline is a program developed by Dr. Jane Nelsen. It is based on the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs and designed to teach young people to become responsible, respectful and resourceful members of their communities. Positive Discipline teaches important social and life skills in a manner that is deeply respectful and encouraging for both children and adults.

This workshop series helps parents (and related adults) understand their child’s development pattern. It provides tools and techniques to guide children’s social and emotional development with a long term sustainable goal to develop life skills and characteristics.

These workshops will highlight the following-

1.    Developing an understanding of the root cause of behaviors using real-life situations

2.    Developing self-regulation in children by creating an awareness of their capability

3.    Developing an appreciation  for the power of choice and freedom within limits

4.    Developing positive verbal and emotional communication styles

5.    Setting realistic expectations for children to encourage successful outcomes

6.    Developing effective strategies to handle challenging behaviors

7.    Identifying conflict about-to-happen and proactively applying effective mediation techniques

8.    Nurturing mutual respect, cooperation, and building resilience

9.    Tips and tools to practice positive discipline

10.  Develop respectful relationships

These sessions will help both the parents and their kids to be set-up to succeed, although these are adults-only sessions.

About Asiya Peerzade-

Asiya Peerzade has been working in the field of Montessori early childhood education for about 18 years now. Her desire to learn more about early childhood development attracted her to a Montessori style of education. Having undergone extensive Montessori training, Positive Discipline Parent Coach training, undertaking graduate courses at Worcester State University in Early Childhood Education and her innate passion helped her gain an in-depth understanding of the physical, social, and, emotional development of children. Ever since completing her Montessori education, she has been working in partnership with the parents.

As a first-time mom, and, a teacher, Asiya had a fair share of struggles and challenges and experimented with various approaches. With time and experience and taking courses in behavior management, she has been able to develop tools for parents who are coping with the challenges of raising children. She has been able to understand the fundamental needs of children due to her association with a multicultural and diverse group of children and parents in her career.

In response to the demand for advice and guidance sought out by parents to help them be supportive of child upbringing, Asiya has conducted workshops for parents through the town’s recreational department and at Montessori conferences and at her school. She has been doing these workshops for the past five years. She believes in providing honest, clear and precise information along with coaching the parents how to be supportive of their child’s development.
