Tech Teardown

Ever wonder what's inside of the technology you use every day? In this ALL-AGES workshop, we'll work together to dismantle common gadgets like personal electronics, keyboards, phones and high-tech toys to look at the bit's and bob's that make our technology work...and share some snacks while we're at it! We all use technology every day and it's easy to think that all this stuff kind of works by magic - but our gadgets are made up of simpler components that work together. Taking things apart, connects us to our technology, demystifies it, and gives us a better idea of how things work. Once we've taken it all apart, we'll use hot glue to make one of a kind junkbot's yours to keep. Or, for a real challenge, try reassembling your gadget to get it working again.! Children are welcome, but those under 10 years old must be accompanied by a parent. This program is sponsored by The Friends Of The Shrewsbury Public Library.

Read to a Dog

Read to a Dog programs are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers or children who need to practice their independent reading skills, especially those who love being with dogs!

Volunteers and dogs are trained and certified in a pet therapy program provided by Paws for People - a non-profit organization associated with the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Owner and dog scheduled for today: Margaret and Scout.

This program is for children who can already read. Registration is required.

Please note: Due to the complexities of scheduling a dog's visit to the library, the program must have a maximum of 3 participating readers. In the event that registrations do not meet this requirement, the program will be cancelled. Cancellations will be posted in red at the top above.

The Taste of Others    R– France – 1999.

Romantic comedy of manners set in France's rustic Provence. An unpolished and ultra-pragmatic industrialist reluctantly attends a play in order to see his niece play a bit part. He is taken with the play's strangely familiar-looking leading lady. He remembers that he once hired and then promptly fired the actress as an English language tutor. He immediately goes out and signs up for language lessons. Thinking that he is nothing but an ill-tempered philistine with bad taste he is rejected, but soon charms her off her feet

Time Management - You are meant to be good at it

In our modern day living, we often find ourselves at odds with time - compete with the clock time, juggle many activities at once, and struggle to fit in something we know is good for us, sometimes stressed out, burnt out or frustrated. If you see yourself in this description, then welcome to the “Time Management - You are Meant to be Good at it” workshop. Coach Jing Yao has experienced those odds with time herself and is leading this workshop where you will explore together:

  • Your current challenges with time

  • Discover that time is a friend, not an enemy

  • Deepen your existing insights on how to manage time better

  • Take away a simple practice that most effectively aligns you with time

  • Feel good about yourself in relation to time

Registration required.?

Author talk- Dad's at work and Mom can't drive

Shrewsbury resident Henry Grampietro is the author of the book Dad's at work and Mom can't drive. It's a book about growing up in the fifties in Shrewsbury.  He will be here to discuss his book.

Description fo the book on amazon: Take a trip back to the nostalgic fifties, when you could go to the movies for 25 cents and see a double feature. An innocent time when all we had to worry about was being home for five o'clock because supper was on the table. A time when T.V. was clean yet still funny. A time when girls were the only ones with ponytails, when every street corner had a little mom and pop store and your parents gave you a note to buy cigarettes for them. A time when our sports heroes had names like Rocky, Mickey, Willie and The Duke. A time when the New York Yankees and the Boston Celtics seemed to win every year. This is a look back at a simpler time. A time when mothers were home and dads went to work. A time that has long since passed.

Designing Scavenger Hunts For Your Kids

Escape Rooms are so 2017!  Scavenger hunts are the "it" puzzle for 2018!  And you can make one for your kids!  Join local dad, Brendan Mahan, as he guides you in creating a scavenger hunt for your kids.  You will learn how to structure the scavenger hunt, explore ways to make the creation process easier, and discover some excellent places around Shrewsbury to use in your own hunt.  You will learn how to address multiple learning areas through your hunt, from logical puzzle solving, to social/emotional skills and resilience.  You will even learn ways to use the activity to get your kids to open up and talk to you!  Brendan Mahan, M.Ed., M.S. knows his approach to creating scavenger hunts works because he's done it with his eight-year-old twin sons.  They had a great time, and your kids will too!

Promise is Hope-Musical Performance by Folk Duo
Ashley and Eric L’Esperance first felt the electricity of their undeniable chemistry at an impromptu song swap. A year and a half later they were married and released their debut album “Where We’ve Been & Where We’re Going.” Jessica Phaneuf, WUMB, says “I listen to A LOT of music, and this [album] would be at the top of the pile.” The Promise is Hope has earned their place among New England’s finest emerging indie-folk duos. Their live performances are often described as beautifully moving, inspired, and connected. With deep reverence for songwriting, the duo’s music explores the mysteries of love, spirituality, and the joys and struggles of life’s journey. These “hometown heroes” won two 2017 Worcester Music Awards and a nomination for 2017 Best of Central Massachusetts “Best Entertainer.” They have captured the hearts of listeners in hundreds of crowds all over New England and the Mid-Atlantic, and are currently writing material for a sophomore album set for release in early 2018.

Shrewsbury Writer's Group
Are you working on a short story, a screenplay, essays, or a novel? Is it a story you feel must be told or are you experimenting with something new? Whether you are new to writing, in the middle of several projects, or have published work, this group is for you! The goals of this meetup are to empower each other by offering constructive feedback, encourage one another to push the boundaries of our writing, establish an online presence, and if it's your goal, to get published. We will meet the 3rd Saturday of every month.

Ground Rules:

1. You don't have to have a piece of writing to share in order to attend.

2. Please limit submissions to no more than 4 pages so that we may have time to offer you proper feedback.

3. Bring printed copies of your writing to share, and yes, you are going to have to estimate. If you don't bring enough, that's okay, we can share.

4. Make sure your writing has: your name, the title of the piece, and PAGE NUMBERS. This makes it easier for us to follow along.

5. You are encouraged to read a section of your writing with the group. This is a great way to hear the story through your voice and get a sense of the plot and characters. You are also encouraged to tell us what you'd like us to focus on (e.g. character development, style, structure, flow, etc.).

6. Please be mindful that it is not always easy to share personal writing, so be constructive when offering feedback and refrain from focusing on mechanical issues. The reader can check those when they receive everyone's marked copies.

Judith Walz has been organizing and running events and groups long before Meetup.com was a thing. She's a teacher turned entrepreneur who took her passion for traveling around the world and writing, and combined it into a successful business. She loves meeting new people and connecting them with each other to form lasting friendships and business connections.

Please register at https://www.meetup.com/ShrewsburyWritersGroup/

ADHD Essentials

ADHD affects roughly 10% of the population, not to mention the people who love them!  Join Brendan Mahan, from ADHD Essentials for a discussion about those very essentials. We will look at ADHD from a developmental and skill-building perspective, and address the challenging behaviors associated with it.  We will also look at how the ADHD brain differs from a typical brain, briefly examine the role executive function plays in ADHD, and explore why it leads to repeated failure. Once the foundation is set, we will consider the emotional impact repeated failure has on those who suffer from the disorder, and address ways to better manage ADHD in children and adults.  Strategies to address common ADHD challenges will be addressed throughout the workshop, and further expanded upon to conclude the session.  Brendan Mahan, M.Ed., M.S. is an internationally recognized expert on ADHD, and a highly engaging speaker.  You can learn more about his work at his website: www.ADHDessentials.com.
