Non-Fiction Book Club

Join Reference Librarian, Cecelia Becker, for a discussion of Marianne Monson's Frontier Grit: The Unlikely True Stories of Daring Pioneer Women.

Discover the stories of twelve women who heard the call to settle the west and who came from all points of the globe to begin their journey. These are gripping miniature dramas of good-hearted women, selfless providers, courageous immigrants and migrants, and women with skills too innumerable to list. Many were crusaders for social justice and women's rights. All endured hardships, overcame obstacles, broke barriers, and changed the world. The author ties the stories of these pioneer women to the experiences of women today with the hope that they will be inspired to live boldly and bravely and to fill their own lives with vision, faith, and fortitude. To live with grit.

Copies of the book will be available at the Library. Please call 860-763-3501 to reserve your copy and register for this event.

Cozy Mystery Book Bunch

Join us to discuss The Secret, Book & Scone Society, the first book in the Miracle Springs, North Carolina mystery series.

Strangers flock to Miracle Springs hoping it can cure their ills. They often find their way to Miracle Books, where they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That’s Nora’s special talent—prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person’s deepest pain. When a businessman reaches out to Nora for guidance, she knows exactly which novels will help. But before he can keep their appointment at Miracle Books, he’s found dead on the train tracks. Stunned, Nora forms the Secret, Book, and Scone Society. Determined to uncover the truth behind the businessman’s demise, the women meet in Nora’s bookstore to share stories and trade support. And as they untangle a web of corruption, they also discover their own courage, purpose, and a sisterhood that will carry them through every challenge—proving it’s never too late to turn the page and start over . . .

Copies of the book will be available at the library. Please call (860) 763-3501 to sign up.

August Book Discussion: Tara Road

Join Denise Stankovics to discuss Tara Road by Maeve Binchy.

Ria Lynch and Marilyn Vine have never met. Their lives have almost nothing in common. Two more unlikely friends would be hard to find. Yet a chance phone call brings them together and they decide to exchange homes for the summer. They borrow each other's houses, and during the course of that magical summer they find themselves borrowing something of each other's lives, until a story which began with loss and suffering grows into a story of discovery, unexpected friendship and new hope. By the time Ria and Marilyn eventually meet, they find that they have altered the course of each other's lives for ever.

Copies of the book are available at the library. Please call 860-763-3501 to reserve your copy and register for this event.

Join Reference Librarian, Cecelia Becker, for a discussion of William Stone and Barbara Am Ende's Beyond the Deep: Deadly Descent into the World's Most Treacherous Cave.

The Huautla in Mexico is the deepest cave in the Western Hemisphere, possibly the world. Shafts reach skyscraper-depths, caverns are stadium-sized, and sudden floods can drown divers in an instant. With a two-decade obsession, William Stone and his 44-member team entered the sinkhole at Sotano de San Augustin. The first camp settled 2,328 feet below ground in a cavern where headlamps couldn't even illuminate the walls and ceiling. The second camp teetered precariously above an underground canyon where two subterranean rivers collided. But beyond that lay the unknown territory -- a flooded corridor that had blocked all previous comers, claimed a diver's life, and drove the rest of the team back. Except for William Stone and Barbara am Ende, who forged on for 18 more days, with no hope of rescue, to set the record for the deepest cave dive in the Western Hemisphere.

Copies of the book will be available at the Library. Please call 860-763-3501 to reserve your copy and register for this event.
