Walt Whitman - The Father of American Poetry

The Southington Public Library announces a unique Poetry Reading and Discussion Series. This three-part series will offer participants the opportunity to learn more about three important poets: Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, and Pablo Neruda. Each discussion will be led by a poet-scholar. Christine Beck will lead the discussions on Whitman and Neruda and Mark Sheridan will be the featured poet-scholar for the discussion of Robert Frost.

Walt Whitman – The Father of American Poetry
Wednesday, January 24th at 6:30 p.m.
The poet Walt Whitman is often called "The Father of American Poetry." We will examine why this is so.  Whitman's unique style of writing ushered in an era when poets became free to discard the strictures of rhyme and meter to view poetry more expansively. Whitman was a controversial figure in his time, as is the case with many pioneers.  We will examine how his legacy affected the Beat Poets as well as the poets who have read at presidential inaugurations. This workshop will examine a few of Whitman's poems in a detailed "close reading," inviting participants to offer their impressions and insights in the discussion.

Cooking the Books: Sweet & Savory Pies

Do you enjoy browsing through cookbooks and trying new recipes? Do you enjoy tasting new dishes? Then grab your apron and join Southington Library's cookbook club, Cooking the Books!  Check out a Southington Library cookbook on February's topic, Sweet & Savory Pies, and then spend some time experimenting with it. Come to the program on the date posted, ready to share a dish and discuss your experience. If your experiments yield disastrous results, that's okay! Bring it along, anyway!

Participants are encouraged to go green – please bring your own plate, utensils, and serving spoon. Dishes should arrive ready to eat as there is no kitchen facility on hand. Please also bring 16 copies of your recipe to share. Everyone who attends will receive a binder to store their cookbook club recipes.
