Leonard Bernstein- An American Treasure a lecture by Jeffrey Engel

Leonard Bernstein was the most gifted, famous, popular, and successful musician produced by America. He was a virtuoso pianist and conductor, a composer of music ranging from Broadway musicals to the classical repertory, an educator, a lecturer, an author, and a TV personality. There was very little he couldn’t do extremely well.

This lecture will discuss Leonard Bernstein and his influence on American music today. 2018 is the centenary of Bernstein’s birth and it is a good time to celebrate this American treasure.

Jeffrey Engel is a musician and teacher who graduated from Ithaca College. He lived in Paris for fourteen years where he studied cello, art history, and earned diplomas in the French language. As a cellist, he played with numerous orchestras in France including that of the Paris Opera, performed in chamber ensembles, and taught in municipal conservatories. Mr. Engel has been giving lectures devoted to music history in colleges, libraries, retirement communities, and other venues for some twenty years. He believes that such lectures should be entertaining as well as informative.

Chi-Gong Class with Gwen Valencis

Chi-Gong (pronounced chee-gong) is an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique that involves meditation, controlled breathing, and movement exercises. It is meditation-in-motion, clearing the body of energy blocks resulting in physical, mental, and emotional relief.

A practitioner since 2007, Gwen Valencis became certified to teach QiGong in 2017 by world renowned QiGong Master, Dr. Aihan Kuhn of Sarasota, FL.  Gwen has grown to honor and respect real health: a presence of flowing energy and an absence of stress, aches, pain, and disease. Qigong is most popular among middle-aged to older-aged adults. Many practitioners find that it helps them to regain flexibility, strength, and calmness into older age. It might also help increase recovery time from illnesses or traumatic events.

No equipment or mats required, please wear comfortable clothing. Seated modifications are available for comfort.

Much Ado about a Statue? A Community Conversation

An event hosted by Southington Women for Progress and facilitated by the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center.

One year ago, a statue of Christopher Columbus was dedicated in front of Southington's Municipal Center. It quickly became the center of a debate, echoed nationwide, over the nature of public memorials and the values they represent. Join Southington Women for Progress and the Stowe Center for a community conversation reflecting on the meaning of monuments in public spaces and how the stories we tell about the past impact our communities today.

Questions we will discuss include:

  • What does it mean to put up a monument to a person or event in a public space?
  • Whose story is being told?
  • What and who are public spaces for?
  • What impact can monuments have on a community?

The conversation will be facilitated by the Stowe Center and is free and open to all.

About Southington Women for Progress: Southington Women for Progress is a non-partisan group of forward-thinking Southington residents. Echoing the town’s tagline, “City of Progress,” the group is committed to making Southington a more just and equitable place for all residents. More information can be found at www.SouthingtonWomenForProgress.org.

About the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center: The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center preserves and interprets Stowe’s Hartford home and the Center’s historic collections, promotes vibrant discussion of her life and work, and inspires commitment to social justice and positive change.

Fall Book Discussion Series

Carole Shmurak completes the fall mystery series The City By the Bay in this final discussion.

The state of California looms large in the history of mysteries. Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, set in San Francisco, and Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep, set in Los Angeles, essentially began the “hard–boiled” tradition of American mysteries. Last spring, we looked at The City of Angels; now it’s time for mysteries in The City by the Bay. But whatever you do, don’t call it “Frisco”!

Isabel Spellman, PI, is a member of a highly functioning, highly dysfunctional family of private investigators.  Izzy would like to leave the family firm in San Francisco, but first she must solve a fifteen-year-old cold case, which soon becomes the most important case of her life. This was Lisa Lutz’s debut novel, a funny and fast-paced story that became the start of a prize-winning, best-selling series.
