Roundtable: Programing for Adults with Disabilities

Are you looking for or do you have ideas about programs for adults with disabilities? Do you know someone that would benefit from specialized programing focused on their needs? The Southington Public Library, in collaboration with the Southington Parks and Recreation Department, The ARC of Southington, and the Wallingford Parks and Recreation Department, is holding a second roundtable to discuss the need for adult adaptive programing in our area.

The objective of this discussion is to identify what resources are lacking as far as adults with disabilities are concerned. Because services typically end when a child turns eighteen, the need for adult programing is crucial to continue building social, emotional and life skills.  How can we address this as a community with responsible, quality activities designed to enhance the lives of the disabled? The goal of this panel is to expand regional adaptive program choices specific to adults. By combining resources we can serve a wider range of people and offer more programing than by individual towns.

QiGong with Gwen Valencis

QiGong (pronounced chee-gong) is an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique that involves meditation, controlled breathing, and movement exercises. It is meditation-in-motion, clearing the body of energy blocks resulting in physical, mental, and emotional relief.

Based on the fact that QiGong can help reduce stress, lower joint pain, build strength, and stamina, and enhance the immune system, people who can benefit from it most include those with anxiety, muscle aches, learning disabilities, heart disease, fatigue, and older adults that cannot perform intense exercise.

A practitioner since 2007, Gwen Valencis became certified to teach QiGong in 2017 by world renowned QiGong Master, Dr. Aihan Kuhn of Sarasota, FL. As a multi-disciplined athlete, coach, and personal trainer throughout her life, Gwen has grown to honor and respect real health: a presence of flowing energy and an absence of stress, aches, pain, and disease.

Qigong is most popular among middle-aged to older-aged adults. Many practitioners find that it helps them to regain flexibility, strength, and calmness into older age. It might also help increase recovery time from illnesses or traumatic events.

No equipment or mats required, please wear comfortable clothing. Seated modifications are available for comfort.

Fall Book Discussion Series

Popular presenter Carole Shmurak returns to the Southington Public Library with a fall mystery discussion series The City By the Bay.

The state of California looms large in the history of mysteries. Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, set in San Francisco, and Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep, set in Los Angeles, essentially began the “hard–boiled” tradition of American mysteries. Last spring, we looked at The City of Angels; now it’s time for mysteries in The City by the Bay. But whatever you do, don’t call it “Frisco”!

Upon the death of her father, San Francisco-based PI Sharon McCone discovers she's adopted and is determined to find her biological parents. She journeys far from home for answers to the question of who she really is. Marcia Muller is one of the women writers who redefined the mystery genre in the 1970s, and since then she has gotten better and better.

The other two books that will be discussed during this three part series are:

October 9th: Schemers (2009) – Bill Pronzini

November 13th: (2007) The Spellman Files-Lisa Lutz

Fall Book Discussion Series- Part 2

Popular presenter Carole Shmurak returns for the second part of the fall mystery discussion series. Schemers by Bill Pronzini will be the book discussed during this part of the series.

The last book that will be discussed during this three part series is:

November 13th: (2007) The Spellman Files-Lisa Lutz

Cookbook Club: The Flavors of India

Do you enjoy browsing through cookbooks and trying new recipes? Do you enjoy tasting new dishes? Then grab your apron and join Southington Library's cookbook club, Cooking the Books!  Check out a Southington Library cookbook, magazine, or e-book on October's topic, The Flavors of India, and then spend some time experimenting  with it. Come to the program on the date posted, ready to share a dish and discuss your experience. If your experiments yield disastrous results, that's okay! Bring it along, anyway!

Participants are encouraged to go green – please bring your own plate, utensils, and serving spoon. Dishes should arrive ready to eat as there is no kitchen facility on hand. Outlets and extension cords are available for slow cookers. Please also bring 10 copies of your recipe to share. Everyone who attends will receive a binder to store their cookbook club recipes.
