Pie's the Limit (In-person program)

Pittsburgh Summer Reading Program

Pittsburgh Magazine writer Hal Klein will be here to tell tales of Pizza from the Ohio Valley to the Mon Valley--the region is awash in idiosyncratic styles of pizza.  Bring your appetite! If the weather is good, we will meet on the lawn under the tent, if not, we will meet in the Community Center.

Because we are ordering/serving pizza, each person will need to register separately.

The Long Trains Roll - VIRTUAL

Adult Summer Reading

You may know him better as General Grant, but Kenneth Serfass will be with us to discuss a tale of Nazi’s at the Horseshoe Curve.

When the United States entered WWII in late 1941, Altoona became an important part of the war effort being the most important rail connection between the midwest and the east coast's shipping ports. To strike at the Pennsylvania Railroad and specifically the Horseshoe Curve would have hindered America's ability to move troops, war material, and natural resources that we necessary to support the fighting in both theaters.

In June of 1942, four highly trained Nazi saboteurs came ashore in Long Island and tried to move inland to their assigned targets across the eastern seaboard, but were foiled along the way. Horseshoe Curve proved so vital in its military value, that it was fenced off and under 24-hour military guard until 1946.

A fictionalized verison of this tale of espionage was manifested in "The Long Trains Roll" by Stephen Meader, giving a young railroader's personal account of not only working in and around "The Curve" and the Penny's Altoona yard, but fashioning a story about a Nazi spy's attempt to destroy this valuable asset to our inevitable victory over fascism in 1945.

Telling the story as a PRR trainman, Ken will rely on historical research and his own practical experience as a railroad brakeman with the tourist railroad at Strasburg, PA to give a credible account of those on the "Standard Railroad of the World", the Pennsylvania RR, and the stress and excitement of working with steam locomotives in this interesting period.

WONDERFUL WEEKLY WEDNESDAYS

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30TH @ 11:30AM (in-person)

Green reptile as a picture for clipart free image download

NATE'S REPTILE RESCUE...REP-TAILS

We will be meeting at the Community Center...then move to the Pavilion and Tents.

Did you know that Nate is a South Park graduate?

We will be bringing in different types of reptiles from around the world and while each has adapted to survive in their own environments, they still have some similarities. One of these similarities would be the tale of their, well, tails and how they use them to their advantage when they are out in the wild. Turtles, Geckos, Chameleons, Iguanas, Alligators, Snakes, and every other type of reptile have a tail and they all use them in very different ways, but they are much more important than most people would think. What reptiles will Nate bring to the Community Center for all to see?

This will be a great Tails Program for all to see.

Everyone that attends will receive a free Stretchable Lizard.  Amazon.com: Stretchy Lizard Toys, 1 Dozen, Assorted Colors: Industrial & Scientific

*SPACE IS LIMITED AND REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED...THANK YOU!

READ TO THE DOGS ... ZOOM

THURSDAY, JULY 15TH @ 6:30PM - ON ZOOM...

KEEP ON WAGGING!

Join us and our dog friends on ZOOM. The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows kids to practice the skill of reading. By looking at a dog and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, waves to the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.

Clues will be given about the Wonderful Weekly Wednesday Programs (WWW Programs) ...the person who has the most correct answers in the chat will win a prize!!!

*Everyone registered will receive a paperback book (I have 6 of each book...so it will be first come basis)

Teen Program: Science with Holly - Evidence for Impact: the Asteroid's Tale

Teen Program: Science with Holly Workshop One

Join us for two workshops this summer during which we will discover the tale of one of the most exciting tails to ever walk the earth - the dinosaurs!

In our first workshop, we will examine the evidence for an earth-changing event that transformed a dinosaur-supporting planet into a whole new world. We will recreate the "crime scene" - that is, the details of the dino extinction and we'll discover the evidence that led scientists to an asteroid hypothesis. We'll also create our very own asteroid launchers to keep!

This is an in-person event that will be held in our outdoor tent. Space is limited and registration is required.
