CHIA SEED PETS...THURSDAY, MARCH 23RD @ 6:30PM
(this isn't it...just thought it was funny)
National Chia Day!
There’s something so nostalgic about chia seed pets! When I was a kid, I always wanted a chia pet but my parents would never buy one for me. They thought they were a waste of money. The best part about this activity is how it brings reality to such a simple and fun concept: growing seeds to make grassy hair.
This will be a fun and simple activity for the kids on National Chia Day. Kids love to plant seeds and watch them grow – maybe the kids will want to plant a vegetable garden this year? If you don’t have room for a garden, this is a great project for the kids. This is the perfect opportunity to teach them how to appreciate Earth a little more, too!
PLEASE REGISTER BELOW FOR THE CHIA SEED PET PROGRAM...THANKS!

THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN SWITCHED FROM APRIL 12TH
Benjamin Franklin’s Last Bet: The Favorite Founder’s Divisive Death, Enduring Afterlife, and Blueprint for American Prosperity Author, Michael Meyer
April 12 in the Library or Board Room
The incredible story of Benjamin Franklin’s parting gift to the working-class people of Boston and Philadelphia—a deathbed wager that captures the Founder’s American Dream and his lessons for our current, conflicted age.
Benjamin Franklin was not a gambling man. But at the end of his illustrious life, the Founder allowed himself a final wager on the survival of the United States: a gift of two thousand pounds to Boston and Philadelphia, to be lent out to tradesmen over the next two centuries to jump-start their careers. Each loan would be repaid with interest over ten years. If all went according to Franklin’s inventive scheme, the accrued final payout in 1991 would be a windfall.
In Benjamin Franklin’s Last Bet, Michael Meyer traces the evolution of these twin funds as they age alongside America itself, bankrolling woodworkers and silversmiths, trade schools and space races. Over time, Franklin’s wager was misused, neglected, and contested—but never wholly extinguished. With charm and inquisitive flair, Meyer shows how Franklin’s stake in the “leather-apron” class remains in play to this day, and offers an inspiring blueprint for prosperity in our modern era of growing wealth disparity and social divisions.
Michael’s book can be purchased on Amazon or your local book store for $15.99.

The Mount Washington Transit Tunnel Disaster Author Mary Jane Kuffner Hirt
April 26 in the Community Center
On Christmas Eve 1917, an overcrowded, out-of-control streetcar exited the Mount Washington tunnel, crashing into pedestrians. Twenty-three were killed and more than eighty injured in the worst transit incident in Pittsburgh history. The crash scene on Carson Street was chaotic as physicians turned the railway offices into a makeshift hospital and bystanders frantically sought to remove the injured and strewn bodies from the wreckage. Most of the victims, many women and children, were from the close-knit neighborhoods of Knoxville, Beltzhoover and Mount Oliver. In the aftermath, public outrage over the tragedy led to criminal prosecution, civil suits and the bankruptcy of the Pittsburgh Railways Company, which operated the service. Author Mary Jane Kuffner Hirt explores the tragic history of the Mount Washington transit tunnel disaster.

Handel House: History and Highjinx
May 3 in the Community Center
In case you missed October’s presentation, Leonard Marraccini of the South Park Historical Society will be here to talk about the history (some of it spooky) of one of South Park’s most infamous houses—The Handel House on Brownsville Road. Anyone driving on Brownsville Road through South Park has gone past a very historical house. Local folks call it the Handel House. The house was built in three stages. The first in the early 1780s before the Whiskey Rebellion. The house has had numerous owners over the course of time, each adding to the history of the housel. Some local folks have even heard stories involving paranormal activities.
