The Psychology of Book Covers

We all know better than to judge a book by its cover, but with the beautiful, intriguing, and downright bizarre book covers on the market, how can we not? This discussion surveys the evolution of cover art design and investigates how artistic expression and commercialism battle for the covers of books. Through a virtual tour of dozens of covers and several fun brain games, we will explore how a cover can define a book’s identity and how publishers influence our relationship with a book before even opening it. Our instructor, Megan Kappel, is an MFA in Screenwriting, teaches public and professional writing at the University of Pittsburgh. Please call 412-833-5585 to register.

The Prettiest Stars/David Bowie

The phrase ?Glam Rock” refers to a very specific movement in the history of Rock and Roll, limited to a brief timeframe in the early 70s and taking place primarily in Great Britain. Artists such as T.Rex, The Sweet, Slade, Roxy Music, and of course David Bowie, produced hit songs and had a significant cultural influence on fashion, sexuality, and gender. Glam Rock raised questions about authenticity, musicianship, and performance. This history traces the movement from its earliest influences, looks at precedents, spends time with the main artists, and makes a case for the lasting impact of this short-lived phenomenon on rock and roll ever since. Please register 412-833-5585

The Scorpion's Gate by Richard A. Clarke

~~In the Reagan administration, Clarke was the deputy assistant to the secretary of state for intelligence and served as the assistant secretary of state for politico-military affairs in the first Bush administration. He served for eight years as a special assistant to President Clinton and served as national coordinator of security and counter-terrorism for Clinton and for President George W. Bush. With that experience and probably counting on name recognition, Clarke has written his first novel, a geopolitical tale set five years into the future. It deals with a coup that overthrows a number of Saudi Arabian sheiks, the frantic need to procure oil, and the threat of nuclear war by both the U.S and countries in the Middle East. The large cast of characters includes members of British intelligence, the U.S. National Security Agency, the Secret Service, Navy SEALs, and Iranian Revolutionary Guards--an equal number of good guys and bad guys

~~"A novel that brilliantly illuminates some of the darker interconnections between politics and sex . . . Just as the world of Orwell's 1984 gripped our imaginations, so will the world of Atwood's handmaid!" —The Washington Post Book World

"Atwood takes many trends which exist today and stretches them to their logical and chilling conclusions . . . An excellent novel about the directions our lives are taking . . . Read it while it's still allowed." —Houston Chronicle
