PBS Documentary: Don't Tell Anyone
5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

The Seekonk Library has partnered with PBS to bring a new movie experience to the library. Presenting PBS’s POV documentary series at the library! POV believes in the power of film to engage communities in dialogue around the most important social issues of our time. Come to enjoy the film and if it moves you, stay for a discussion on the film afterward.

Monday, November 27, 5:30 PM (Discussion to immediately follow)

Don't Tell Anyone (no le digas nadie) by  Mikaela Shwer

In Don’t Tell Anyone (no le digas a nadie), Angy Rivera had two crucial secrets in her life. The first was that she was an undocumented child living with her mother and siblings in New York City for 19 years. That secret was a constant source of fear: If her immigration status was discovered, she could be deported and her family shattered.

The second secret was more tragic: Rivera had been sexually abused by her stepfather from ages 4 to 8, a secret she eventually revealed and which, in the strange world of immigration law, helped her gain the visa she had always desired.

Director Mikaela Shwer met Rivera, now 24, while the young woman was still undocumented. After the two developed a friendship, Shwer began filming Rivera's quest to help others living in immigration's "shadows" and to gain a visa for herself. The result was Shwer's first full-length documentary.

A co-production of Vision Maker Media and American Documentary | POV.

This Film is Not Rated; 1 hour 15 minutes.

This event is a collaboration with POV, the award-winning independent nonfiction film series on PBS. (www.pbs.org/pov)

Book Group: Can't Make This Stuff Up...
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

The Lion in the Living Room

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: The Lion in the Living Room by Abigail Tucker.

In The Lion in the Living Room, three things come together with exquisite, delightful effect: a natural history of cats, replete with ecological issues as well as contemporary cultural memes; evolutionary science as it pertains to the origins and consequences of our fascination with felines; and an unusually deft way with words by author Abigail Tucker. The net result is a deep and illuminating perspective on our favorite household companion… One hesitates to use the word genius, but Tucker’s book borders on that quality.” -Huffington Post

Fear of Music

Do you love to listen and talk about music as much as we do? Come join us as we listen to, discuss, and tackle music across all genres.

So far our group has mostly been looking back at music from the 70s and older. This month we will jump into the 80s with the Talking Heads's album Fear of Music , which some consider to be among their best work. In the following months we hope to get into progressively more contemporary artist and groups. It will be a very loose theme for the next few months as we explore more modern groups that have a flair for Art Rock.

Our listening group meets on the second to last Tuesday of every month at 6 PM. Come to learn, listen, and/or share!

This program is offered FREE to the public, no registration required.

The Big Short

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: The Big Short by Michael Lewis.

No one writes with more narrative panache about money and finance than Mr. Lewis....[he] does a nimble job of using his subjects’ stories to explicate the greed, idiocies and hypocrisies of a system notably lacking in grown-up supervision....Writing in faintly Tom Wolfe-ian prose, Mr. Lewis does a colorful job of introducing the lay reader to the Darwinian world of the bond market.” -The New York Times

But What If We're Wrong

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: But What If We're Wrong by Chuck Klosterman.

Full of intelligence and insights, as the author gleefully turns ideas upside down to better understand them.... This book will become a popular book club selection because it makes readers think. Replete with lots of nifty, whimsical footnotes, this clever, speculative book challenges our beliefs with jocularity and perspicacity.” -Kirkus Review
