Cranberries & the Cranberry Industry
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Cranberry Harvest

Massachusetts is known for a lot of things. One the more unique industries to literally grow right out of our own backyards is that of the Cranberry. Southeastern Massachusetts and the Cape in places had a unique blend of acidic soil and sandy topsoil that allowed these little red berries to thrive. It hasn't been until recently that growers have figured out how to expand beyond New England into other areas of North America and Chile that we now are able to get cranberry products year round.

Brian Wick joins us from the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association with a talk on Cranberries and the Cranberry industry. He will enlighten us on all there is to know about these little berries and how their industry developed and evolved in our great state. Where did they get their name? Why do they use water to pick them? And much, much more…

Ted Reinstein: New England Notebook
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

New England Notebook Ted Reinstein

Seekonk Public Library is pleased to announce we will be hosting Chronicle reporter and author Ted Reinstein to share stories close to home from his book New England Notebook. This special event will be held in the Large Meeting Room of Seekonk Public Library on Thursday, March 15 at 6:30 PM. Pre-registration is required and is open now to all. Register in the library’s Event Calendar at www.seekonkpl.org.

About the title New England Notebook, Ted shares that after covering every corner of New England for 16 years, he got tired of saying, “I have enough stories to fill a book,” so he picked the best stories and wrote one. The result is an engaging almanac that offers plenty of intriguing tidbits and little-known facts, but goes beyond the merely curious to reveal the heart of what Reinstein calls, “this historic and quintessentially American place.” Looking to buy some medieval armor? In the mood for an orchestra of typewriters? Know where to find America’s oldest baseball diamond? They’re all in New England — and all in New England Notebook. In this book you’ll discover the essence of the region’s unique character, these are the stories not found in guidebooks: the diverse people, memorable places, fascinating history, odd pastimes and delicious foods, quirky collectors, skillful craftsmen, and one-of-a-kind entertainers that distinguish New England from every other place on earth.

Ted Reinstein has been a reporter for “Chronicle,” WCVB-TV/Boston’s award-winning—and America’s longest-running, locally-produced—nightly news magazine since 1997. In addition, he is a regular contributor for the station’s political roundtable show and writes a weekly opinion column. A native of Winthrop, MA, Reinstein received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Brandeis University. He lives just west of Boston with his wife and two daughters.

The Big Short

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: The Big Short by Michael Lewis.

No one writes with more narrative panache about money and finance than Mr. Lewis....[he] does a nimble job of using his subjects’ stories to explicate the greed, idiocies and hypocrisies of a system notably lacking in grown-up supervision....Writing in faintly Tom Wolfe-ian prose, Mr. Lewis does a colorful job of introducing the lay reader to the Darwinian world of the bond market.” -The New York Times

But What If We're Wrong

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: But What If We're Wrong by Chuck Klosterman.

Full of intelligence and insights, as the author gleefully turns ideas upside down to better understand them.... This book will become a popular book club selection because it makes readers think. Replete with lots of nifty, whimsical footnotes, this clever, speculative book challenges our beliefs with jocularity and perspicacity.” -Kirkus Review

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Ruthless River by Holly Fitzgerald.

Both travel memoir and shocking adventure story, like a real-life Survivor or Naked and Afraid . . . A powerful story about survival, love, and faith in the face of impossible odds . . .  Unputdownable . . . absolutely fascinating.” -Library Journal
