Music Documentary & Discussion
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars

Do you love to talk about music as much as we do? Come join us as we watch a music documentary and discuss it at the Seekonk Library.

This month’s documentary is Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars by Zach Niles and Banker White.

If the refugee is today's tragic icon of a war-ravaged world, then Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, a reggae-inflected band born in the camps of West Africa, represents a real-life story of survival and hope. The six-member Refugee All Stars came together in Guinea after civil war forced them from their native Sierra Leone. Traumatized by physical injuries and the brutal loss of family and community, they fight back with the only means they have — music.

This film is not rated; 1 hour and 18 minutes. Discussion to follow immediately after.

We will air the documentary at the library before discussing so there is no need to pre-view the film. Come to learn, listen, and/or share!

This program is offered FREE to the public, no registration required.

Check back for title information on this month's selection.

Massachusetts Walking Tour Concert
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Massachusetts Walking Tour - The annual bipedal concert tour promoting local arts and culture

Since 2010, co-founders Mark Mandeville & Raianne Richards have organized an annual non-profit bipedal concert tour of Massachusetts in support of arts and culture for towns throughout the state. Each free community concert collaborates with local artists, musicians, educational programs, trail managers and land trust groups to highlight both artistic diversity and recreational land use. With each visit, a community has pulled together and taken part in a dialogue which serves to strengthen local investment in the arts.

Yes, they actually do walk with their instruments and camping gear to each and every show. After 8-13 miles of daily hiking roads and trailways, they perform a concert. This year the Seekonk Meadows is one of the stops along their journey!

Each WT event is a collaboration of cultural movers and shakers such as local artists, art organizations, trail volunteers, cultural council members, and school systems for an evening of shared ideas, stories, and song. State grants and private trusts keep the concerts free for the communities they visit. This year's concert is supported by a grant from the Seekonk Cultural Council.

The event is rain or shine and will be held in the library meeting room in the event of rain.

Visit http://masswalkingtour.org/ for more information about the group and the other stops along their 2019 tour.

High Tea at the Library
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

high tea image

Legend has it that afternoon tea began in England in the late 1800s. It became very popular in social circles, and was a great way for ladies to chat about the events of the day. We invite the community of Seekonk to help us recreate that tradition by offering a traditional High Tea at the library. Join us on Saturday, June 29 at 11 AM for High Tea at the Library. Space is limited; pre-registration with a SAILS library card is required.

The presenter for this program, Moonstone Tea Company, is a catering house which specializes in High Tea events. They will be offering samples of sweet and savory treats and their special blend of Paris tea, which incorporates hints of bergamot and lavender. Come prepared to play a traditional parlor game and learn about the history of this wonderful repast. Bring your appetites!  We encourage you to make the most of the occasion and dress up for the event!

Non-Fiction Book Group: Dark Tide
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Join us for a lively discussion of the next book in our narrative non-fiction book group: Dark Tide: The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919 by Stephen Puleo.

On January 15, 1919, a 50-foot-tall steel tank filled with 2.3 million gallons of molasses collapsed on Boston’s waterfront, disgorging its contents as a 15-foot-high wave of molasses that traveled at 35 miles an hour.  A large portion of the North End was destroyed, as well as homes and lives.  Puleo tells a captivating story of corporate greed and immigrant oppression in the early twentieth century.

Walk and Talk Book Club
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Do you want to get outside and add more movement into your day?  Do you also want to meet other book lovers and discuss great novels?  Then check out the new Walk and Talk Book Club at the Seekonk Public Library!  Join us on Tuesday, August 6th at 6 PM at the beginning of the Seekonk Meadows path off the library parking lot.  This month’s book selection is The Almost Sisters by Joshilyn Jackson.  The rain date is Tuesday, August 13th.

Reading doesn’t have to be a sedentary, solitary activity.  Come enjoy a casual, leisurely walk around the gravel trail of the Seekonk Meadows as we discuss both this month’s book selection and books in general.

This program is free and open to all.

Summer Concert: Bill Harley
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Bill Harley

Local favorite, Bill Harley, needs no introduction. Back this year by popular demand Bill entertains us all with his original music and stories. Entertainment Weekly calls him "the Mark Twain of contemporary children's music" but it's hard to say who enjoys his performance more: the kids or the adults.

-

This summer the library brings back its annual concert series outside in the Meadows with four free concerts open to the public. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnics and enjoy these concerts sponsored by The Friends of the Seekonk Library (except where noted). In the event of rain, concerts will be held in the library's meeting room.

Join us Wednesday nights this summer for music in the Meadows!

Owls of MA Nature Walk
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Owls of MA Walk image

Owls are some of the most easily recognizable birds in pictures, but can you recognize signs of them in our own neighborhoods? Come and learn with us in an outdoor program starting from Seekonk Meadows, the Owls of Massachusetts Nature Walk on August 15 at 6 PM. Because this is an evening, outdoor one-hour walk, appropriate dress and flashlights are recommended; this program is intended for participants age 16 and over. In case of rain, this program will meet in the Large Meeting Room. This program is free and open to the public. Please register for program updates in the library’s Events Calendar online.

Teacher Naturalist Jeremy Mombourquette of the Oak Knoll Wildlife Sanctuary will lead the walk. Come learn about the local owl species who live within our communities.  This program will introduce you to their adaptations, sounds, and behaviors.  Participants will learn about why these animals are protected and how they help our communities and neighborhoods stay healthy. Participants will meet at the Seekonk Meadows sign at the top of the library parking lot and continue onto Gammino Pond Trail.
