Read to Cadence - Megan Marshall, a volunteer from Bright Spot Reading Buddies, will bring her dog Cadence to the library to have children read to her. She will be at the library the first Saturday of each month from 11:30am-12:20pm.

Kids ages 4-10 will sign up for a 10 minute slot to read to her friendly, furry companion. Bring a favorite picture book or a chapter book to read to Cadence. This program is designed to help kids gain confidence and reduce anxiety about reading.

Teddy Bear Slumber Party!

Discover Paper Quilling

Chair yoga is a unique form or exercise as it adapts yoga positions while incorporating the use of a chair. The chair replaces the yoga mat and becomes an extension of the body while being used to help with both balance and support. The student is able to warm-up the body safely, and perform yoga poses with support and stability. Chair yoga is suitable for all fitness levels and physical conditions.   • August 22, part 2, will explore search engines, and focus on file management
  • August 29, part 3, will continue working on file management, explore the Invisible Web, and more

Painting in the Park

Discover how fun and relaxing painting in the park can be! We will be doing impressionistic painting in Mason Square's Reading Garden using cotton swabs and other non-traditional supplies.

Adults can enjoy a step-by-step project. Adult painting is suggested for ages 16+, and is limited to 15 participants. Registration is required.

Registration for adults opens August 1st.

Children under 16 are welcome to join us for kid-friendly painting! No registration required for children.

Cursive Writing for Beginners

Read to Cadence - Megan Marshall, a volunteer from Bright Spot Reading Buddies, will bring her dog Cadence to the library to have children read to her. She will be at the library the first Saturday of each month from 11:30am-12:20pm.

Kids ages 4-10 will sign up for a 10 minute slot to read to her friendly, furry companion. Bring a favorite picture book or a chapter book to read to Cadence. This program is designed to help kids gain confidence and reduce anxiety about reading.

Plant Conservation Lecture Series

Native Plant Trust, the nation’s first plant conservation organization, will offer a plant conservation lecture at the Springfield Library. The program, entitled, “Plant Communities of Massachusetts,” will provide an overview of the extraordinary diversity of native plant communities in the state, with example plants and environmental features. The goal is to raise awareness and appreciation of the area’s habitats, to educate about plant communities’ current status, and to encourage ways to conserve local natural resources. This program has piloted as a webinar, with successful engagement. Springfield Library’s program will be part of a larger state-wide initiative called the Plant Conservation Lecture Series, which will offer the program through libraries in several towns throughout Massachusetts.

Picture Books: Starting Conversations with Children about Social Justice

In this workshop, we will explore how to utilize carefully selected books to explore issues of diversity, equity and social justice with children in grades K-6. We will spend time reading a book together and brainstorming the kinds of questions adults might ask children—and which children might ask adults! Following that, participants will have the opportunity to spend time looking at a wide range of picture books on such topics as racism, historical fights for justice, immigration status, experiences of refugees/asylum seekers/immigrants, environmental justice, questioning gender roles, and more. Join us!

Waleska Santiago-Centeno is an elementary (K-6) teacher-librarian with a special interest and expertise in multicultural, social justice, gender, and equity issues; Alice Levine has many years of experience in leading workshops and classes for elementary school parents, and has trained teachers, staff, and parents to utilize books reflecting both local and global diversity.

Chair yoga is a unique form or exercise as it adapts yoga positions while incorporating the use of a chair. The chair replaces the yoga mat and becomes an extension of the body while being used to help with both balance and support. The student is able to warm-up the body safely, and perform yoga poses with support and stability. Chair yoga is suitable for all fitness levels and physical conditions.
