Art Central: Big Larry, Experience and Observation

Mr. Daniels (aka Big Larry) finds inspiration through observation, history, and feeling enabling his style to span hundreds of years. In the three years since he first picked-up a brush, Mr. Daniels has created exceptional pieces that rival established artists in his field. Working exclusively in oil, his approach to time, space, and storytelling reveals a body of work that is fresh and stimulating. His exhibit Experience and Observation is a walk through life as only he knows it. Recently, Mr. Daniels debuted at Art for the Soul Gallery, and on opening day his featured works nearly sold out. One attendee commented: I never knew Larry could paint! He never talked about his work, nor did he ever acknowledge the fact that he was an artist. He truly tells his story and the observations of his experiences since his arrival to the Valley some 30 years ago.

This show is a partnership between the Springfield City Library and Art for the Soul Gallery.

Sewing with a Twist
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
This workshop is intended for ages 9-18.

A sampler is traditionally a cloth embroidered with designs, mottoes, the alphabet, and different types of stitches, to showcase skill. This class takes the idea of a traditional grid sampler and reworks it into a mixed art piece. Participants will design and create their own one of a kind mixed media stitched samplers. We will use fabric, beads, basic embroidery stitches, charms, colored pencils or any other materials that might strike our fancy to create a very personal sampler. No two will be exactly the same.  Please note that participants should feel comfortable handling a needle.

Springfield Cooperative Visioning
11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

This meeting is to build relationships and develop a collective vision around a cooperative ecosystem in Springfield. This will be a grounded form of visioning that engages folks working in cooperatives in thinking together about the world we are working toward with our respective work, and how our visions intersect and interact. It’s an opportunity to take a step back to think big, together, for a purpose. We will be developing a collective vision that will be made visual through the assistance of a graphic facilitator.  We will leave this process with a visual representation of the collective vision and how each of our work fits into it and deeper relationships with one another. If you would like to be involved in this process, please email Jackie at jabrown112@gmail.com

Afterthoughts Book Discussion Group
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Meets the second Thursday of every month | Adults

We select a new book to discuss every month. Library copies of the book will be available at the branch.  This month we will be reading Unsheltered, by Barbara Kingsolver

Summary: How could two hardworking people do everything right in life, a woman asks, and end up destitute? Willa Knox and her husband followed all the rules as responsible parents and professionals, and have nothing to show for it but debts and an inherited brick house that is falling apart. The magazine where Willa worked has folded; the college where her husband had tenure has closed. Their dubious shelter is also the only option for a disabled father-in-law and an exasperating, free-spirited daughter. When the family's one success story, an Ivy-educated son, is uprooted by tragedy he seems likely to join them, with dark complications of his own. In another time, a troubled husband and public servant asks, How can a man tell the truth, and be reviled for it?

Come join us for a lively discussion and meet others who also enjoy reading. New members are always welcome.

WELL WATER: Film Screening and Q&A
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Come join us for a screening of "Well Water", which will be followed by a Q&A with director Sharisse Zeroonian.

The film chronicles the relationship of Ben and Cora, two Massachusetts teenagers who want nothing more than to be older, wiser, and have everything figured out. But as the movie goes on, they learn to slow down and not be in such hurry to become adults. The film also explores the issue of ignorance/prejudice (when it comes to other people's backgrounds, where and how they choose to live).

The film will start screening promptly at 12:30. This event is free and open to everyone, and will be especially great for teens and young adults interested in DIY-filmmaking (parents are welcome, too)!

Stargazing 101, What You Need to Know to Get Started
6:15 PM - 7:30 PM

Ages 15 and up

If you are thinking of participating in the out of this world hobby of stargazing, we have the perfect program for you.   Branch Manager Reggie Wilson will describe various types of telescopes, mounts, and eyepieces to help you select the proper equipment.  Stargazing can be a very expensive hobby and newcomers often make unnecessary, costly purchases. The program will also cover what you can realistically see with a telescope by cutting through manufacturers' inflated claims.

Library staff member Sarah Hodge-Wetherbe will talk about her experience using a bargain telescope.  Are they worth buying or is it just better to save for a better first scope?  On display will be many middle and upper end telescopes to help you figure out what makes sense for you.

This is an after-hours program.

Creative Writing for Social Change
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

This is not a library-sponsored program.

A Free Offering of the Sojourner Truth School for Social Change Leadership.

Sometimes we all need to “talk about things.” Writing is a way to “talk” to yourself. Sharing your writing is a way to “talk” to others. This workshop introduces the benefits of “talking” through writing, particularly as a tool for grappling with social issues. “Creative writing” is broader than poetry and fiction; it also includes brainstorming, journaling, free writes, reflections, and creative nonfiction. While those who enjoy writing will gain new ideas, the workshop will also benefit those who don’t like writing or believe that their writing is not “good.” Class members will participate in a brief demonstration activity that applies creative thinking and writing skills to a current social issue. We will then discuss the benefits of the specific activity. We will also distinguish between the process and the product of writing and what you gained from both. Participants will leave with resources for writing activities that can be used personally or with others—anyone can use them to identify and reflect upon the issues that gnaw at all of us, whether because we struggle with them or because they impassion us.

Led by Trainer Mary Jane Eustace, a climate activist, writer, educator, and attorney.
