Blowing Up Stories
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

This program is for ages 13-19.

Calling all teens! Join us in the Mason Square Teen Room (in the back off the Children's Room) on Wednesday December 5 from 4:00-5:00 for a short story reading like you've never seen before! McSweeney's Publishing is a non-profit publishing house from San Francisco, and publishes one of the most well-known quarterly literary journals filled with masterful short stories in the country. McSweeney's is also known for its creative and innovative printing, and their 53rd edition is no exception. McSweeney's 53rd publication comes with 8 inflatable balloons emblazoned with stories by Percival Everett, Amelia Gray, Lauren Groff, Kima Jones, Carmen Maria Machado, Rebecca Makkai, and Sarah Wisby. The stories can't be read until we blow them up!

Join us as we blow up the balloons, read the stories aloud, eat cupcakes, and decide on our two favorite stories. Those balloons will stay on display in the Teen Room, and 6 lucky raffle winners will go home with their own short story balloons! Cupcakes and beverages are generously provided by the Friends of the Springfield City Library.

"That may not be the version of the story you’re familiar with. But I assure you, it’s the one you need to know.” - Carmen Maria Machado
