Webinar Viewing: Preserving Family Recipies
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Join us for a viewing of the ALCTS Webinar: Preserving Family Recipes
Tuesday, April 24, 2018. The webinar is one hour in length and will begin at 2 pm Eastern time. This webinar is sponsored by the Preservation Outreach Committee for Preservation Week.

Note: This event will be held simultaneously in two locations, at STLS Headquarters and at the Wide Awake Club Library in Fillmore, NY. Group discussion will be help afterwards via GoToMeeting, in order to connect the two groups.

Description: From Uncle’s barbecue sauce to Grandma’s cobbler, family recipes fill us with nostalgia and draw us closer to family—if they have been saved and if they actually work right, that is. So what can you do if a beloved recipe is sketchy, horribly outdated, impossible to read, or unwritten? How can you make sure those old handwritten recipes as well as heirloom photos and kitchen artifacts last for future generations? And did you ever stop to look at your recipes with a historian's eye, exploring what that family recipe may be telling you between the lines? Valerie J. Frey, author of Preserving Family Recipes: How to Save and Celebrate Your Food Traditions (UGA Press), will explore various aspects of your family's heirloom recipes.

Participants will learn:
  • How to care for their family recipe books and sheets, as well as other kitchen artifacts
  • Techniques for translating sketchy, illegible, or unwritten food traditions into usable information
  • How to interpret family recipes from a historical perspective
  • A toolkit for working effectively with these family heirlooms
Presenter:
Valerie J. Frey is a writer and archivist from Athens, Georgia with projects focusing on genealogy, local history, storytelling, material culture, and the everyday home life of our ancestors. Valerie holds degrees from the University of Georgia and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her archives career began with a Junior Fellowship in the Manuscripts Division at the Library of Congress and she went on to serve as an archivist at the Georgia Historical Society, the Savannah Jewish Archives, and the Georgia Archives. She now writes full time. Her most recent book, Preserving Family Recipes: How to Save and Celebrate Your Food Traditions was released in November of 2015 through the University of Georgia Press.

James Baldwin's American
5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

SUNY Alfred State and Alfred Box of Books Library with funding and support from Humanities New York will be presenting a Reading and Discussion Program on James Baldwin’s America.  This six week program will run on each Tuesday afternoon from 5 to 6:30 p.m.  March 20 through Tuesday, April 24. This reading series will meet at the Alfred Box of Books Library and will be led by SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus Joseph Flynn.  Joe introduced the first courses in Afro- American literature at Alfred State in the early 1970s and remains an active scholar in that field.

James Baldwin was an American writer and novelist whose works are socially relevant narratives on race and class struggles in America.  Born in Harlem in 1924, the grandson of a slave, Baldwin grew up in poverty.  His early experiences gave him a lens for viewing the world and writing on social issues.  Notes of a Native Son a collection of essays was published 60 years ago.

Our reading and discussions will focus on Baldwin’s essays, poems and short stories and will give participants an opportunity to understand the historical events surrounding Baldwin’s writings, his view of race and class struggles in America, and how these conversations are still relevant today.

Interested participants are asked to email Alfred Box of Books Library at Alfred@stls.org no later than Friday March 9.  Please include name, occupation, email and telephone number and tell us why this group would help you in your work, community or family.   Accepted interested participants will be notified when the book is available to pick up at the library.

Any questions can be sent to Alfred@stls.org or you can call the library at 607-587-9290.

Classics in Religion
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Late April through May, our Classics in Religion series will host one of our favorite presenters, Leslie Schwartz.

Here is her course description. We hope you can join us for one or more of these sessions!

Talmudic Stories
Jews have been called “The People of the Book.” Our primary book, the Torah (the Five Books of Moses), is a source of inspiration and connection. It can also be intriguingly and frustratingly incomplete.

Talmudic literature is the attempt of generations of rabbis to understand and elucidate Torah. The ancient Jewish sages who composed the Talmud focused on Jewish law. However, Talmud also includes numerous short stories offered as artistic reworkings of the legal questions. A close reading of these stories offers meaningful lessons for life as well as an appreciation for the artistry of these ancient teachers.

The facilitator for these sessions is Leslie Schwartz, Ph. D. Coming from a liberal Jewish tradition, Leslie’s approach to ancient Jewish texts emphasizes her admiration of their ultimate goal— to make our own lives holy through study, questioning, awe, and gratitude.

Come explore a tapestry of rich topics with deeply spiritual threads.  Everyone in invited to attend one or many sessions.  The Classics in Religion program is sponsored by Cobblestone Springs, www.cobblestone-springs.org.
