Young at Heart Book Club for Adults and Teens

Young at Heart Book Club is Storrs' new YA book club for adults and teens! We'll be meeting once a month through the summer, following our summer reading theme "A Universe of Stories." July's selection is The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James.

"Romy Silvers is the only surviving crew-member of a spaceship travelling to a new planet, on a mission to establish a second home for humanity amongst the stars. Alone in space, she is the loneliest girl in the universe until she hears about a new ship which has launched from Earth – with a single passenger on board. A boy called J.

Their only communication with each other is via email – and due to the distance between them, their messages take months to transmit across space. And yet Romy finds herself falling in love.

But what does Romy really know about J? And what do the mysterious messages which have started arriving from Earth really mean?

Sometimes, there’s something worse than being alone . . ." -from the publisher

Pick up a copy at the circulation desk!

An Evening with Mark Mandeville & Raianne Richards

Each summer for the past nine years Mark Mandeville & Raianne Richards have organized the “Massachusetts Walking Tour” where they hike the roads and trails of the Commonwealth, more than 100 miles in less than two weeks, in support of the arts in local communities along the way. Each evening they stop over in yet another Massachusetts town, putting on a free concert there, along with local performers and fellow artists who accompany them on their journey. These annual two-week treks also raise awareness of the trails and greenways in Massachusetts, using music to make important connections.

Young at Heart Book Club for Adults and Teens

Young at Heart Book Club is Storrs' new YA book club for adults and teens! We'll be meeting once a month through the summer, following our summer reading theme "A Universe of Stories." August's selection is Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.

About the book: "This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Sri Lanka’s Road to Peace with Amy Fagin
Join artist and genocide scholar Amy Fagin for an evening of virtual travel through Sri Lanka’s landscape of civil war and post-conflict justice and beauty. In January of 2019, Amy and several scholars in history, law, sociology, and the arts traveled into Sri Lanka’s lesser known regions to learn from the people what their experience of the war and post-war means to them, their neighbors and for the future of the nation.

Sri Lanka is a picture perfect, unspoiled tropical island off the coast of southern India with a population of 22 million and about one-sixth the size of California. In 2018 Sri Lanka was coined the “best travel destination in the world” according to Lonely Planet. However, looking deeper into the history, and socio/economic landscape of the country our travelers came away with a much more complex and powerful perspective on an island once deeply divided by violence and ready to take its place in the sun.

Our evening will feature an exciting visual power point travel journal into areas of the country that were once war zones and are now recovering and in various stages of “post-conflict reconciliation”. Amy’s presentation and conversation will deepen our appreciation and understanding or ourselves and each other worlds far from home and our common denominator of people living peacefully on planet earth. Please come out for an evening of adventure, travel inspiration, global perspectives and community conversation on Sri Lanka’s road to peace.

Read Around Town Book Club

Read Around September 10 meeting

Come enjoy a night out on the town with us by talking books and making new connections with readers from around town. Our Read Around Town Book Club meets monthly at various locations nearby and within Longmeadow.

This month's book is Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. "In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned -- from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren -- an enigmatic artist and single mother -- who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community. When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town -- and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides."--Provided by Publisher.

Copies of this month's book will be available for pick up at Storrs Library on August 1.

Location: TBD

Please note that we ask interested participants to register so that way our host location will have enough chairs available to accommodate our lively group. New members are always welcome!
