Virtual Scary Saturday: The Loch Ness Monster

Virtual Scary Saturday : "The Loch Ness Monster" with John Horrigan.

Presented by The Tewksbury Public Library & co-sponsored by S.O.L.A. (Support Our Library Association).

Join New England Emmy Award-winning folklorist John Horrigan and explore the legend of the Loch Ness Monster, a creature in Scottish folklore that is said to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Popular interest and belief in the creature has varied since it was brought to worldwide attention in 1933. Come and learn whether Nessie is the real deal or a mysterious folklore creature of the deep. Horrigan is the award-winning host and co-creator of “The Folklorist” television series, which offers a captivating look at some of the lesser-known occurrences in history. He is also a prolific professional sports announcer, narrator, historical researcher and lecturer who has performed in over 2,500 venues across North America.

The monster (sometimes referred to as "Nessie") is often described as large, long-necked, and with one or more humps protruding from the water.

Click on the link below to register.  You will receive the program link and reminder emails directly from zoom.us .

Virtual-Digital Preservation for Family Historians

The Scituate Town Lilbrary presents:  Digital Preservation for Family Historians       VIA ZOOM:

Since being passed by Congress in 2001, Family History Month as been observed annually during the month of October. Celebrate your family history by joining us as we welcome archivist Rhonda Chadwick of LenaSalina Legacy Preservation for this third program on Family History.  This lecture is part of a five-part series on Family History and Genealogy. Come to one or come to all of our events in October and November and learn something to help you in your research!

What happens to our digital presence after we pass? How do we preserve it for future generations? How do we save email, Facebook postings, word documents, and pictures? This presentation asks patrons to consider these questions and then begins to provide the answers. Fulfilling the Library of Congress’ initiative to have libraries teach patrons how to create a digital legacy, this class touches upon the best file formats for long term preservation, how to save email, social media pages, and websites. We’ll cover audio and video files and talk about digitizing old VHS tapes, papers, photographs and books. Archivists and the Library of Congress worry that there will be a gap in the historical record of the generation that built the digital superhighway’s infrastructure. This course attempts to close that gap and provide the first generation of the computer age with the necessary tools to create a digital legacy.

This lecture has been generously funded by the Friends of the Scituate Town Library.

Virtual-Organizing Your Family History

The Scituate Town Library presents:  Organizing Your Family History    VIA ZOOM:

Since being passed by Congress in 2001, Family History Month as been observed annually during the month of October. Celebrate your family history by joining us as we welcome archivist Rhonda Chadwick of LenaSalina Legacy Preservation for this fourth program on Family History.  This lecture is part of a five-part series on Family History and Genealogy. Come to one or come to all of our events in October and November and learn something to help you in your research!

Genealogists and family historians quickly get overwhelmed with the amount of family memorabilia they amass. Learning about the best storage enclosures, environmental controls and digital file formats is a great start, but if all that material isn’t stored properly, access can still be unmanageable or impossible. Using the tried and tested principles archivists use to organize and retrieve massive amounts of information patrons will learn how to create a true archive for their family collections.

This lecture has been generously funded by the Friends of the Scituate Town Library.

Register here with the Scituate Town Library to receive the Zoom link:

Virtual- The History of the Blues in America

Guitarist and music historian Joey Leone plays us through  The History of the Blues in America.

In the spirit of Ken Burns' breakout PBS documentary series on American country music, acclaimed guitarist and music historian Joey Leone presents “The History of Blues in America” a one hour program covering the history, influence and social impact of American blues music through songs, stories and historical facts. Joey highlights the influence of blues on virtually all styles of contemporary music over the past 7 decades playing a variety of songs on multiple guitars from his personal collection. In addition to the live music segments, he touches on recurring themes of how the blues transcended racial boundaries, brought people together in times of celebration and times of healing, and how the blues followed the migration from the rural south to the urban north.

Registration is required.  Registrants will be sent the Zoom link 1 day prior to this event.

This virtual program is funded by a grant from the Stoughton Cultural Council, an agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
