Books on Tap - The Friend

Join us to discuss Sigrid Nunez’s “The Friend.”  RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion at our Meet up page Stratford Bookclub & Social Hub. Don't forget to stop by the library to borrow a copy of the book. We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, January 22nd at The Sitting Duck Tavern. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!

We usually meet upstairs at the Sitting Duck. If stairs aren't for you we can arrange to meet on the first floor just let us know.

When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: dogs are prohibited in her apartment building.

While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time. Isolated from the rest of the world, increasingly obsessed with the dog's care, determined to read its mind and fathom its heart, she comes dangerously close to unraveling. But while troubles abound, rich and surprising rewards lie in store for both of them.

Meet the Author: MARIO DELL'OLIO

COMING ABOUT: LIFE IN THE BALANCE by Mario Dell'Olio

A mid-life crisis, a sailing adventure, and a rescue at sea, "Coming About: Life in the Balance" tells a story of survival and inner-strength through a foundational loving relationship. Coming About is a memoir of Mario and Jim who, at 40, quit their jobs and sell their home in San Francisco to follow their dream. They buy a 50-foot sailboat and move to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands where they discover many quirky facets of adjusting to life on the island as well as its many cultural idiosyncrasies. During the maiden voyage from the US mainland to St. Thomas, they encounter treacherous weather conditions and a series of life-threatening events that lead to a rescue at sea and the destruction of their dreams of retirement in a Caribbean paradise. Battling relentlessly crushing waves and shark-infested waters, their lives hang in the balance. Their struggles are vividly recounted as they search for meaning in the near loss of their lives and the shattering of their dreams.

The former Stratford author will discuss his book, read selected sections and autograph copies for sale following the talk.

Free and open to the public.

Meet-the-Author: CHAD BETZ

Autographed copies available for purchase after talk.

~Description of the book from Amazon:
As we get older we tend to give up on our dreams and goals. We don't realize that we are at the five yard line and that if we just keep pushing, we can reach our goals. This easy to read book shows what you need to do to keep going and reach your goals. I used these techniques to keep me on the path to my goals and I want to share them with you. Personal stories and examples demonstrate how I used these techniques to overcome the obstacles I hit.

Talk: Antique Map Collecting 101

Antique Map Collecting 101: Foxing, soiling, and worm holes, oh my!

Guest speaker. Brian Tims, Founder and Officer of CMS.

Are you intrigued by old maps, and perhaps collect them too? Are you confused and tongue-tied by jargon such as "foxing" or "neat line", or simply not sure where to start or how to develop your collection? Come join us as Brian Tims of the Connecticut Map Society enlightens us about collecting (and, most importantly, enjoying) antique and vintage maps of all types. Brian will be your sherpa as he walks you through the land of collecting, including how to define your collection, where to search for and acquire maps, evaluating them, negotiating, and preserving your collection.

This event is free and open to the public.  Bring a friend, or two!
