Teen Movie Afternoon - Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Teens! Join us for a pizza and a movie! This month we're watching Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (PG-13)!

Plot: When four high school kids discover an old video game console, they are drawn into the game's jungle setting, literally becoming the adult avatars they chose. What they quickly discover is that you don't just play Jumanji--you must survive it. To beat the game, they'll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves--or they'll be stuck in the game forever.

The movie stars: Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart.

How to Create Your Unique Elevator Speech

In business or social situations, there are 2 questions that are almost ALWAYS asked: “What do you do?" OR "What business are you in?" The way you respond will go a long way in determining whether or not you have made a connection. For entrepreneurs, your next referral or customer can easily come about by how you answer.

  • How to create your own unique Elevator Speech using the 5 "C" method.
  • Use the "Elevator Speech" as a powerful weapon to combat one of the key "trap questions" used in job interviews, "Tell Me About Yourself..."
  • How proper use of the "Elevator Speech" technique can give you a leg up with an employer as well.

Presenter: Daniel de Percin
Daniel de Percin has been a certified SCORE mentor since 2012. He has been an entrepreneur since 2001. Danny enjoyed a 40+ year career in Broadcasting Sales and Marketing; starting as a trainee with Group W Broadcasting in New York City and rising to management, senior management and ownership positions in terrestrial broadcasting, streaming media and broadcast sales companies in New York, Washington DC, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Author Talk - Shallow Graves with Maureen Boyle

Author Talk: Shallow Graves; The Hunt for the New Bedford Highway Serial Killer

Eleven women went missing over the spring and summer of 1988 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, an old fishing port known as the Whaling City, where Moby Dick, Frederick Douglass, textile mills, and heroin-dealing represent just a few of the many threads in the community’s diverse fabric. In Shallow Graves, investigative reporter Maureen Boyle tells the story of a case that has haunted New England for thirty years.

MAUREEN BOYLE, an award winning journalist, has been a crime reporter in New England for more than 25 years, including at the Standard-Times of New Bedford during this serial murder case. She holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Conn. and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass. She is now director of the Journalism Program at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. This is her first book.

After the Talk Maureen will be available for questions and to sign books. Books can be purchased at the event.

Books on Tap - A River in Darkness

Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

In this memoir translated from the original Japanese, Ishikawa candidly recounts his tumultuous upbringing and the brutal thirty-six years he spent living under a crushing totalitarian regime, as well as the challenges he faced repatriating to Japan after barely escaping North Korea with his life. A River in Darkness is not only a shocking portrait of life inside the country but a testament to the dignity—and indomitable nature—of the human spirit.

RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion @ https://bit.ly/2klBt99. Don't forget to stop by the library to borrow a copy of the book. We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, June 26 at The Sitting Duck Tavern. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!

Cheers!

Concert: Lost Acres String Band

Come and hear the unique sounds of THE LOST ACRES STRING BAND!  Free and open to the public!

Gordon Swift has played in fusion, rock, folk, and country bands, and he led an electric quartet playing original work in New York City for several years. He studied South Indian classical violin in India and holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University. Gordon blends musical influences from around the world into a distinctively American violin/fiddle style.

Paul Howard is a long-time member of the Americana/string band Last Fair Deal, with whom he has recorded four albums. Paul runs Valley Music School in Avon, CT and is a founding faculty member of the National Guitar Workshop with five music instruction books to his credit. He is an eclectic guitarist bringing influences from swing, old-time, bluegrass, and folk/rock music; he’s also an accomplished vocalist.

Jon Swift is a veteran of the New England bluegrass and roots music scene. He was a founding member of the popular bluegrass band Traver Hollow, playing bass and singing with the group for 13 years. He has also sung and played bass or acoustic guitar in several other groups, as well as performing solo. Appearing here on upright bass, Jon lays down a solid foundation for the band.
