Hispanic Heritage Awards Celebration

Join the Teen Department's annual Hispanic Heritage Awards Celebration as we recognize our contest's winners & honorable mentions!

Latinxs have served (& continue to serve) as Civil Rights leaders, politicians, educators, first responders, science pioneers, public servants, & more. With so many inspiring Latinx around the world making a difference both past & present, we invited teens in grades 6th, 7th & 8th to submit essays, poetry & art to celebrate not only their achievements but Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) as well!

The entries we received were all thoughtful, insightful, & truly wonderful. We are excited to give students the opportunity to share their work with everyone. Please stop in with family & friends to cheer on their hard work!

Lifelong Learners: Supernatural Stratford

With nearly 400 years of written history, Stratford has had its fair share of brushes with the supernatural.
From demons being released from the earth during Native American Pow-wows; to mermaids brushing their hair on our beaches; to objects flying through the air of their own accord during Sunday dinner; to pirates invading our shoreline; to premonitions of soon fulfilled deaths; to real life residents hung for witchcraft; to tunnels under town streets providing escaped slaves safe transit on the Underground Railroad: and, more, there’s much of the supernatural to recall from Stratford’s history.
Join us as we explore some of what has made Stratford a haven for ghost hunters and paranormal seekers.

Books Over Coffee: THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW

Monthly book discussion group meets to discuss A.J. Finn's gripping thriller.

Anna Fox lives alone—a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times . . . and spying on her neighbors.

Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble—and its shocking secrets are laid bare.

What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one—and nothing—is what it seems.

Free and open to the public!  Join us!!

Lifelong Learners: Loss of the USS Indianapolis

Bob Begin will talk about the USS Indianapolis, a World War II tragedy in the Pacific. The Indianapolis, which delivered the atomic bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima, was sunk by Japanese torpedoes plunging nearly 900 crewmen into the ocean. Due to an incredible series of blunders by the Navy Dept. the ship was not even noted as being missing for five days.  During that time, the men in the water faced numerous life threatening challenges until rescue finally came.

Books Over Coffee: ELIZABETH STREET

Monthly book discussion group meets to discuss Laurie Fabiano's popular novel.

Based on true events, Elizabeth Street is a multigenerational saga that opens in an Italian village in the 1900's, and crosses the ocean to New York's Lower East Side. At the heart of the novel is Giovanna, whose family is targeted by the notorious Black Hand--the precursor to the Mafia.

Elizabeth Street brings to light a period in history when Italian immigrant neighborhoods lived in fear of Black Hand extortion and violence--a reality that defies the romanticized depiction of the Mafia.

Here, the author reveals the merciless terror of the Black Hand-and the impact their crimes had on her family. Giovanna is based on Fabiano's great-grandmother, and the book's heroes and villains - such as Lieutenant Petrosino, the crusading cop and "Lupo the Wolf," a cold-blooded criminal - are drawn from real life in this thrilling tale. While set in a dynamic historical context, Elizabeth Street is, above all, the dramatic story of the heroine, Giovanna, and how she triumphed over tragedy.

Free and open to the public!  Join us!!
