Book on Tap - Red Card: How the U.S. Blew the Whistle

Join us to discuss Ken Bensinger's “Red Card: How the U.S. Blew the Whistle on the World's Biggest Sports Scandal.”  RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion at our Meet up page Stratford Bookclub & Social Hub. Don't forget to stop by the library to borrow a copy of the book. We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, April 23rd at The Sitting Duck Tavern. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!

We usually meet upstairs at the Sitting Duck. If stairs aren't for you we can arrange to meet on the first floor just let us know.

The definitive, shocking account of the FIFA scandal—the biggest international corruption case of recent years, spearheaded by US investigators, involving dozens of countries, and implicating nearly every aspect of the world’s most popular sport, soccer, including its biggest event, the World Cup.

The FIFA case began small, boosted by an IRS agent’s review of an American soccer official’s tax returns. But that humble investigation eventually led to a huge worldwide corruption scandal that crossed continents and reached the highest levels of the soccer’s world governing body in Switzerland.

In Red Card, Ken Bensinger explores the case, and the personalities behind it, in vivid detail. There’s Chuck Blazer, a high-living soccer dad who ascended to the highest ranks of the sport while creaming millions from its coffers; Jack Warner, a Trinidadian soccer official whose lust for power was matched only by his boundless greed; and the sport’s most powerful man, FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who held on to his position at any cost even as soccer rotted from the inside out.

Great Movies You Missed: THE WIFE

Great Movies You Missed 2019 will highlight five recent, critically acclaimed films that flew under the radar and didn’t get the audiences they deserved. Films are shown in the Library Lovell Room with introduction and commentary by Tom Holehan of the Connecticut Critics Circle.  Adult audiences.

THE WIFE: After nearly forty years of marriage, Joan and Joe Castleman (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) are complements. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of Great Man's Wife. Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe's literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950. THE WIFE interweaves the story of the couple's youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a wife clearly in the shadows.  Close was nominated for her seventh Oscar for her luminous performance.  100 minutes, Rated R.

AARP Driver Safety Class

AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM SET AT LIBRARY

The Stratford Library, in conjunction with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), will offer another session of the “AARP Driver Safety Program”, a classroom driver retraining program designed to help older persons improve their driving skills on Tuesday, May 21 from 1-5 pm.  The one-day class program, one of dozens offered by the agency every year, will be held in the Library’s Board Room.  Developed by the AARP, the program is the first comprehensive driver retraining course geared to the specific needs of older motorists.
The course material covers the effects of aging and medications on driving, basic driving rules, license renewal, local traffic hazards, adverse road conditions, energy saving and accident prevention measures.  No written, physical or driving tests are given.  Research shows that older drivers are involved in more accidents than their middle-aged counterparts when the record is based on actual miles driven.  The physical changes of aging create difficulties for many older drivers when yielding the right-of-way, backing, turning, changing lanes and entering/leaving expressways.
However, research also indicates that older persons can improve their driving abilities through additional training, attention and practice, enabling them to maintain their driving licenses longer while driving safer.  This is the ultimate goal of the “AARP Driver Safety Program”.
Persons 50 years of age or older are eligible to participate in the library program and will receive a certificate of completion at the end of instruction.  The course is limited to 20 participates only and there is a nominal fee of $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members charged by the AARP.  Reservations are required and can be made by calling AARP Representative Michael Klein at 203.929.4851.

Call to Register: (203) 929-4851

Talk: Connecticut’s Transportation Crisis

“Getting There:  Connecticut’s Transportation Crisis”
“Trains, Taxes and Tolls”
Long-time commuter advocate and newspaper commentator JIM CAMERON offers a lively presentation and Q&A on Connecticut’s transportation crisis:
- Our crowded highways falling into a state of disrepair
- Hundreds of bridges considered “deficient”
- Metro-North trains running slower while fares increase
How did our state go from “first to worst” in transportation?  And what does our future hold?
Cameron explores the options in an engaging, thought-provoking workshop with plenty of time to hear your ideas and answer your questions.  Cameron has been called “the transportation guru” having spent over 25 years studying and reporting on the issue.
A former NBC News anchor,  JIM CAMERON is recipient of the George Foster Peabody Award.  A Connecticut resident for over 25 years, he served on the Metro-North Commuter Council and authors a weekly newspaper column, “Getting There” which runs in the six Hearst daily papers every Monday, including The Fairfield Citizen.
An archive of 12 years of his commentaries can be found on his blog, “GettingThereCT”
