Books on Tap - My Year of Rest and Relaxation

Join us to discuss Ottessa Moshfegh's “My Year of Rest and Relaxation.”  RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion at our Meet up page Stratford Bookclub & Social Hub. Don't forget to stop by the library to borrow a copy of the book. We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, March 26th at The Sitting Duck Tavern. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!

We usually meet upstairs at the Sitting Duck. If stairs aren't for you we can arrange to meet on the first floor just let us know.

Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate, works an easy job at a hip art gallery, lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a powerful answer to that question. Through the story of a year spent under the influence of a truly mad combination of drugs designed to heal our heroine from her alienation from this world, Moshfegh shows us how reasonable, even necessary, alienation can be. Both tender and blackly funny, merciless and compassionate, it is a showcase for the gifts of one of our major writers working at the height of her powers.

Hit the Trail on Tuesdays - the movie version!

Hit the Trail on Tuesdays!  Join us for the movie Abilene Town, starring Randolph Scott, along with Rhonda Fleming and Lloyd Bridges.

In this post-Civil War western, lawman Dan Mitchell is put to the test keeping order between cattlemen, homesteaders, and shop owners. In addition to scrappy settlers and rowdy cowboys, there are no-good gunslingers, plus two women vying for his heart - a saucy saloon dancer and an apple-pie mercantile daughter.

(Movie is based on the book "Trail Town" by Ernest Haycox, our April 2 "Hit the Trail" western book discussion book.)
