Books on Tap - A River in Darkness

Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

In this memoir translated from the original Japanese, Ishikawa candidly recounts his tumultuous upbringing and the brutal thirty-six years he spent living under a crushing totalitarian regime, as well as the challenges he faced repatriating to Japan after barely escaping North Korea with his life. A River in Darkness is not only a shocking portrait of life inside the country but a testament to the dignity—and indomitable nature—of the human spirit.

RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion @ https://bit.ly/2klBt99. Don't forget to stop by the library to borrow a copy of the book. We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, June 26 at The Sitting Duck Tavern. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!

Concert: Lost Acres String Band

Come and hear the unique sounds of THE LOST ACRES STRING BAND!  Free and open to the public!

Gordon Swift has played in fusion, rock, folk, and country bands, and he led an electric quartet playing original work in New York City for several years. He studied South Indian classical violin in India and holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University. Gordon blends musical influences from around the world into a distinctively American violin/fiddle style.

Paul Howard is a long-time member of the Americana/string band Last Fair Deal, with whom he has recorded four albums. Paul runs Valley Music School in Avon, CT and is a founding faculty member of the National Guitar Workshop with five music instruction books to his credit. He is an eclectic guitarist bringing influences from swing, old-time, bluegrass, and folk/rock music; he’s also an accomplished vocalist.

Jon Swift is a veteran of the New England bluegrass and roots music scene. He was a founding member of the popular bluegrass band Traver Hollow, playing bass and singing with the group for 13 years. He has also sung and played bass or acoustic guitar in several other groups, as well as performing solo. Appearing here on upright bass, Jon lays down a solid foundation for the band.

12 Steps to a Successful Small Business

Starting and running your business isn’t easy with many obstacles on your path to success. Your odds of building a successful small business can improve by having a solid business plan and being aware of changes in your business’ economic, social and legal environment.

  • understanding your customers and what they really want (not what they say they want)
  • sizing up the competition and developing sound strategies for crushing them
  • being realistic about your strengths and weaknesses and building a management team that can get the job done
  • balancing your company’s “social mission” with the need to make money and finding the money you need to build the business
  • understanding the risks involved in your business and planning for them in advance
  • coping with laws, taxes and government regulations that affect your business

Speaker: Cliff Ennico. Cliff Ennico, a nationally recognized small business legal and tax expert, is best known as the former host of MONEYHUNT on PBS, where entrepreneurs defended their business plans before America's toughest panel of experts.  An attorney and small business consultant based in Fairfield, CT, he has helped launch over 15,000 businesses. He is the author of 16 books, most recently “The Crowdfunding Handbook: How to Raise Capital for Your Business Using Equity Funding Portals”

Register at Fairfield County SCORE
