Books on Tap - 1984

Written in 1948, 1984 was George Orwell’s chilling prophecy about the future. And while 1984 has come and gone, his dystopian vision of a government that will do anything to control the narrative is timelier than ever...

•Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read•

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion at our Meet up page Stratford Bookclub & Social Hub. Don't forget to stop by the library to borrow a copy of the book. We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, September 25th at The Sitting Duck Tavern. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!

Teen Movie Afternoon - Ready Player One

Teen Movie Afternoon - Ready Player One (PG-13, 139 minutes)

In the year 2045, the real world is a harsh place. The only time Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) truly feels alive is when he escapes to the OASIS, an immersive virtual universe where most of humanity spends their days. In the OASIS, you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone-the only limits are your own imagination. The OASIS was created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday, who left his immense fortune and total control of the Oasis to the winner of a three-part contest he designed to find a worthy heir. When Wade conquers the first challenge of the reality-bending treasure hunt, he and his friends are hurled into a fantastical universe of discovery and danger to save the OASIS.

Open to grades 6-12.

Bullet Journaling

Do you wish you were more organized but haven’t found anything that works for you?

https://www.allisonbarrettcarter.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Bullet-Journal-Weekly-Spread-Boxes-960x640.jpg  Bullet Journaling is a creative organizational tool that you design yourself. Combining the functions of a to-do-list, a planner, and a diary, a bullet journal is a simple, efficient, and creative way to manage everything going on in your life with a bit of color and fun. You can keep it simple or make it fancy with artwork, it is up to you!

It’s also a great way to track your progress over time, helps with motivation, and provides tangible proof of what you’ve accomplished!

We will have supplies available to get you started but feel free to bring a journal or notebook and favorite pen.

Ages 10 and up; tween, teens and adults welcome!

DEEJ - Film Screening & Discussion

Join us for a film screening of DEEJ – a documentary about autism and inclusion. Sponsored by SEPTA (Special Education PTA) and the Stratford Library, DEEJ is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between a veteran filmmaker and a nonspeaking autistic. Robert Rooy, the director, and DJ share editorial control as they navigate the challenges of representing autism. With unflinching candor, DEEJ reveals what it takes to make the goals of inclusion and disability rights a reality.

A discussion following the film will be moderated by Chris Abildgaard, director of the Social Learning Center in Cheshire. Chris is a nationally certified school psychologist with a specialization in autism spectrum disorders and social cognitive interventions.

Stratford SEPTA (special education PTA) is for families, educators, and friends who want to support and learn from each other -- as well as celebrate the uniqueness, abilities, and potential of ALL children. SEPTA supporters care about children with individual differences that pose challenges in school and beyond.

Prescribing from the Bookshelf - Connecticut's Role in Bibliotherapy during World War I

"Prescribing from the Bookshelf: Connecticut’s Role in Bibliotherapy and the Library War Service in World War I”

“Bibliotherapy” may seem to be a modern way of describing a benefit of reading, but reading as a therapeutic activity is not a new idea.  When Connecticut’s servicemen went to war, they didn’t go alone.  During World War I, there was the Library War Service, and Connecticut was involved in bringing books to soldiers on the front lines and in military hospitals for education, entertainment, and healing.

Mary Mahoney, Ph.D. Candidate in History at the University of Connecticut, will speak on Tuesday, October 9, from 6:30-7:45 pm at the Stratford Library, 2203 Main Street, Stratford, CT.  Ms. Mahoney will talk about the Library War Service and the use of books as medicine, with a special focus on Connecticut’s part in the effort and the roles of librarians.  She will consider the ways in which popular culture still thinks about our interactions with books as therapeutic.
The program is free and open to the public.  For further information, please call 203.385.4162 or 203.385.4164.
