Sunday Afternoon Talks: Women in the American Revolution

The Stratford Library has announced that “Sunday Afternoon Talks”, its monthly series of informative and entertaining talks featuring prominent local guest speakers, will be held on Sunday, March 4 at 2 pm. This month’s topic is “Women in the American Revolution: Putting the “Her” in Heroics” with guest speaker Eric Chandler. “Sunday Afternoon Talks” is free and open to the public.  The program is a special event held in conjunction with the nationwide observance of “Women’s History Month”.

George Washington, Paul Revere, the Marquis de Lafayette are all names we were taught in school as being heroes of the American War for Independence. Have you ever heard of Molly Pitcher or Anna Maria Lane? Sally St. Claire?  How about Elizabeth Zane? In this revealing presentation you will be introduced to some of the women who risked their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to lift the yoke of British control of the 13 Colonies. Women who are missing from our history books, their stories as soldiers and spies left untold. There are many tales of courage to be revealed about these largely unsung heroines of the American Revolution.

Guest speaker and historian Eric Chandler is retired from a 30+ year career as an underwriter for a leading land title insurance company. He has been involved in American Revolutionary War Living History since 1974. He has portrayed infantry, light infantry, whale-boat raider and mounted and dismounted dragoons. He is currently serving his third term as a member of the Norwalk Historical Commission. His artistic endeavors included writing and recording a comedy CD, and decades as a musician playing the sax in area Rock & Roll and Blues bands. To his credit, or shame, he had his likeness used in an issue of MAD Magazine. Eric is enjoying retirement with his wife, Catherine, taking classes, giving lectures on historical topics and continuing to live history.

For his “Sunday Afternoon Talks” program, Chandler will present a PowerPoint talk with Q&A to follow.  It will be held in the Stratford Library’s Lovell Room beginning at 2 pm on Sunday, March 4.  For further information, call the Library’s Public Relations & Programming Office at: 203.385.4162 or visit: www.stratfordlibrary.org.

Film: HEROIN(E)

~The Stratford Library will be hosting a free screening of the Netflix Original Documentary “Heroin(e)”, a film by Peabody Award-winning director Elaine McMillion Sheldon, on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 from 7 pm – 9 pm. Following the film, there will be a Q&A panel of first responders to share their first-hand experience of dealing with the Opioid Crisis in Stratford, including those from Stratford EMS, Fire Department, Police Department, Public Safety and a staff member from the Bridgeport Hospital Emergency Room. The event will be hosted by AmeriCorps Opioid Prevention Corps member, Emily Barksdale, and sponsored by Stratford Community Services, Stratford Partnership for Youth and Families and the Stratford Health Department.

“Heroin(e)” provides a different perspective than other films following the American Opioid Epidemic. Instead of focusing on those who are suffering from Opioid addiction, this film follows the day to day ordeals of three women in a small Appalachian town, who dedicate their lives to helping heal their community from addition. In Huntington, West Virginia, where the Opioid Overdose rate is more that 10 times the national average, Fire Chief Jan Rader revives multiple people from Opioid overdoses a day, Judge Patricia Keller presides over the town’s Drug Court to providing treatment in the form of orders, and Necia Freeman, of the Brown Bag Ministry, drives around the dark streets of town, providing meals and other essentials to woman prostituting themselves to support their addictions. The inspiring work of these three women is beautifully showcased through McMillion Sheldon’s lens, and shows that where there is addiction, despair and suffering, there is also love, understanding and hope.

Books on Tap - The Hate U Give

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion of Angie Thomas's “The Hate U Give.”@ goo.gl/ZpFxuu. Don't forget to stop by the library to borrow a copy of the book. We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, March 20th at The Sitting Duck Tavern. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!

Korean Film & Food

RESERVATIONS WILL BE TAKEN BEGINNING MARCH 1, 2018

The Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project (“KSCPP”)  will present a free program which includes a showing of historical documentary followed by the renactment of a traditional Korean wedding ceremony and the serving of Korean food.

The KSCPP has offered numerous free presentations on Korean history and culture throughout the country (over 1,500 times in the U.S. alone).

One of the documentaries will focus on King Sejong the Great, a truly enlightened monarch from the 15th century Korea.  His motto was, “The duty of a king is to love his people. That is all.”  With this belief, King Sejong initiated numerous cultural achievements and scientific inventions to improve the welfare of his people. To spread the benefits of such accomplishments, he enhanced the moveable metal type printing technology (originally invented in Korea 200 years before Gutenberg in Europe) and printed large runs of books.  His most important contribution was the invention of the Korean Alphabet Hangeul, which he created to eradicate the illiteracy in the country.

A full Korean meal will follow the film showing.

The program is free and open to the public but seating will be limited and RESERVATIONS are required by calling: 203.385.4162.  Limited to 50 patrons.
