Books on Tap - Norwich: One Tiny Vermont Town's Secret to Happiness and Excellence

The extraordinary story of the small Vermont town that has likely produced more Olympians per capita than any other place in the country—and whose citizens provide a model for achieving excellence while leading a well-rounded life.

Norwich, a charming Vermont town of roughly three thousand residents, has sent an athlete to almost every Winter Olympics for the past thirty years—and three times that athlete has returned with a medal.

RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion at our Meet up page Stratford Bookclub & Social Hub. Don't forget to stop by the library to borrow a copy of the book. We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, August 21 at The Sitting Duck Tavern. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!

Mother Daughter Book Club

For girls ages 8-12 and their mothers or other special woman in their life!

Join the Mother Daughter Book Club this month as we read Pie by Sarah Weeks.

When Alice's Aunt Polly, the Pie Queen of Ipswitch, passes away, she takes with her the secret to her world-famous pie-crust recipe. Or does she? In her will, Polly leaves the recipe to her extraordinarily fat, remarkably disagreeable cat, Lardo . . . and then leaves Lardo in the care of Alice  Suddenly, the whole town is wondering how you leave a recipe to a cat. Everyone wants to be the next big pie-contest winner, and it's making them pie-crazy. It's up to Alice and her friend Charlie to put the pieces together and discover the not-so-secret recipe for happiness: Friendship. Family. And the pleasure of doing something for the right reason.

Come to discuss the book, enjoy an activity and a snack!

Copies are available at the check out desk.

Prescribing from the Bookshelf - Connecticut's Role in Bibliotherapy during World War I

"Prescribing from the Bookshelf: Connecticut’s Role in Bibliotherapy and the Library War Service in World War I”

“Bibliotherapy” may seem to be a modern way of describing a benefit of reading, but reading as a therapeutic activity is not a new idea.  When Connecticut’s servicemen went to war, they didn’t go alone.  During World War I, there was the Library War Service, and Connecticut was involved in bringing books to soldiers on the front lines and in military hospitals for education, entertainment, and healing.
Mary Mahoney, Ph.D. Candidate in History at the University of Connecticut, will speak on Tuesday, October 9, from 6:30-7:45 pm at the Stratford Library, 2203 Main Street, Stratford, CT.  Ms. Mahoney will talk about the Library War Service and the use of books as medicine, with a special focus on Connecticut’s part in the effort and the roles of librarians.  She will consider the ways in which popular culture still thinks about our interactions with books as therapeutic.
The program is free and open to the public.  For further information, please call 203.385.4162 or 203.385.4164.
