Understanding your Paranormal Senses
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

This presentation is based upon paranormal author Sydney Sherman's very popular workshops in which she discusses the many ways in which anyone can learn to use their senses IE: smelling, hearing, seeing and feeling to connect to their loved ones. Ms. Sherman starts with a very detailed explanation of how each sense works, how it can be tricked, how to use each effectively and how to encourage a spiritual interaction with your love one. Ms. Sherman provides step by step demonstrations for each sense and interacts with the audience to allow them the opportunity to feel how these techniques work under the guidance of Ms. Sherman.

Daytime Discussions
10:30 AM - 11:45 AM

Join us for our newest Daytime Discussion on Monday, October 28 at 10:30am. Socialize and grab a cup of tea, coffee or hot cocoa before sitting down and reflecting on Gabrielle Zevin's "Storied Life of A.J.Fikry".

As surprising as it is moving, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry is an unforgettable tale of transformation and second chances, an irresistible affirmation of why we read, and why we love.

We are not quite novels.

We are not quite short stories.

In the end, we are collected works.

A. J. Fikry's life is not at all what he expected it to be. His wife has died; his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history; and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. Slowly but surely, he is isolating himself from all the people of Alice Island—from Chief Lambiase, the well-intentioned police officer who's always felt kindly toward him; from Ismay, his sister-in-law, who is hell-bent on saving A.J. from his dreary self; from Amelia, the lovely and idealistic (if eccentric) Knightley Press sales rep who persists in taking the ferry to Alice Island, refusing to be deterred by A.J.'s bad attitude. Even the books in his store have stopped holding pleasure for him. These days, he can only see them as a sign of a world that is changing too rapidly.

And then a mysterious package appears at the bookstore. It's a small package, though large in weight—an unexpected arrival that gives A.J. the opportunity to make his life over, the ability to see everything anew. It doesn't take long for the locals to notice the change overcoming A.J., for the determined sales rep Amelia to see her curmudgeonly client in a new light, for the wisdom of all those books to become again the lifeblood of A.J.'s world. Or for everything to twist again into a version of his life that he didn't see coming.

Pick up your copy at the Circulation Desk after September 23, 2019.  Audiobook and Large Print available.

Book Club Buddies
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Join our NEW Book Club for Kids.  This month we will be reading Big Foot and Little Foot (see description below). We will discuss the book, have some snacks, and do an activity! Request your copy of the book at the circulation desk.

Hugo is a young Sasquatch who longs for adventure. Boone is young boy who longs to see a Sasquatch. When their worlds collide, they become the unlikeliest pair of best friends.

At the Academy for Curious Squidges, Hugo learns all manner of Sneaking—after all, the most important part of being a Sasquatch is staying hidden from humans. But Hugo dreams of roaming free in the Big Wide World rather than staying cooped up in caves. When he has an unexpected run-in with a young human boy, Hugo seizes the opportunity for a grand adventure. Soon, the two team up to search high and low for mythical beasts, like Ogopogos and Snoot-Nosed Gints. Through discovering these new creatures, together, Big Foot and Little Foot explore the ins and outs of each other’s very different worlds but learn that, deep down, maybe they’re not so different after all.

Daytime Discussions
10:30 AM - 11:45 AM

Join us for our newest Daytime Discussion on Monday, November 25 at 10:30am. Socialize and grab a cup of tea, coffee or hot cocoa before sitting down and discussing Michelle McNamara’s “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark”, a masterful true crime account of the Golden State Killer from a gifted journalist.

"You’ll be silent forever, and I’ll be gone in the dark."

For more than ten years, a mysterious and violent predator committed fifty sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated ten sadistic murders.  Then he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area.

Three decades later, Michelle McNamara, a true crime journalist who created the popular website TrueCrimeDiary.com, was determined to find the violent psychopath she called "the Golden State Killer." Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was.  At the time of the crimes, the Golden State Killer was between the ages of eighteen and thirty, Caucasian, and athletic—capable of vaulting tall fences. He always wore a mask.  After choosing a victim—he favored suburban couples—he often entered their home when no one was there, studying family pictures, mastering the layout. He attacked while they slept, using a flashlight to awaken and blind them. Though they could not recognize him, his victims recalled his voice: a guttural whisper through clenched teeth, abrupt and threatening.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark—the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death—offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind.  It is also a portrait of a woman’s obsession and her unflagging pursuit of the truth.  Pick up your copy at the Circulation Desk after October 28, 2019. Large print and audiobooks available.
