Daytime Discussions
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Join us for a *new* Daytime Discussion on Monday, January 28 at 10:30am. Socialize and grab a cup of tea, coffee or hot cocoa before sitting down and reflecting on Fredrik Backman's "A Man Called Ove".

Book Introduction: Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.

Pick up your copy at the Circulation Desk after December 30, 2019. Large print format available.

The Art of Racing in the Rain: A Novel by Garth Stein

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.
Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through.
A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life ... as only a dog could tell it.    The Art of Racing in the Rain: A Novel by Garth Stein

Daytime Discussions
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Join us for a *new* Daytime Discussion on Monday, February 25 at 10:30am. Socialize and grab a cup of tea, coffee or hot cocoa before sitting down and reflecting on Kent Haruf's "Plainsong"c.

Book Introduction: In the small town of Holt, Colorado, a high school teacher is confronted with raising his two boys alone after their mother retreats first to the bedroom, then altogether. A teenage girl—her father long since disappeared, her mother unwilling to have her in the house—is pregnant, alone herself, with nowhere to go. And out in the country, two brothers, elderly bachelors, work the family homestead, the only world they've ever known. From these unsettled lives emerges a vision of life, and of the town and landscape that bind them together—their fates somehow overcoming the powerful circumstances of place and station, their confusion, curiosity, dignity and humor intact and resonant.

Pick up your copy at the Circulation Desk after January 28. Large print and audiobook formats available.

A wrinkle in time Madeline L’Engle

Over fifty years ago, Madeleine L'Engle introduced the world to A Wrinkle in Time and the wonderful and unforgettable characters Meg and Charles Wallace Murry, and their friend Calvin O'Keefe. Now all their adventures are together in one volume. The Time Quintet consists of A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, and An Acceptable Time.

A Wrinkle in Time—This Newberry Award winner is one of the most significant novels of our time. This fabulous, ground-breaking science-fiction and fantasy story is the first of five in the Time Quintet series about the Murry family.

A Wind in the Door—When Charles Wallace falls ill, Meg, Calvin, and their teacher, Mr. Jenkins, must travel inside C.W. to make him well, and save the universe from the evil Echthros.

A Swiftly Tilting Planet—The Murry and O'Keefe Families enlist the help of the unicorn, Gaudior, to save the world from imminent nuclear war.

Many Waters—Meg Murry, now in college, time travels with her twin brothers, Sandy and Dennys, to a desert oasis that is embroiled in war.

An Acceptable Time—While spending time with her grandparents, Alex and Kate Murry, Polly O'Keefe wanders into a time 3,000 years before her own.

Books available at the circulation desk.

Linda Campanella,

Linda Campanella describes herself as an accidental author. A management consultant and mother of three grown sons, Campanella lives in West Hartford with her husband and high school sweetheart, Joe, and their mini-goldendoodle, Stella.

"When All That's Left of Me is Love" is a moving account of the author's last year with her mother. Written as a tribute to the mother she says epitomized courage and grace, Campanella's story is a celebration of the mother-daughter relationship, a touching love story and so much more. It provides life-affirming inspirations that will help anyone facing loss or death as well as those simply needing a reminder to appreciate the gift of live.

Join us for this author talk and book signing. Copies of her book, "When All That's Left of Me is Love," will be available for purchase at the event. Registration requested by calling 860-583-4467. Light refreshments will be served.
