AUTHOR VISIT: 'Spy Schools' with Daniel Golden

Pulitzer Prize winner Daniel Golden, author of "Spy Schools: How The CIA, FBI and Foreign Intelligence Secretly Exploit America's Universities," will reveal how academia has become a major target of foreign and domestic espionage, and why that's such troubling news for our nation's security and democratic values.

"Globalization - the influx of foreign students and professors and the outflow of Americans for study, teaching and conferences abroad - has transformed U.S. higher education into a front line for international spying," says Golden. "In labs, classrooms, and auditoriums, intelligence services from countries like China, Russia, and Cuba seek insights into U.S. policy, recruits for clandestine operations, and access to sensitive military and civilian research. The FBI and CIA reciprocate, tapping international students and faculty as informants, while universities often ignore or condone this interference." Learn more about Golden and his book HERE.

Doors to open by 6:45pm.  Q&A and book signing to follow the event for those interested. Limited to 50 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. This program is a part of the library's '100 Authors In 2018' initative to host 100 local authors in 1 year.

AUTHOR VISIT: 'Boston's South End' with Lauren Prescott

Lauren Prescott, author of "Boston's South End," will recount the history of one of the city's most famous neighborhoods, from its inception as a wealthy residential district to a vibrant immigrant community in the early 20th century.  History lovers and Boston transplants living in the Tewksbury and the Merrimack Valley are sure to enjoy this multimedia presentation.

"The South End, steeped in history, has certainly come a long way since its inception," says Prescott, Executive Director of the South End Historical Society. "Bordered by Back Bay, Roxbury, and Chinatown, the South End was once a tidal marsh with a narrow strip of land connecting the Shawmut Peninsula (today's Downtown Boston) to the neighboring mainland town of Roxbury. Known as the 'Boston Neck,' that strip of land was the foundation upon which the neighborhood was created in the 19th century." Learn more about Prescott and her book HERE.

Doors to open by 6:45pm.  Q&A and book signing to follow the event for those interested. Limited to 50 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. This program is a part of the library's '100 Authors In 2018' initative to host 100 local authors in 1 year.

Actress Anne Barrett will perform her one-woman show, "Belva Lockwood for President."

About Belva: Meet the first woman to be admitted to the Supreme Court Bar! Belva Lockwood will delight with a lively campaign speech detailing her fight to be admitted to the highest echelons of the American judiciary system, her early struggles as a woman trying to break free of social conventions, and her 1884 bid for the presidency. AUTHOR VISIT: 'You've Got 8 Seconds' with Paul Hellman
Paul Hellman, author of "You've Got 8 Seconds: Communication Secrets For A Distracted World," will introduce strategies that will get you heard, get you remembered and get you results, both at work and in life.

"Every day at work, people do three things: talk, listen and pretend to listen. That's not surprising -- the average attention span has dropped to just 8 seconds," says Hellman, a high-stakes communications expert and former contributing editor to "Management Review." "To get heard, you need to focus on your message, be slightly different, and deliver with finesse. Come discover techniques to improve your FOCUS (design a strong message and hit it in seconds), VARIETY (make routine information come alive), and PRESENCE (convey confidence and command attention)." Learn more about Hellman and his book HERE.

Doors to open by 6:45pm.  Q&A and book signing to follow the event for those interested. Limited to 50 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. This program is a part of the library's '100 Authors In 2018' initative to host 100 local authors in 1 year.
