Actor Stephen Collins will perform his one-man show, "Unlaunch'd Voices: An Evening with Walt Whitman."
About The Show: The show opens with the elderly Whitman on the evening of his seventieth birthday. The audience is a visitor in his room as he prepares for his birthday celebration. Whitman begins to reminisce and to question his success as a man and a poet. He remembers a mystical experience he had in his thirty-seventh year that inspired him to write poetry. During the telling, Whitman transforms into his young vibrant self and we begin to trace back along with him the experiences that led to the creation of Leaves Of Grass, his lifetime work. The first part of the performance explores Whitman's preoccupation with the self and his resolve to write with "free and brave thought..." In the second part of the performance, Whitman's life is changed forever by the occurrence of the Civil War. It is here that he finds "... the most important work of my life..." nursing the wounded soldiers in the hospitals. Through poetry and readings of actual letters, experience Whitman's movement from selfishness and selflessness and his growth into a mature artist who is at peace about "himself, God and death."
About Stephen: Stephen Collins grew up in Cambridge, and received a BA in Literature from UMass Boston. After twenty plus years in a sales career, he is back doing what he truly loves - performing and teaching. Collins teaches seminars on Whitman, Hardy, Shakespeare, Frost, and Contemporary Poetry around the country. He also works as a professionally licensed tour guide doing narrated historical tours of Boston. Collins now has eight one-man shows and six courses where his teaching style has been described as a hybrid between lecture and performance.
This event will be held in the Fairgrieve Wing. Q&A to follow the performance. Limited to 75 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. This program is a part of the library's spring living history series.

Author Joseph Rosenbloom will discuss his new book, "Redemption: Martin Luther King Jr.'s Last 131 Hours."
About The Book: Redemption is an intimate look at the last thirty-one hours and twenty-eight minutes of King's life. King was exhausted from a brutal speaking schedule. He was being denounced in the press and by political leaders as an agent of violence. He was facing dissent even within the civil rights movement and among his own staff at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In Memphis, a federal court injunction was barring him from marching. As threats against King mounted, he feared an imminent, violent death. The risks were enormous, the pressure intense.
Redemption draws on dozens of interviews by the author with people who were immersed in the Memphis events, features recently released documents from Atlanta archives, and includes compelling photos. The fresh material reveals untold facets of the story including a never-before-reported lapse by the Memphis Police Department to provide security for King. It unveils financial and logistical dilemmas and recounts the emotional and marital pressures that were bedeviling King. Also revealed is what his assassin, James Earl Ray, was doing in Memphis during the same time and how a series of extraordinary breaks enabled Ray to construct a sniper's nest and shoot King.
About The Author: Joseph Rosenbloom is an award-winning journalist who has been a staff reporter for the Boston Globe, an investigative reporter for Frontline, and a senior editor for Inc. magazine. He has written for the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, American Prospect, among other publication, and lives in Newton, Massachusetts.
Doors to open by 6:45pm. Q&A and book signing to follow the event for those interested. Limited to 50 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. This program is a part of the library's '100 Authors In 2018' initiative to host 100 local authors in 1 year.

Author Ray Anthony Shepard will discuss his new book, "Now or Never: Fifty-Fourth Massachusetts Infantry's War to End Slavery."
About The Book: Now or Never is the riveting dual biography of two little-known but extraordinary men in Civil War history -- George E. Stephens and James Henry Gooding. These Union soldiers not only served in the Massachusetts 54th Infantry, the well-known black regiment, but were also war correspondents who published eyewitness reports of the battlefields. Their dispatches told the truth of their lives at camp, their intense training, and the dangers and tragedies on the battlefield. Like the other thousands of black soldiers in the regiment, they not only fought against the Confederacy and the inhumanity of slavery, but also against injustice in their own army. The regiment’s protest against unfair pay resulted in America’s first major civil rights victory -- equal pay for African American soldiers.
About The Author: Ray Anthony Shepard is the grandson of a slave and was the first African American editor-in-chief of a major educational publishing house. He holds an MAT from Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he received a Martin Luther King Jr. Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. He has taught at Phillips Andover Academy and Brandeis University. He lives in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

Author Michael Maddigan will discuss his new book, "Massachusetts Correctional Institution-Bridgewater: A Troubled Past."
About The Book: Once known as MCI-Bridgewater and earlier as the Massachusetts State Farm, the Bridgewater Correctional Complex opened in 1854. It was one of several progressive charitable institutions the state created as a model for communities around the world. However, deteriorating conditions for its residents shadowed Bridgewater's evolution from an almshouse to a prison and hospital for the criminally insane. A century later, it was among the nation's most notorious asylums. Historian Michael J. Maddigan offers a riveting examination of this infamous history, including the inspiration for state-sponsored welfare, moral and legal challenges and the experiences of the people who lived and worked there.
About The Author: Historian Michael J. Maddigan is the author of twelve previous books. His work is carried in the Middleboro Gazette, for which he has written more than five hundred historical columns; is featured on the blog Recollecting Nemasket; and has appeared in numerous publications. Maddigan is the founder of Recollecting Nemasket, a small publishing press devoted to the history of southeastern Massachusetts. A graduate of Stonehill College, he holds a Master of Arts degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. Maddigan currently serves as the chairman of the Middleborough Historical Commission.
Doors to open by 1:45pm. Q&A and book signing to follow the event for those interested. Limited to 50 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. This program is a part of the library's '100 Authors In 2018' initiative to host 100 local authors in 1 year.

Anna Popp, Advisor with the Massachusetts Library System, will introduce the topic of 'Whole Library Programming' to Northeast Program Planners Group members and any other interested librarians and library staff members.
You can combine all the library has to offer with the various communication methods of your library to build simple, but rich, promotion for your programs. We’ll explore in-library merchandising techniques as well as social media approaches to program promotion that involve the whole library, with the goal of garnering broad exposure. We will workshop some ideas and attendees will leave with practical understanding of how to build unique promotional strategies using new or varied tactics.
We’ll cover some marketing info, and delve into visual merchandising tactics. There’s a bit of workshopping – hands on exercises, to get participants thinking of ways to incorporate into promotion materials and services that might otherwise not be considered.

Authors Ryan Conary, David Moffat and Everett Philbrook will discuss their new book, "The House Of Seven Gables: Images Of America."
About The Book: The House of the Seven Gables is an American icon. It is one of the nation's oldest homes and one of its first historic house museums. Built in 1668, it is a unique and well-restored first period house displaying many preserved 17th- and 18th-century architectural features. Three generations of the seafaring Turner family lived in the home before the American Revolution. In the 19th century, the author Nathaniel Hawthorne was hosted in the house by his cousin, and the setting encouraged his literary genius. After this famous association, the house attracted tourists even before it opened to the public when the artistic Upton family called the mansion home. In 1910, Caroline Emmerton, an enterprising philanthropist, opened the home to raise money to help local immigrants. She restored the structure and brought other historic houses from Salem to the property.
About The Authors: Staff members Ryan Conary, David Moffat, and Everett Philbrook have searched through the archives of the House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association and other local institutions to curate a selection of images. These images show the detailed architectural history of the structures, and the life within and around their walls, over the course of the century from 1860 to 1960.
Doors to open by 6:45pm. Q&A and book signing to follow the event for those interested. Limited to 50 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. This program is a part of the library's '100 Authors In 2018' initiative to host 100 local authors in 1 year.
