TEWKSBURY JOB SEEKERS: How To Create A Winning Elevator Speech with Anne Crawford

Review the three essential steps to help form a precise "Elevator Speech." Discover your own personal strengths. Compile an effective, compelling 30-second introduction that doesn't sound like a machine talking, but - instead - reflects who you actually, while "hooking" folks in the process. Bring some paper, pen, and an open mind. Led by Anne Crawford, a certified life coach specializing in career transitions.

The Tewksbury Job Seekers Network meets every Monday at 2pm in the library's second-floor Trustees Room. The group is open to anyone who is unemployed, underemployed, or looking to change careers. Attendees do NOT need to be residents of Tewksbury. Limited to 15 seats. There will be time for networking after each presentation. Dress is business casual. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Evening Book Group Meeting: The Distant Hours by Kate Morton (UPDATED)

The library's Evening Book Group is reading The Distant Hours by Kate Morton this month. (The previous selection for September, Little Big Lies by Liane Moriarty, has been postponed due to lack of title availability.) Books and discussion guides will be available at the Front Desk by the end of August. New readers are always welcome!

About the Book: As a wartime evacuee from London at the time of the Blitz, 13-year-old Meredith Baker is in awe both of the ancient Milderhurst castle where she is staying and of its inhabitants, the Blythes—sweet and maternal Saffy; her shrewd twin, Percy; and the wild and talented Juniper, who becomes Meredith's best friend. Fifty years later, a lost letter arrives to remind Meredith of her time at Milderhurst, even though she has long tried to bury the memory. It falls to her daughter, Edie, to begin to untangle her mother's secrets. The trail leads back to Milderhurst and the Blythes and into an even thicker nest of hidden mysteries that Edie is determined to uncover.

FALL PARANORMAL SERIES: An Evening with Steve Parsons, U.K.'s Leading Paranormal Investigator

The United Kingdom's leading paranormal investigator Steve Parsons will discuss one of the world's most haunted houses -- Borley Rectory.

About The Presentation: Long before The Conjuring, there was Borley Rectory. Successive Rectors and their families and friends experienced the haunting first hand. Servants after they encountered the ghosts would refuse to work there and villagers shunned the place by night. In 1927, it was decided that something must be done and the incumbent called upon the services of Harry Price, the world's leading ghost hunter, who had established National Laboratory for Psychial Research. Thus began one of the most thorough and detailed investigations of a haunted house that has ever been undertaken -- a 20-year search for answers, including a year-long rental of the property during which a team of investigators lived there day and night, detailing the events and studying the phenomena.  Price was no ordinary ghost hunter and Borley Rectory was no ordinary haunted house.

About The Speaker: The Wall Street Journal called Steve Parsons “The Gold Standard in Ghost Hunting." Parsons has spent more than 30 years as a full-time investigator of Ghosts. Poltergeists, Haunted Houses and related phenomena.  He is currently acknowledged by his peers and leading academic parapsychologists to be one the best investigators in the UK. Author of two highly regarded books - Ghostology, The Art of the Ghost Hunter & Paracoustics, Sound and the Paranormal, his prolific work has featured or has been cited in many books, journals, magazines and newspapers. Parsons has starred in and contributed to many TV documentaries, including appearances on The Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and the BBC. He has worked as an investigator and presenter on hit TV ghost hunting shows, including "Most Haunted" & "I’m Famous and Frightened." Parsons also co-hosts the popular "Ghost Chronicles International" radio show and podcast.

Parsons is a co-founder of Para.Science, which in 2018 celebrates 25 years of independent research and investigation. Throughout that time, histeam has worked alongside many leading parapsychologists and university parapsychology departments. They have conducted hundreds of investigations, from simple short visits to others requiring tens of thousands of hours. Parsons is also an Investigation Committee Member of the prestigious Society for Psychical Research (founded in 1882) and is an Advisor to the World’s oldest ghost group The Ghost Club (founded in 1862). He is often called upon to act as an independent advisor for other investigators and provides training, support and analysis of evidence.

Q&A after the presentation. Limited to 75 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

FALL AUTHOR SERIES: Dick Lehr ('Trell')

Author Dick Lehr will discuss his new book, Trell.

About The Book: On a hot summer night in the late 1980s, in the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury, a twelve-year-old African-American girl was sitting on a mailbox talking with her friends when she became the innocent victim of gang-related gunfire. Amid public outcry, an immediate manhunt was on to catch the murderer, and a young African-American man was quickly apprehended, charged, and — wrongly — convicted of the crime. Dick Lehr, a former reporter for the Boston Globe’s famous Spotlight Team who investigated this case for the newspaper, now turns the story into Trell, a page-turning novel about the daughter of an imprisoned man who persuades a reporter and a lawyer to help her prove her father’s innocence. What pieces of evidence might have been overlooked? Can they manage to get to the truth before a dangerous character from the neighborhood gets to them?

About The Author: Dick Lehr is the co-author, with Gerard O'Neill, of Black Mass, a New York Times bestseller about Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger, which was made into a film starring Johnny Depp. His most recent book, The Birth of a Movement, was adapted into a PBS documentary that aired on the network's primetime show, "Independent Lens," in February 2017. Lehr is a former reporter for the Boston Globe and now teaches journalism at Boston University.

Q&A and book selling and signing after the event for those interested. Limited to 75 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Please note this event was, at one time, promoted for November 18, but was moved up to October 7. All registrants were notified of the change.

Adult Non-Fiction Book Group: Marmee & Louisa by Eve LaPlante

The library's Non-Fiction Book Group is reading Marmee & Louisa: The Untold Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Mother by Eve LaPalnte this month.  Books will be available at the second-floor Reference Desk by mid-September. New readers are always welcome!

About the Book: Marmee & Louisa, hailed by NPR as one of the best books of 2012, paints an exquisitely moving and utterly convincing portrait of Louisa May Alcott and her mother, the real “Marmee.” Award-winning biographer Eve LaPlante mines the Alcotts’ intimate diaries and other private papers, some recently discovered in a family attic and others thought to have been destroyed, to revive this remarkable daughter and mother. Abigail May Alcott—long dismissed as a quiet, self-effacing background figure—comes to life as a gifted writer and thinker. A politically active feminist firebrand, she fought for universal civil rights, an end to slavery, and women’s suffrage. This gorgeously written story of two extraordinary women is guaranteed to transform our view and deepen our understanding of one of America’s most beloved authors.

FALL PARANORMAL SERIES: Inside Monsterland, Massachusetts with Ronny Le Blanc

Author Ronny Le Blanc will discuss his new book, Monsterland: Encounters with UFOs, Bigfoot, and Orange Orbs.

About The Book: There is an area known to the locals of Leominster, Massachusetts as MONSTERLAND. There are sightings of UFOS, Bigfoot and Orange Orbs. They have been coming and going for years. But where are they coming from? Why are they here? It seems that the state of Massachusetts has had a long history of sightings and encounters with these mysterious entities and they are occurring in the present day. Could all of these events somehow be connected? What is so special about Leominster that they have plagued the area for so long? Author and Researcher Ronny Le Blanc, of Leominster, thinks that he might have the answers to some of these questions. But the answers received lead to a whole new understanding of the unknown.... Welcome to MONSTERLAND!

About The Author: Ronny Le Blanc is a student of the esoteric, metaphysical and alternative history. He has spent a majority of his life devouring books and content surrounding the subject matter of UFOs, Bigfoot and the paranormal. Once his personal life seemed to become intertwined with his research, he was driven to write a book about his experiences and the hidden history of Monsterland. He currently works in the Advertising industry in Boston, Massachusetts.

Q&A and book selling and signing after the event for those interested. Limited to 75 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

FALL AUTHOR SERIES: Terry Knopf ('The Golden Age Of Boston Television')

Author Terry Knopf will discuss her new book, The Golden Age of Boston Television.

About The Book: Do the names “Chet and Natalie,” “Liz, Jack and Lobel” and TV showman Tom Ellis ring a bell?  All were part of a historic era in Boston's Golden Age of television news and programming. In this lively insider account, Terry Ann Knopf traces the Golden Age's origins in the 1970s through its decline in the early 1990s. She also explores pivotal events such as TV coverage of the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster and Governor Mike Dukakis' 1988 run for president. Knopf delves into how Boston TV stations largely failed during the Boston’s clerical sex abuse scandal and how the persistence of racism and sexism manifested itself within Boston’s TV stations. Come take an intimate look at how Boston’s television stations refracted the city’s culture in unique ways, while at the same time setting national standards for television creativity and excellence.

About The Author: Terry Ann Knopf has worked as a TV critic for the Miami Herald and the Patriot Ledger, and was also a Boston Globe correspondent specializing in television. Her freelance pieces have appeared in Columbia Journalism Review, the New York Times, and Boston Magazine, and in numerous scholarly journals. A three-time winner for Best TV Critic in Boston Magazine’s annual Best-of-Boston awards, she was also voted Best Columnist by the New England Women’s Press Association. She has been a longtime lecturer in Boston University’s journalism department.

Q&A and book selling and signing after the event for those interested. Limited to 75 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

FALL PARANORMAL SERIES: The Legend of a New England Ghost Ship with Jill Farinelli

Author Jill Farinelli will discuss her new book, The Palatine Wreck: The Legend of the New England Ghost Ship.

About The Book: Two days after Christmas in 1738, a British merchant ship traveling from Rotterdam to Philadelphia grounded in a blizzard on the northern tip of Block Island, twelve miles off the Rhode Island coast. The ship carried emigrants from the Palatinate and its neighboring territories in what is now southwest Germany. The 105 passengers and crew on board—sick, frozen, and starving—were all that remained of the 340 men, women, and children who had left their homeland the previous spring. They now found themselves castaways, on the verge of death, and at the mercy of a community of strangers whose language they did not speak.

Shortly after the wreck, rumors began to circulate that the passengers had been mistreated by the ship’s crew and by some of the islanders. The stories persisted, transforming over time as stories do and, in less than a hundred years, two terrifying versions of the event had emerged. Some claimed the ship was set ablaze to hide evidence of crimes, their stories fueled by reports of a fiery ghost ship first seen drifting in Block Island Sound on the one-year anniversary of the wreck. These tales became known as the legend of the Palatine, the name given to the ship in later years, when its original name had been long forgotten. The flaming apparition was nicknamed the Palatine Light.

The eerie phenomenon has been witnessed by hundreds of people over the centuries, and numerous scientific theories have been offered as to its origin. Its continued reappearances, along with the attention of some of nineteenth-century America’s most notable writers—among them Richard Henry Dana Sr., John Greenleaf Whittier, Edward Everett Hale, and Thomas Wentworth Higginson—has helped keep the legend alive. This despite evidence that the vessel, whose actual name was the Princess Augusta, was never abandoned, lured ashore, or destroyed by fire. So how did the rumors begin? What really happened to the Princess Augusta and the passengers she carried on her final, fatal voyage? Through years of painstaking research, Jill Farinelli reconstructs the origins of one of New England’s most chilling maritime mysteries.

About The Author: Jill Farinelli graduated from William Smith College with a bachelor of arts degree in American Studies and English. Determined to live near the ocean in a city steeped in history, she moved to the Boston area where, for the past twenty-five years, she has worked as a freelance writer and editor, primarily in educational publishing. This is her first work of historical nonfiction, on a subject that captured her imagination after spending a week with friends on Block Island ten years ago.

Q&A and book selling and signing after the event for those interested. Limited to 75 seats. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
