The 33 1/3 Club - Vinyl Records!
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The 33 1/3 Club

Ever look back and think about how listening to music was an activity all on its own?

Got Vinyl?

Bring in your own stack of vinyl records and share your favorites with other music enthusiasts.  If you can’t bring your own, check out the collection at the Townsend Public Library.  No matter what your taste in music, members of the Townsend Library 33 1/3 Club are enamored to spin and listen to those old familiar tunes to the most esoteric melodies.

Discussion will focus on, but certainly will not be limited to, the time period, the tracks, the album cover art and the artist.  Join in for a listen to this months edition.

Join Dave Schuttler, Bradley Sherwood  and Ward Clark for an evening of music and conversation!

Abstracted Views Art Exhibit

Abstracted Views by Rita Tavilla

The show is a collection of two mediums that have the common denominator of an abstracted interpretation.

Abstraction lends itself well to the viewer seeing her/his own individual view without worrying that viewer's vision is the same as the artist's.

Both are valid and both have value.

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 4th @ 11 - 12 noon.

Short Film Club hosted by Ward Clark
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Short Film Club

This Month's Feature Film "Merger"

Image result for keiichi matsuda merger

Keiichi Matsuda is back at filmmaking. Merger, his first narrative work since 2016’s viral short HYPER-REALITY, is online for good starting today, and in a short 4 minutes the piece artfully extends Matsuda’s existing ruminations on broad societal trends such as augmented reality, techno-capitalism, and the creeping gamification/optimization of life, while extending their expression to a new medium—360/VR.

Each month we watch a varirty of short films and discuss the good, the bad, and the just plain weird.

Bonus: WE HAVE SNACKS!

Join the Facebook Group for more fun!

Who is Ward Clark?

He is our local film buff! He has a permanent movie display in the library called "Ward's Picks". He uses his own rating system to recommend movies!

Hall of Presidents Book Club: Ulysses S. Grant
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Ulysses S. Grant by Josiah Bunting

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.

New England’s General Store - Book Talk with Ted Reinstein
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Book Talk with Ted Reinstein

Presentation - Followed by a Q&A and Book purchase and signing!

New England Notebook cover

The Quintessential New England Community Experience

The general store, as old as America itself, harkens back to a simpler time and a more innocent and rural nation. It was a homey and familiar place where you could buy the paper, penny candy, four-penny nails, or simply tarry on a cold winter morning over a cup of hot coffee with a neighbor or two. Long before “Cheers,” the general store was the vital and inviting heart of a community, where everyone not only knew your name, but how you took that coffee, how many kids you had, and how’s your dad doing, anyway? Then came a more urbanized and more mobile America, the rise of the chains stores, and then their giant offshoots, the big boxes. General stores seemed doomed, and many were. But a funny thing happened on the way to extinction: a renaissance. Co-authors Ted Reinstein and former ABC journalist Anne-Marie Dorning profile some of New England’s most beloved and longtime landmark stores, many of which have played out a real-life “Rocky,” rising up from the retail mat against seemingly overwhelming odds. It turns out that neighbors actually miss meeting up in the neighborhood. When it comes to a genuine gathering place, Costco doesn’t really cut it. But a general store still does. New England’s General Stores: Exploring an American Classic looks at how, where, and why this has all happened, by focusing on individual historic stores and their still-unfolding stories.

Ted Reinstein is best known in New England as a journalist and reporter for Chronicle, Boston’s celebrated (and America’s longest-running, locally-produced) TV news-magazine.

This event is brought to you by The TPL Endowment and the Friends of the Seniors

Tales from the Home of the World’s Worst Weather
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

TALES FROM THE HOME OF THE WORLD’S WORST WEATHER

Bitter cold, dense fog, heavy snow, and record winds: Mount Washington is known worldwide for its unpredictable and dangerous weather. For a mountain its size, why is Mt. Washington called the “Home of the World’s Worst Weather”?

Join Mount Washington Observatory's Will Broussard for an investigation into the unique life and work of weather observers stationed at the observatory year-round.

We will explore how the mountain's weather works and what it can tell us about New England’s own weather patterns. This program will include interactive demonstrations, weather instruments, stunning photography, and video footage from the summit. This exciting program is appropriate for adults and children alike.

Image may contain: cloud, sky, outdoor and nature

An infamous place of extremes, 6,288-foot Mount Washington, New Hampshire has been captivating audiences for hundreds of years.

While many places on Earth experience severe weather, few are inhabited by humans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Mount Washington Observatory has been operating a continuously-staffed scientific outpost on this remote peak since 1932, providing the Observatory many remarkable stories and an intimate knowledge of the mountain.

Through the years, the hardy men and women of the Observatory have experienced white-out blizzards, stunning 110-mile vistas, and everything in between. They have survived a 231mph wind gust, endless days of disorienting fog, and snow drifts more than 20 feet tall. They have worked with scientists and celebrities, students and snow rangers. They have amassed one of North America's longest continuous climate records, and developed an intimate understanding of the place known as the "Home of the World's Worst Weather."

Hall of Presidents Book Club: Rutherford B. Hayes
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Rutherford B. Hayes by Hans L. Trefousse
