CANCELLED!! Banned Book Club - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

3

CANCELLED!!!!

Did you know...

Harry Potter has been among the most frequently challenged books, as measured by the American Library Association?

In some parts of the United States and the United Kingdom, the Potter books have been banned from being read in school, taken out of libraries, and even burned in public.

Join us for this special Banned Book Club... We will have snacks and a lively discussion!

A book is “challenged” when a person or group objects to the materials and attempts to remove or restrict their accessibility. A book is “banned” when this removal is successful.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

Franklin Pierce by Michael F. Holt

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.

The White Mountain: A Year in the Life of Mount Washington

Image may contain: sky, cloud, ocean, outdoor and natureImage may contain: 1 person, smiling, sittingImage may contain: sky, cloud, snow, outdoor and nature

From the vaulted heights of New England’s highest peak, Dan spent a year exploring the very heart of the White Mountains. But Mt. Washington—home of the world’s worst weather—is more than just a Rock Pile, it’s the cultural and natural soul of climbers and tourists from around the world. From car races to bird watching, from bikes to motorcycles, from the railroad to the stars to a centuries old observatory, Mt. Washington speaks to the adventurer in all of us. In The White Mountain, Dan turned his veteran journalist’s eye toward participating in and exploring the culture, characters and color of this remarkable place.

Dan spent a year participating in and seeking the history of the ancient peak. From a 97 year old marathon runner to dressing as Walt Whitman and reading poetry up the mountain to spending a week in winter cooking for the scientists at the observatory, the mountain became Dan's inspiration and now Dan is bringing those stories back down to the flat lands.

Join him for a FREE presentation, slide show and book signing, and bring your own stories of Mount Washington to share.

Irish Genealogy Before 1800 with Tom Toohey
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Irish Genealogy Before 1800

Image result for genealogy
This program is about ancient Irish genealogists and the method of connecting the information in their chronicles with modern records.
It contains video, animation and sound and is designed to be entertaining as well as informative.
This presentation is especially valuable for researchers who have ancestors who came to the U.S. before 1800 and for those who have traced their ancestors to the 19th century but could not go back further.

Thomas M. Toohey
Bio

Tom Toohey is a modern day seanchaí (Irish storyteller) who has traveled to Ireland 16 times and collected hundreds of stories. While there, he met many local historians and learned a great deal about early Irish genealogists. He comes to this tradition naturally as his parents were great storytellers. In the last few years Tom has recorded his family stories in a four volume book called Images of Other Lives

For 40 years Tom was a teacher. He taught all levels from elementary school through graduate school as a public school teacher, adjunct professor and educational consultant. Tom has a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, a M.M. from the University of Hartford and 65 additional graduate credits in learning theory. From these experiences Tom developed presentation methods that are unique and effective. In retirement Tom has shared his knowledge and skills with genealogical organizations and historical societies.

Hall of Presidents Book Club: James Buchanan
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

James Buchanan by Jean H. Baker

Hall of Presidents Book Club: Andrew Johnson
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Andrew Johnson by Annette Gordon-Reed

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.
