Hall of Presidents Book Club: John Quincy Adams by Harlow Giles Unger
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

John Quincy Adams by Harlow Giles Unger

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.

Bark: Get to Know Your Trees
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Bark: Get to Know Your Trees

The traits typically used to describe trees—leaves, twigs, and buds—are often hard to see or seasonally absent. Join Michael for an exploration of bark, which is always visible, in any season. As you hone your perceptive abilities you will learn about a system for identifying tree species by their bark, and discover why such a variety of bark characteristics exist. Why do some species have smooth bark, while on others it is thick and broken? Why does bark peel?

Ages 10+

We will be going outside for a portion of this program.

Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring bug repellant as needed.

Michael will be available to sign copies of his books,

The 33 1/3 Club
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

The 33 1/3 Club

Ever look back and think about how listening to music was an activity all on its own?

Remember scouring over the artwork on the cover of your new vinyl LP and hoping the lyrics were printed on the inner sleeve.  Now is your chance to spin some vinyl on the turntable in a group setting and immerse yourself in the music.  The 33 1/2 club at the Townsend Public Library will meet and listen to classic LP's.

Discussion will focus on, but certainly will not be limited to, the time period, the tracks, the album cover art and the artist.  Join in for a listen to this months edition.

Join Dave Schuttler, Bradley Sherwood  and Ward Clark for an evening of music and conversation!

Miss Molly's Super Fantastic Book Club
3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

The Green Bicycle

by Haifaa al Mansour

Spunky eleven-year-old Wadjda lives in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with her parents. She desperately wants a bicycle so that she can race her friend Abdullah, even though it is considered improper for girls to ride bikes. Wadjda earns money for her dream bike by selling homemade bracelets and mixtapes of banned music to her classmates. But after she's caught, she’s forced to turn over a new leaf (sort of), or risk expulsion from school. Still, Wadjda keeps scheming, and with the bicycle so closely in her sights, she will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Set against the shifting social attitudes of the Middle East, The Green Bicycle explores gender roles, conformity, and the importance of family, all with wit and irresistible heart.

Join Miss Molly for this fun book club!

We will read all kinds of books;

fantasy, sci-fi, humor, realistic fiction, and historical fiction.

Typically ages 11-13 but if you're older or younger that's ok, everyone is welcome!

College Admissions

https://collegewise.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/collage-sidebars-21.jpg

We’ll discuss grades, test scores, activities, and everything else colleges evaluate.

Attendees will get straight answers about what college admissions committees really look for and how they ultimately decide who gets in.

And we think kids and parents will be pleasantly surprised to learn that kids don’t have to be trilingual, opera-singing, rocket scientists

to get into college today.

History of Heroes Lecture

Image result for first superman comic

005.jpeg

Andy Fish presents the history of the comic book and the importance and relevance of the super hero.

The superhero as we know it came to be in 1938 with the publication of Superman, but did you know Superman owes much of his origin story to Doc Savage and even Moses?

America was the first country to publish comic books-- they were a dime and larger than comics are today.

At their height of popularity during World War II sales where in the range of a half a billion copies.

Includes a display of comic books from the various era's of comics, The Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper Ages with a look at how certain characters evolved and remain with us today.

About Andy Fish

Andy is a noted comic book artist, illustrator and painter-- his work has been published all over the world and exhibited in galleries as far away as Sydney Australia.

One of his paintings is in the collection of the National Gallery in Washington DC.

He's kind of a big deal, at least according to his mom and she doesn't even know he's on Wikipedia.

ABOUT THE INDIAN HILL BIG BAND

Formed in 1998, the Indian Hill Big Band performs America’s greatest music at venues throughout Greater Boston, including fundraisers, community gatherings, town celebrations, and Independence Day festivities. The band is led by Jerry Sabatini, a trumpet player/ improviser/compose/educator who is well-known on the Boston jazz scene.

Several of the players are active professional musicians from the local area who perform regularly with orchestras, chorales, musical theater organizations, ethnic music ensembles, and other jazz groups. Many of them performed in college big bands, including MIT’s Festival Jazz Band and bands at Tufts, Indiana University, Dartmouth College, Oberlin College, SUNY Oswego, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. While most of the band members have active professional careers outside of music, they continue to perform for the pleasure of making good music and keeping the flame of big band jazz alive.

The Indian Hill Big Band is an ensemble at Indian Hill Music School in Littleton, MA, which offers private lessons and group experiences for all ages, styles, and levels.

7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House by John Meacham

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.

The Vintage Vocal Quartet
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

The Vintage Vocal Quartet brings to life the sweet harmonies of the big band era!

Image may contain: 4 people, people smiling, people sitting, shoes and indoor

If you love vocal harmony and swing music, the Vintage Vocal Quartet has your number!

The group's repertoire is inspired by groups like the Glenn Miller Orchestra's Modernaires, the Nat King Cole Trio, the Delta Rhythm Boys, the Andrews Sisters, and the Tommy Dorsey band's Pied Pipers. Singers who grew from this hothouse of vocal talent include Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, Connee Boswell, Jo Stafford, and so many more.

The four singers of the VVQ also play instruments, so they pack a big sound into a small package.
The members are:
Taylor O'Donnell - voice/piano
David Thorne Scott - voice/bass
Adam Gautille - voice/trumpet
Paul Pampinella - voice/guitar
This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, The Friends of the Seniors and The Amanda Dwight Entertainment Fund
