The 33 1/3 Club
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

The 33 1/3 Club

Ever look back and think about how listening to music was an activity all on its own?

Remember scouring over the artwork on the cover of your new vinyl LP and hoping the lyrics were printed on the inner sleeve.  Now is your chance to spin some vinyl on the turntable in a group setting and immerse yourself in the music.  The 33 1/2 club at the Townsend Public Library will meet and listen to classic LP's.

Discussion will focus on, but certainly will not be limited to, the time period, the tracks, the album cover art and the artist.  Join in for a listen to this months edition.

Join Dave Schuttler, Bradley Sherwood  and Ward Clark for an evening of music and conversation!

Zachary Taylor by John S. D Eisenhower

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.

The Yo-Yo People
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Who would have thought you could make an entire show out of yo-yos?

This husband and wife duo bring back that nostalgic toy, reminding you of old favorite tricks such as Walk the Dog and Rock the Baby, then amazing you with new and bizarre tricks, such as Boingy-Boingy and The Human Rollercoaster.

Yo-yos attached to bouncy balls, yo-yos with 10-foot strings, and multiple yo-yos looping while hula hooping and unicycling are just some of their finely tuned feats. High skill and deft timing to swingin' music coupled with high energy and sarcastic humor make the Yo-Yo People a favorite for every age.

As seen on David Letterman, they hold 4 Guinness World Records, a 2008 Yo-Yo World Champion title, and have performed in 26 countries!

Ukulele Scramble
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Ukulele Duo Serves Up Choice Tunes Freshly Scrambled

The Ukulele Scramble are Richard Perlmutter and Robin Hoffman. They sing and play rare, obscure and underperformed songs from the past 500 years; especially works from the Renaissance, and Parlor and Art Songs from the 19th Century. They update, revise and rewrite lyrics for many of these songs, often humorously, and perform them on ukuleles and other small stringed instruments. The group is based in Western Massachusetts.

the Ukulele Scramble, photo by Karen Gardner

Amherst, MA- The duo of Robin Hoffman and Richard Perlmutter, based in Western MA, sing and play ukuleles. Their new act, called The Ukulele Scramble is funny, entertaining, and masterful. It also starts with a repertoire that's unusual for ukulele players - classical music.

Robin and Richard love Beethoven, Bach and Mozart, as well as Renaissance music, and art and parlor songs. But as the name of their group implies, they don't exactly play it straight. The music they play is "scrambled." They pluck a piece by Beethoven like it's bluegrass, fingerpick a work by Mendelssohn like a folk song, and play an art song by composer Amy Beach like 50's pop. Many of their songs have new or updated lyrics by Richard, who is a 4x GRAMMY Nominee - earned for his witty lyrics set to classical music in his series of Beethoven's Wig albums. Ukulele Scramble songs are served up in a harmonious, humorous, and happy-go-lucky style that these two veterans bring to the stage.

Both Robin and Richard have had long careers in the performing arts. Individually they have performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Metropolitan Opera, Kennedy Center, Grammy Museum and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Before her current career as a ukulele player and instructor at Greenfield Community College, Robin was a professional ballet dancer with The Joffrey Ballet, and Metropolitan Opera. Richard has toured throughout North America with Beethoven's Wig, and plays classical piano, guitar, and mandolin. He has also produced music for GRAMMY AWARD winner Nickel Creek, and GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Winners Tom Paxton and Ella Jenkins.

While the Ukulele Scramble just started performing in the summer of 2017, Robin and Richard have been playing together for over three years. Along with singer and uke player Marlene Wong, they founded The Well Tempered Ukes, which specialized in Renaissance and Art Music. The group built a strong following playing throughout New England and New York at festivals, libraries and arts centers. When Marlene departed to pursue her passion for singing classical repertoire, Robin and Richard started scrambling and the Ukulele Scramble was born.

Looking to the future, Robin and Richard are lining up performances and have begun planning their first album. With so much music to scramble this ukulele duo has a recipe for success!

Millard Fillmore by Paul Finkelman

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.

Blizzards: Outwit the Elements
11:00 AM - 11:50 AM

Presented by the Boston Museum of Science

A blizzard is coming! Engineer a tree house to withstand high winds, and save skiers from a wild mountain avalanche. With two exciting activities, this hands-on workshop gives participants a chance to plan, build, and test their designs against the forces of nature.

In the first activity, participants design houses, trying to make them as snow-proof as possible. Their design is put to the test inside our Blizzard Box, which creates a whirling, swirling cascade of simulated snow. The house is inspected to see if the roof leaked and let the snow in. In the second activity, the participants are challenged to design an avalanche protection system using ramps, walls, poles, and other elements. They set up their system around a pint-size snowboarder, then test the results with a fast flood of plastic snow and boulders. The activities explore every part of the Engineering Design Process, including opportunities to use test results to modify the designs….…and then test them again and again!

Franklin Pierce by Michael F. Holt
