Wild Ireland with Thomas Toohey
6:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Wild Ireland

Wild Ireland is a presentation that is part travelogue and part myth by Thomas Toohey. It tells the stories of several “off the road” historic and mythological sites that he has visited in Ireland. These stories are examples of stories that could be interesting additions to any family history.

This program uses animation, video and music and is designed to be entertaining as well as informative. The program handout includes a list of sources that researchers can use to enhance their knowledge of family stories.

Tom Toohey is a modern day Irish storyteller who has traveled to Ireland 20 times and collected hundreds of stories. He comes to this tradition naturally as his parents were great storytellers. In the last few years Tom has recorded his family stories in a four volume book called Images of Other Lives.

Parent Support Group
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Parents and caregivers need a break sometimes. A time to pause, reflect, renew, and relax. The Townsend library is offering a new informal support group for just this reason. The group offers parents and caregivers a time to connect and chat about parenting challenges and strategies. All are welcome: parents, step-parents, guardians, grandparents, or anyone involved in raising children of any age. When possible we hope adults can attend on their own, but we know this is not always an option. We will have some quiet children's activities available, and the library has computers and toys children can play with. We can also provide Zoom access for those times you can't get out of the house. Just email Molly or Rebecca if you would like the Zoom link.

The group will meet on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 in the Storytime Room at the Townsend Public Library
Registration is appreciated, but not required.

The group will be run by Townsend’s Community Services Coordinator, Rebecca Morse. Rebecca will also be able to provide information about community resources that include housing, food, masshealth, fuel assistance, affordable connectivity programs (internet), addiction resources, etc. If you have any questions please reach out to Rebecca at: rmorse@townsendma.gov

VIRTUAL: How NASA Is Combating Climate Change
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

How NASA Is Combating Climate Change

The missions of NASA’s Earth Science Division help us to understand our planet’s interconnected systems, from a global scale down to minute processes.

The division delivers the technology, expertise, global observations, and applications that help us map the myriad connections between our planet’s vital processes and the climate effects of ongoing natural and human-caused changes.

Learn about the efforts of teams of NASA researches who are currently examining Earth to understand climate change, storms, fires, and where people fit in to all of it, including an active mission studying climate change in northern regions of the world (e.g., Alaska and Canada).

Led by Dr. Elizabeth Hoy, PhD, who has been a NASA scientist for over 10 years with the NASA Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems Office and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Studying Arctic systems since 2005, her research interests are in geography and disturbance mapping within the high northern latitude regions of North America where she utilizes GIS and remote sensing to understand aspects of environmental change.

Presented in collaboration with the Tewksbury Public Library

**PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.**

This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program.

Virtual - Haunted Experiences with Jeff DePaoli: Spooky World with creator David Bertolino
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

In 1991, Spooky World opened in Berlin, Massachusetts as the first Halloween scream park.

The attraction became so popular that it expanded well beyond its original haunted hayride and shaped a generation of New England Halloween lovers.

Join David Bertolino, the man who started it all, and Jeff DePaoli, Host of "That Halloween Podcast"

to hear how an idea became a Halloween institution in Massachusetts.

About Spooky World:

Spooky World first opened its doors in Berlin, Massachusetts back in 1991. The original horror scream park featured haunted houses, sideshow attractions, celebrities and a notorious haunted hayride. The park was soon after deemed New England's largest and most terrifying horror scream park, becoming a household name. Seven years later, Spooky World moved its location to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. In addition to Spooky World's terrifying and original hayride and haunted house creations, the scream park caught the eyes of Hollywood. Throughout the years, special guests to visit Spooky World included Cassandra Peterson as Elvira, Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger), Kane Hodder (Jason Vorhees), and musician Tiny Tim even got married live on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" at Spooky World.

About our Host:

Jeff DePaoli grew up in Woburn, Massachusetts and graduated from Emerson College with a B.F.A. in the Performing Arts. He has been obsessed with Halloween from a very early age, and it truly is his favorite day of the year. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California where he works as a segment producer with the world's largest Halloween and horror convention, Midsummer Scream. Jeff is an avid podcaster where he shares his love of Halloween with special guests on "That Halloween Podcast." He has been podcasting since 2014 when he launched his flagship show, "Dizney Coast to Coast." Jeff attends and reports on many Halloween and themed entertainment events throughout the year as a journalist for Attractions Magazine. As a voiceover artist, he has worked with Universal Pictures, Netflix, and is the host of the official Alexa Disney Trivia game on the Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition. He has always enjoyed hosting and was honored with the opportunity to host TEDx Culver City as well as numerous panels for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation and conventions. One of Jeff's more unique credits is his role as the Stage Manager of the Ed Sullivan Show in the Clint Eastwood film "Jersey Boys." You can learn more about Jeff's podcasts at www.DePodcastNetwork.com and follow @JeffDePaoli on social media.

NOTE: This session will be recorded and uploaded to the Ashland Library's YouTube Channel. All registrants will receive the video link soon after the program.

Virtual - Haunted Experiences with Jeff DePaoli: Barrett's Haunted Mansion
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

During most of the year Mary Barrett Costello is busy running her restaurant, the Abington Ale House, in Abington, Massachusetts.

But every Halloween season, things get considerably more scary behind the beloved restaurant. Barrett's Haunted Mansion is a labor of love for all involved.

Along with their two haunted houses that are changed each year, they also offer special nights like Bite & Fright, a Lights on Tour, and extreme nights for guests who don't mind being touched in total darkness for an extra scary experience.

Join owner, Mary Barrett Costello, and Jeff DePaoli, Host of "That Halloween Podcast", as they talk all about the history and creation of this local haunt.

Genograms: Discovering Medical Histories in Your Family Tree
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Genealogical research may hold the answers to questions you have about your family medical history.

Many health conditions tend to run in families. This reoccurrence is thought to be due to a combination of genetics, the environment, and personal lifestyle. A genogram is a detailed “family medical history pedigree” which can help track these diseases through multiple generations. This program will discuss how a genogram is constructed, highlight the types of genealogical records that may contain your ancestor’s vital health information, explore archaic (and sometimes funny) medical terminology from past centuries, and offer insights on how to approach living family members about their medical history.

Dr. Sarah J. Price Rosen has a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Biology and Chemistry from Denison University, a PhD in Molecular Genetics from Marshall University School of Medicine, and attended a two-year clinical fellowship in Clinical Molecular Genetics at Boston University School of Medicine. She has also earned certificates in Genealogical Studies and Investigative Genetic Genealogy. Her company, Cypher Genealogy, LLC, performs traditional historical genealogy as well as genetic genealogy to reconstruct family histories, find birth parents, or resolve probate disputes. Her areas of interest are migration patterns, Jewish genealogy, peerage, investigative genetic genealogy, and Afro-Caribbean research.

This program will be recorded. A link to the recording will be shared with everyone who registers and will be available for 30 days after the program.

NRWA Wild Inside: Semi-Aquatic Mammals Presentation
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

River Stories

How Otters, Beavers, Mink, and Muskrats Live and Thrive in Our

Wild & Scenic Rivers

The Nashua River was once one of the ten most polluted rivers in the United States, officially a dead river. Thanks to decades of advocacy by activist Marion Stoddard, stewardship by the organization she founded - the Nashua River Watershed Association - and the work of countless volunteers, the Nashua River and its tributaries are now a thriving wildlife hub.

Join us for a free interpretive presentation about the behavior and physical adaptations of four semi-aquatic mammals who depend on our nationally recognized Wild and Scenic Rivers: the Nashua, the Squannacook and the Nissitissit.

Using her locally filmed video and photographs, paired with footage from her network of motion sensitive cameras, NRWA Educator Gaynor Bigelbach will take participants behind the scenes of the lives of these fascinationg semi-aquatic mammals.

This program is funded by the generous support of gthe Nashua Rivers Wild & Scenic Stewardship Council

Author Talk with Harry P. Haldt III

Join us as we welcome author Harry P. Haldt III to discuss his new book Upper To'Gallants and Rusty Scuppers: Adventures of an Amateur Mariner. This book tells the story of Harry's father H. Peale Haldt Jr., an amateur mariner who spent the summers of his high school and college years in the 1930s crewing aboard freighters, sailing yachts and an international cruise liner on journeys that brought him around the world at the brink of World War II. This story was discovered and compiled from Harry's fathers diaries, photographs, corespondence, brochures and a variety of other sources nearly twenty years after his passing.

George W. Bush by James Mann

Join us as we read through the presidents of the United States!
The idea is to not only learn a few things, but to get a deeper understanding the role the presidency has played in this nation's history!
In the midst of a recent discussion, we came to the realization that our knowledge of much of American history was wanting. We decided to undertake a journey through the American presidency from beginning to end starting with George Washington, reading a biography of each president in the order they served. The hope is that this will acquaint us with not only each President, but also the history of the time in which they lived and died.
