Step back in time and connect with the radio shows that today's seniors grew up hearing in the 1940s and 1950s! This group meets biweekly to read classic scripts, and will perform at local personal care homes and in the library. With the help of our experienced group leader, we will be reenacting these shows as they were originally broadcast, including sound effects. This is a great group for teenagers interested in performance or media; adults who want to connect with the elders in our community; and anyone interested in the rich history of American popular culture.

Arnold Palmer: Homespun Stories of the King
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

About 40 miles east of Pittsburgh is the small town of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the place Arnold Palmer called home. The world knew Palmer as The King. But the Palmer Latrobe knew was funnier, goofier, saltier, and less grandiose than the one justifiably loved around the globe. In Arnold Palmer: Homespun Stories of the King, journalist, Latrobe resident, and accidental Palmer insider Chris Rodell draws upon over 100 interviews with the golf great conducted over 20 years, providing an intimate, charming, and at times irreverent glimpse at the icon outside the spotlight.

Celebrate the Rain! Rain Barrel Workshop
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Learn how to practice watershed protection and conservation in your own backyard. It’s easier than you think!

Water, a most precious resource – and available for the taking. Don’t miss out on an abundant, free supply of the earth’s most valuable resource–fresh, clean water! When you attend the Pennsylvania Resources Council’s (PRC) workshop you will learn how to harvest rainwater from your roof, store it, and use it in your landscape.

Raise your awareness of watersheds and watershed issues! While enjoying a free source of precious water you will be contributing to improved water quality in our rivers and streams, and reducing your contribution to combined sewer overflow (CSO), flooding, and polluted urban runoff.

PRC’s Celebrate the Rain! Watershed Awareness/Rain Barrel Workshop includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a FreeGarden RAIN 55-gallon, easy-to-install rain barrel. $80/person or $85/couple.

For information and/or to register contact Nancy at (412) 488-7490 X 247 Or register online at http://prc.org/programs/conservation-workshops/watershed-rain-barrels/

Miracle League of the South Hills
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The Miracle League of the South Hills brings the game of baseball to children who may have never had the opportunity to play on a real field. By building a custom-designed field with a cushioned rubberized surface to help prevent injuries, wheelchair accessible dugouts and a completely flat surface to eliminate any barriers to wheel-chair bound or visually impaired players, the field has eliminated the challenges that prevent many children from playing baseball.

Tim Gebhart, Executive Director of the Miracle League, will share stories of the life-changing work the League has done, and let you know how to get involved!

Drawing Concepts and Techniques: Week 1
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

WEEK 1: INTRODUCTION to the class; discussion of materials; understanding the five planes of light.

This 8 week session will teach the student how to apply the drawing concepts and techniques of the great Masters, specifically from the mid 16th century (Renaissance) to the mid 17th century (Baroque) in Europe. Students will examine the basic elements of drawing including Line, Value, Form and Composition. Specific drawing materials will be used such as soft vine charcoal or willow charcoal and conte crayon on toned papers.

Our instructor, James Sulkowski is a classical artist in the tradition of the Masters. His adherence to Old Master concepts and techniques gives his work both timeless and luminous qualities.

His dramatic effects of light and use of deep, rich color have attracted private, corporate and public collectors worldwide including former President and Mrs. George H.W. Bush, the Saudi Arabian Royal Family and the Metropolitan Opera of New York. James studied at the famed Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Carnegie-Mellon University and most notably with master artist Frank Mason at the Art Students League of New York.

This class runs September 11-October 30. Please register below - you are signing up for all 8 sessions.

Drawing Concepts and Techniques: Week 7
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

WEEK 7: HOW TO ACHIEVE A PORTRAIT LIKENESS of a person or a pet.
