Charlie Chaplin's 'Red Letter Days'
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

We are pleased to invite you to a special presentation by Pittsburgh mime artist and Chaplin expert Dan Kamin, who trained Robert Downey, Jr. for his Oscar-nominated performance in Chaplin and created Johnny Depp’s physical comedy routines in Benny and Joon.

Dan will introduce Charlie Chaplin’s Red Letter Days. This newly discovered eyewitness account reveals what was going on behind the scenes in Chaplin's fun factory as he was creating the hilarious comedies that rocketed him to worldwide fame. Written by Fred Goodwins, one of the actors in the company, the breezy narrative originally appeared in 1916 as a series of thirty-seven articles in the British magazine Red Letter.  Its republication marks a major find for cinema buffs and anyone who has ever been touched by Chaplin's artistry.  Dan annotated the book to highlight its many revelations about Chaplin and the familiar faces that populate his films.  In his talk, illustrated with colorful images, music and video from the period, Dan will reveal the backstory of this fascinating excursion into the private world of Hollywood’s first superstar.

Alexander Hamilton
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Todd DePastino offer a series on the man who is the subject of the record-breaking, smash-hit Broadway musical Hamilton, which virtually swept the Tony Awards and elevated our first Secretary of the Treasury to superstar status. Alexander Hamilton’s sudden emergence as a Founding Hero is strange considering how vilified and despised he was for two centuries after his death in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr in 1804. Come hear about how a Caribbean-born orphan whom John Adams reviled as a "bastard brat of a Scottish peddler” rose to become George Washington’s right-hand man in the American Revolution and the genius who envisioned the young United States as a future global superpower.

Limited spots are available, so registration is required. You are signing up for all four sessions: September 7, 14, 21, and October 5.

History of the Carnegie Library
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Andrew Carnegie founded the Carnegie Institute in 1896, which included a music hall, art museum, and science museum. Today his cultural institution has expanded to include a library, music hall, natural history museum, art museum, science center, the Andy Warhol Museum, and the Carnegie International art exhibition. In his history of the Carnegie Museums and Library of Pittsburgh, Gangewere details the political turmoil, budgetary constraints, and cultural tides that have influenced the caretakers and the collections. He profiles the benefactors, trustees, directors, and administrators who have stewarded the collections through the years and provided individual histories of the library, music hall, museums, and science center. Gangewere is a former editor of Carnegie Magazine and adjunct professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University.
