Called a "magnificently crafted story . . . brimming with wisdom" by Howard Frank Mosher in The Washington Post Book World, Crossing to Safety has, since its publication in 1987, established itself as one of the greatest and most cherished American novels of the twentieth century. Tracing the lives, loves, and aspirations of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin, it is a work of quiet majesty, deep compassion, and powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage.

"To those who...deny the human spirit, I give you these chroniclers of its joys and sorrows, light and dark, hope and despair and say that they have but liberated what is in us all. Their dancing notes say, 'Here it is! Humanity's real self. Look! Isn't it wondrous?"-- From a poem written about Aubrey and Elwood, "The Folk Singers" by Philip R. Pearson, Jr. in his book Poetry is to be Consumed, Vantage Press, New York

"I almost fainted when you sang and danced and played the banjo at the same time! My mouth was droped (sic) open the entire time."-- 4th graders, Chaplin Elementary School, Chaplin, CT

Aubrey says, “One of my favorite parts of our creative life is crafting shows right before the watchful eyes and ears of our audiences. As we survey the crowd, talk to people, and get a feel for our surroundings, we make snap decisions, selecting what song, dance, or instrument feels just right at that moment. We hope you enjoy this exciting foray into the oral traditions of American heritage music and dance!”

The Real St. Patrick and Who are the Celts?
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

The Real St. Patrick” with historian Bill Dunn

“Who are the Celts?” – film featuring Jennifer Paxton, PhD

VML Cultural Series, Wednesday, March 4, 2020, 6:30-7:45 p.m. (snow date is March 18), Ventress Library Plaza Program Room, free and open to the public; no tickets.

Join local historian and lecturer Bill Dunn as he explores the truth and myth surrounding the legendary St. Patrick. Did he banish all the snakes from Ireland? Did he bring Christianity to the Emerald Isle? Why is the color green associated with his holiday? Was St. Patrick even Irish? Come have your perceptions challenged by one who has made a practice of de-bunking popular beliefs. Come hear the lecture and learn the facts about this patron saint of the Irish Riviera!

And then…stay for the 33 minute film, “Who Are The Celts?” Professor Jennifer Paxton begins this lively history course by examining the common preconceptions about Celtic identity—before smashing them to bits. The first lecture paints the initial brushstrokes on the gargantuan canvas of this European culture most widely perceived as Scottish and Irish while promising much more.

Dr. Jennifer Paxton is Assistant Director of University Honors Program and Clinical Assistant Professor of History at The Catholic University of America. She was previously a Professorial Lecturer in History at Georgetown University, where she taught for more than a decade. The holder of a doctorate in history from Harvard University, where she has also taught and earned a Certificate of Distinction, Professor Paxton is both a widely published award-winning writer and a highly regarded scholar who contributes her knowledge and lively teaching style to “The Great Courses.” Stream the full course online for free, using your Marshfield library card as your key,  through the RBdigital website accessed through www.ventresslibrary.org.

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family's history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness,

As delightfully wry and witty as his bestselling debut, 'The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared', this is a tale of how one woman's attempt to change her future ended up changing everything. Nombeko Mayeki is on the run from the world's most ruthless secret service - with three Chinese sisters, twins who are officially one person and an elderly potato farmer. Oh, and the fate of the King of Sweden - and the world - rests on her shoulders.
