Sapiens:  A Brief History of Humankind.  by Yuval Noah Harari

Sapiens: A Brief History of HumankindMost books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.(Amazon)

Thrivers: Parent Book Discussion and Workshop with author, Michele Borba
8:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Thrivers

Join nationally recognized teacher, author, and educational consultant, Dr. Michele Borba, as we read and discuss her new book, Thrivers. Have you ever wondered why some thrive while others may not? According to Dr. Borba, thrivers are different. They flourish in our fast-paced, digital-driven, often uncertain world. Why? Dr. Borba combed scientific studies on resilience, spoke to dozens of researchers/experts in the field, and interviewed more than 100 young people from all walks of life, and she found something surprising: the difference between those who struggle and those who succeed comes down not to grades or test scores, but to seven character traits that set Thrivers apart. These thriver traits--confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance, and optimism-- allow kids to roll with the punches and succeed in life and can be taught to children at any age. In Thrivers, Dr. Borba offers practical, actionable ways to develop these traits in children from preschool through high school, showing how to teach kids how to cope today so they can thrive tomorrow! For parents of all ages, educators, and anyone interested in learning more.  Registration required. Hardcover books will be available for purchase for $5.00 or can be borrowed through the library system’s print and digital collections. Arrangements will be made for those who register to pick up the book.  The Zoom link will be emailed to registrants prior to the meeting date. Becoming.  by Michelle Obama

Becoming by [Michelle Obama]In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same. (Amazon)
