Nonfiction Book Discussion

The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

Date / Time:

Monday Jan 13, 2020
1:00 PM OR 7:00 PM

Go to details page Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.   Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle, Nonfiction Kindle Fire and Overdrive.  Large print and Audiobook versions may also available for checkout.

Sketch Comedy Workshop
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Like to laugh, and make others laugh, too? Then you'll enjoy the Sketch Comedy Workshop, led by comedy writer Sandy McKnight. The laughs start in the writing process, coming up with funny concepts, characters, situations and punchlines. Then comes the 'make 'em laugh' part, as you put the sketches 'on their feet' and get to show off your acting chops. Some people will gravitate to the writing side, others may love to do the acting, and some will want to do it all. Whichever role you choose, you're bound to have fun. We'll also watch some classic sketches from shows like Saturday Night Live, Carol Burnett, and Ernie Kovacs for motivation and additional chuckles. For adults and older teens, grades 11-12; please register.

Sandy McKnight has been Head Writer for live variety show Saturday Night Liv (with Liv Cummins), and TV series 24 Minutes From Blandford, for the last 18 years. He's also written for VH1, TMI Hollywood, and New York City's Secret Theater. His new memoir, Kid69, is available at Amazon.com. He also runs a Youth Theater camp at HVCC, and his music can be heard on Spotify, YouTube, and on radio, including area station WEXT 97.7. He and his band have done concerts locally at The Egg, The Linda and Round Lake Auditorium.

Thumbnail Code Name Lise: The Story of the Woman who Became WWII's Most Highly Decorated Spy by Larry Loftis

In Code Name: Lise, Larry Loftis paints a portrait of true courage, patriotism, and love—of two incredibly heroic people who endured unimaginable horrors and degradations. He seamlessly weaves together the touching romance between Odette and Peter and the thrilling cat and mouse game between them and Sergeant Bleicher. With this amazing testament to the human spirit, Loftis proves once again that he is adept at writing “nonfiction that reads like a page-turning novel” (Parade).  Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.

Varina by Charles Frazier:

Sooner or later, history asks, which side were you on? Her marriage prospects limited, teenage Varina Howell agrees to wed the much-older widower Jefferson Davis, with whom she expects the secure life of a Mississippi landowner. Davis instead pursues a career in politics and is eventually appointed president of the Confederacy, placing Varina at the white-hot center of one of the darkest moments in American history—culpable regardless of her intentions.

The Confederacy falling, her marriage in tatters, and the country divided, Varina and her children escape Richmond and travel south on their own, now fugitives with “bounties on their heads, an entire nation in pursuit.”

Intimate in its detailed observations of one woman’s tragic life and epic in its scope and power, Varina is a novel of an American war and its aftermath. Ultimately, the book is a portrait of a woman who comes to realize that complicity carries consequences.

The Confederacy falling, her marriage in tatters, and the country divided, Varina and her children escape Richmond and travel south on their own, now fugitives with “bounties on their heads, an entire nation in pursuit.” Intimate in its detailed observations of one woman’s tragic life and epic in its scope and power, Varina is a novel of an American war and its aftermath. Ultimately, the book is a portrait of a woman who comes to realize that complicity carries consequences.

The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

Date / Time:

Monday Jul 13, 2020
1:00 PM OR 7:00 PM

Go to details page  A Primate's Memoir: A Neuroscientist's Unconventional Live Among the Baboons by Robert M. Sapolsky

An exhilarating account of Sapolsky’s twenty-one-year study of a troop of rambunctious baboons in Kenya, A Primate’s Memoir interweaves serious scientific observations with wry commentary about the challenges and pleasures of living in the wilds of the Serengeti—for man and beast alike. Over two decades, Sapolsky survives culinary atrocities, gunpoint encounters, and a surreal kidnapping, while witnessing the encroachment of the tourist mentality on the farthest vestiges of unspoiled Africa. As he conducts unprecedented physiological research on wild primates, he becomes ever more enamored of his subjects—unique and compelling characters in their own right—and he returns to them summer after summer, until tragedy finally prevents him.

By turns hilarious and poignant, A Primate’s Memoir is a magnum opus from one of our foremost science writers.  Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.

A remarkable story set during Hitler’s rise to power. Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror. Nonfiction Book Discussion
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Nonfiction Book Discussion

The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

Date / Time:

Monday Nov 9, 2020
1:00 PM OR 7:00 PM

Go to details page The Last Pirate of New York: A Ghost Ship, a Killer, and the Birth of a Gangster Nation by Rich Cohen

Albert Hicks was a feared, shadowy figure of the New York underworld in the mid-1800s. Handsome and charismatic, he was known to frequent the dive bars and gin joints of the Five Points, the most dangerous neighborhood in maritime Manhattan. For years, he operated out of the public eye, rambling from crime to crime, working on the water, in ships, sleeping in the nickel-a-night flops, drinking in barrooms where rat-baiting and bear-baiting were great entertainments.

Long fascinated by gangster legends, Rich Cohen tells the story of this notorious underworld figure for the first time, from his humble origins to his incarnation as a demon who terrorized the Five Points and became the gangster most feared by other gangsters, at a time when pirates anchored off of 14th street.   Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.
