Outdoor Storytime-CANCELLED

                                                                                                     EventKeeper - Popup Event

Join Miss Katie for a fun, socially-distant outdoor storytime! We will be reading stories, rhymes, flannel stories, singing, and dancing all while outside in order to keep everyone healthy and safe. This is a registered event with limited spots, BUT, we will be live-streaming on Facebook Live so you can still participate remotely!

Please bring a blanket to use as your group spot. All groups must sit together and we ask that adults keep children with them in order to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Because this is an outdoor event, it will be dependent on the weather that day. If it is cancelled due to weather, we will still livestream on our Facebook page.

Teen Thursdays

Drop by the library this afternoon for a variety of activities you can take home or do on the library lawn!  We'll have crafts, coloring pages, writing prompts, board games, and snacks as well as a selection of YA books that you can browse and check out.

We will use the new outdoor area outside of the children's room enclosed by the white fence. Walk around the back of the building. You can take anything you want from the carts and then spread out on the lawn and hang out, or bring home.  In case of rain, we will have the cart under a pop-up tent so you can grab and go.

Be sure to wear a mask and social distance!

Present Moment, Prolific Moment: Using Mindfulness to Write

Writing can become much more fulfilling if we think of it as happening right Now. Much is lost when we overlook the present moment because we forfeit rewarding writing experiences in exchange for stress, frustration, boredom, fear, and shortchanged invention and creativity (it’s a poor bargain). Through mindfulness, we can reduce our writing apprehension and the writing blocks that come from future- or past-oriented thinking. Every moment can become a prolific moment: we can write more quickly and with greater ease of mind. In this presentation, we discuss writing tools that emerge when present time is highlighted: impermanence, audience demons, monkey mind self-talk, and preconceptions about writing ability and writing task. Participants will learn basic strategies to incorporate mindfulness into their writing lives.

Alexandria Peary serves as New Hampshire’s Poet Laureate. She holds MFAs in Poetry from the University of Iowa and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a PhD in English from the University of New Hampshire. She is the author of six books and over 150 shorter pieces in leading literary and scholarly journals. Her work has received the Iowa Poetry Prize, the Slope Editions Book Prize, and an Outstanding Book Award nomination from the Conference of College Composition and Communication. She specializes in helping others with problems in writing confidence and has developed a system of mindful writing that can be found in her book, Prolific Moment: Theory and Practice of Mindfulness for Writing (Routledge 2018), as well as in her 2019 TEDx talk, “How Mindfulness Can Transform the Way You Write." A former state policy analyst for National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), Alexandria serves as the History Editor at the Journal of Creative Writing Studies. She is a professor in the English Department at Salem State University and lives in Londonderry, NH, with her husband and two daughters.

All Eyes Are Upon Us: Racial Struggles in the Northeast, from Jackie Robinson to Deval Patrick

From Brooklyn to Boston, from World War II to the present, Jason Sokol traces the modern history of race and politics in the Northeast. Why did white fans come out to support Jackie Robinson as he broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947 even as Brooklyn’s blacks were shunted into segregated neighborhoods? How was African-American politician Ed Brooke of Massachusetts, who won a Senate seat in 1966, undone by the resistance to desegregation busing in Boston? Is the Northeast’s history a microcosm of America as a whole: outwardly democratic, but inwardly conflicted over race?

Jason Sokol is an Associate Professor of History at the University of New Hampshire. He is the author of two books: There Goes My Everything: White Southerners in the Age of Civil Rights and All Eyes Are Upon Us: Race and Politics from Boston to Brooklyn. He has held fellowships from Harvard, Penn, and Cornell, and both books have been reviewed in the Washington Post as well as the New York Times.
