Getting Started with Birdwatching

Join the Wadleigh Memorial Library on July 28th from 7-8 PM for Getting Started with Birdwatching, presented by Steve Hale from Open World Explorers. Less about the birds, this presentation provides valuable pointers, tips, and shortcuts for an interested person to quickly get the most out of birding and to become a skilled birder. Topics covered include binocular selection, field guide options (and how to use efficiently), best approaches to finding birds (where, when and how), and recommendations to heighten fun and lessen frustration. Come with your favorite binoculars and field guide to see how they compare.

About Steve:

Steve Hale holds university degrees in marine biology, evolutionary biology, and ecology.  He has lived in New Hampshire over 20 years and has explored most of the state.  An avid hiker, birder, and experienced naturalist, Steve loves to share his experience and knowledge with others. Years ago, Steve was a regular presenter at the Mt. Washington Hotel and the Balsams Resort, where he provided slideshows for the guests in the evening and then took them on birdwalks or ecotours in the morning (sometimes on snowshoes!).  All the tours included stories of the natural history of area and instruction on plant and animal identification.  Everyone enjoyed sharing their own stories too. Steve continues to  hike and birdwatch in northern New England, from the NH Seacoast where he lives to the mountains where he plays.  Steve formed Open World Explorers in April 2016 to more fully share his knowledge and experience  in ecology, ornithology, and Earth science to help others find personal value in the natural history and landscape of the area.  Steve's tours can go on foot, snowshoes, cross-country skis, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard.

This event will be offered both virtually and in-person.

Secret Stories Behind the World's Most Iconic Paintings

Join the Wadleigh Memorial Library on August 11, 2022, from 7-8 pm via Zoom for the last installment of our 6-part Culturally Curious Art Series, presented by Jane Oneail.

From American Gothic to Whistler’s Mother to Nighthawks, there are some images that are so ubiquitous in our culture that we have stopped looking at them closely. This program delves into these iconic works and shares the secret stories behind their creation and reception.

Jane Oneail curates and delivers art appreciation programs to audiences throughout New England and beyond. Jane holds a master’s in Art History from Boston University and a master’s in Education from Harvard University. A New Hampshire native, she has worked at some of the state's most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator. Jane has also taught at the college level for more than a decade, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University. For more information, visit iamculturallycurious.com

Liberty Is Our Motto: Songs and Stories of Hutchinson Family Singers

  Presenter: Steve Blunt

The year is 1876, and New Hampshire's own John Hutchinson sings and tells about his famous musical family "straight from the horse's mouth." Originally from Milford, NH, the Hutchinson Family       Singers were among America's most notable musical entertainers for much of the mid-19th century. They achieved international recognition with songs advancing social reform and political causes such   as abolition, temperance, women's suffrage, and the Lincoln presidential campaign of 1860. In this living history program, Steve Blunt portrays John Hutchinson. He tells the Hutchinsons' story and       shares their music with lyrics provided. Audience members are invited to sing along on "The Old Granite State," "Get Off the Track," "Tenting on the Old Campground," and more.

Funded by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities
