Virtual Valley Stream Book Club Meeting

VIRTUAL VALLEY STREAM BOOK CLUB MEETING -
ONE CHARMED CHRISTMAS, BY SHEILA ROBERTS

Author Sheila Roberts will be making a VIRTUAL VISIT to the Valley Stream Book Club Meeting.  All attendees will receive a recipe card and special message from Sheila Roberts.

An enchanting new Christmas novel from USA TODAY bestselling author Sheila Roberts, brimming with hope, love and humor.

Catherine Pine is hoping her Christmas is a bit more jolly than last year’s. That one was her first without her husband, and with her kids and their families absent this year, she’s worried. But things change when her good friend invites her on a Christmas cruise to lift her spirits. Suddenly every day is an adventure and she’s making a bunch of new friends, including the lovable Sophie Miles.

It’s like a gift from Santa when Sophie and Catherine meet the charming Dr. Rudy Nichols, a perfect match for hypochondriac Sophie. But he comes with a two-legged lump of coal, his guard-dog daughter. And then there’s chocolatier Trevor March, who’s also interested in the scrumptious Sophie. Can he convince her that chocolate is the perfect cure for what ails her? Who knows what Santa has in store for these holiday travelers? Anything could happen this charmed Christmas!

All are welcome.  A raffle will be held after the meeting to win a copy of One Charmed Christmas.

Registration is required by sending an e-mail to hwmlrefdesk@nassaulibrary.org or hwmlcontact@nassaulibrary.org and you will receive Zoom information for the meeting.  In addition, a hold will be placed for one of the limited number of copies available and you will be contacted to make an appointment for curbside pick-up of the book.

BOOK BUDDIES

Children, Grades 2-3

Join us for a Zoom book discussion. Registered participants will receive an email confirming registration and arranging a time for book pick up.
Participants should attempt to read the whole book before the date of the program.

Book: Wondrous Rex, by Patricia MacLachlan

About the book:

Newbery Medal-winning author Patricia MacLachlan has written a magical and funny tale about the joy found in using words, sharing stories, and loving a wondrous dog: Rex.

Grace’s aunt is a writer. She works with words every day and teaches Grace interesting words like “melancholy” and “delirious.”

But Lily is often “flummoxed” by her writing. Her stories don’t go anywhere, her desk is a mess, and her writer’s group can’t help.

So Lily posts an ad for an assistant: A writer of books needs an assistant, a coach, a helper, for inspiration and some magic!

The next day, Grace opens the door, and there is Rex: a Labrador retriever who will change Grace’s life, and Lily’s. The word “amazing” is an everyday word for Rex, who inspires Lily, and helps Grace find the words to write her own story.

Book: Things Seen From Aboveby Shelley Pearsall

About the book:

A shift in perspective can change everything.

This brilliant new novel from the author of The Seventh Most Important Thing celebrates kids who see the world a little differently.

April is looking for an escape from the sixth-grade lunch hour, which has become a social-scene nightmare, so she signs up to be a "buddy bench monitor" for the fourth graders' recess.

Joey Byrd is a boy on the fringes, who wanders the playground alone, dragging his foot through the dirt. But over time, April realizes that Joey isn't just making random circles. When you look at his designs from above, a story emerges... Joey's "bird's eye" drawings reveal what he observes and thinks about every day.

Told in alternating viewpoints--April's in text and Joey's mostly in art--the story gives the "whole picture" of what happens as these two outsiders find their rightful places.
