Rhythm of the Beach Drum Circle

IN PERSON - indoors or outside (weather permitting): Drumming with your hands and getting into the rhythm with the group can be therapeutic, hypnotic or just plain fun!  Bring your own drum or percussion instrument or borrow one of ours (supply of drums is limited).

This workshop is for beginner or experienced djembe drummers. Participants are also welcome to contribute to the group through the addition of sound layering using our percussion instruments (shakers, tamborines, rhythm sticks etc.

This group is presently meeting weekly indoors and as the warm weather arrives we plan to be outdoors through summer.    Regular attendance is recommended to build personal skill level and to progress with the group.  Please indicate upon registration whether you will bring your own djembe drum or use one of ours.  

It is suggested that participants keep a folding lawn chair in their trunk to be prepared for our opportunities to be outdoors whenever possible.  

Current max. registration of 15 people for the month of May.  There will be no group size restriction as we move to outdoors so please join the waiting list if interested in this program.  We will notify you as spaces become available.

Outdoor location: back lawn at WBPL.

ONLINE - Join your host Clearview Public Library with author Andrew Melnyk. The book by Melnyk, My Grandfather's Mill - Journey to Freedom is a true story: part history, part biography. It focuses on two families and their two infant children, Andrew and Chrystyna, born in Western Ukraine at the height of the Second World War. Their parents fought for Ukrainian independence throughout the years of Polish occupation, the invasion of Stalin's Bolshevik forces and during the years of Hitler's Nazi terror. Members of both their families were murdered by one or another of the occupying armies.

Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is a collaborative roleplaying game where you create and pretend to be your own unique character. Working together with your fellow players, your character will go on quests to save the day and it is up to the luck of the dice that determines if you succeed or not! 

Please have a character sheet ready to go for your first session.

Yoga and Mindfulness

IN-PERSON: Follow along as certified Yoga Teacher and Life Coach Nancy Cox, RYT (200) leads a fun and kid-friendly introduction to yoga and mindfulness. Nancy has been practicing yoga for 30 years and teaching for nearly 10. Kids classes and partner workshops are her favourite opportunities to teach yoga! She is passionate about helping children regulate their emotions. She infuses her practice with Brain Gym to help kids cope with stress and become calm, focused, and more energized. Classes will include a warm-up, poses and meditation. 

Children ages 5+. Bring a yoga mat or towel

Please be aware that the start time is actually when yoga begins. Be in the room on your mat before 4:45 pm. Coming in late disrupts the program.

IN-PERSON: Follow along as certified Yoga Teacher and Life Coach Nancy Cox, RYT (200) leads a fun and kid-friendly introduction to yoga and mindfulness. Nancy has been practicing yoga for 30 years and teaching for nearly 10. Kids classes and partner workshops are her favourite opportunities to teach yoga! She is passionate about helping children regulate their emotions. She infuses her practice with Brain Gym to help kids cope with stress and become calm, focused, and more energized. Classes will include a warm-up, poses and meditation. 

Children ages 5+. Bring a yoga mat or towel

Please be aware that the start time is actually when yoga begins. Be in the room on your mat before 4:45 pm. Coming in late disrupts the program.

Fine Art Series: Old Farmhouse

ONLINE - In this fun (and free!) two-hour painting class, local artist Jason Alexander will demonstrate how to paint the simple perspective of structures within a landscape setting. The subject of this month's class will be an abandoned farm structure.  Jason will discuss the “thick over thin” painting technique and the layering of colour from shadows to highlights. He will discuss and demonstrate soft and hard edges and colour blending. 

This class is suitable for beginners to experienced painters. All are welcome to participate with Jason and learn how to render the painting with step-by-step live painting demonstrations or feel free to watch the exciting creative process.

If painting along, you will need to gather the following:

Supply List:

- Paints: acrylic 60 ML Tubes of the following:

Simple Palette:  Yellow, Red, Blue, White, Black    OR

IN-PERSON A fabulous drag queen dramatically teaches us about diversity, reads books, and shares some tunes. Drag is an opportunity for all ages to reconsider the masks we are all forced to wear daily. Through dress-up, we help children see uniqueness without confusion or awkwardness. The drag queen population is frequently misrepresented, underrepresented or hidden by society. It shows children that anyone can dress in fun ways and be silly, serious or find a character that suits who they are. All are welcome.

Simcoe Author Talk Series: Victoria Butler

ONLINE - Wasaga Beach Public Library has joined literary forces with eleven other libraries (Ramara Public Library, Clearview Public Library, Essa Public Library, Innisfil Idea Lab & Library, New Tecumseth Public Library, Penetanguishene Public Library, Springwater Public Library, Collingwood Public Library, Barrie Public Library, and Midland Public Library) to offer a 2022 Author Talk Series.

Join your host, Innisfil Idea Lab & Library, with local author/poet Victoria Butler as she discusses her first book, Little Miracles.  Little Miracles is a poetic exploration of place, pain, and parking lots. The collection explores a myriad of human emotions through the eyes of a young woman who is fiercely dedicated to where she comes from, all while trying to figure out where she’s going.

About the author: Victoria Butler is a writer from Barrie, ON. She is the Poet Laureate of said hometown from 2018 until 2022 and is the first woman to carry the title. She is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of “The Northern Appeal,” a bi-annual, not-for-profit, literary journal that publishes work by creatives in Simcoe County and Muskoka.  She is currently completing her Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Toronto.

The collection explores a myriad of human emotions through the eyes of a young woman who is fiercely dedicated to where she comes from, all while trying to figure out where she’s going.

About the author: Victoria Butler is a writer from Barrie, ON. She is the Poet Laureate of said hometown from 2018 until 2022 and is the first woman to carry the title. She is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of “The Northern Appeal,” a bi-annual, not-for-profit, literary journal that publishes work by creatives in Simcoe County and Muskoka.  She is currently completing her Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Toronto.

ONLINE & IN-PERSONThe Writers Club of Wasaga Beach is open to adult writers 18 yrs+ engaged in all genres - poetry, memoir, short stories, novels, fiction, essays, blogs and non-fiction. Experienced and amateur writers are welcome to join three meeting every month to share writing, seek critiques and enjoy the creative process.

There will also be an online Zoom meeting on the first T
