I am Zelda: an original play

Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald is often known as the crazy wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of The Great Gatsby.  She was the glittering half of the Golden Couple of the 1920's and muse and inspiration for the flapper characters in Fitzgerald's Jazz Age stories.  This original play, will pay tribute to an often misunderstood woman; a women who battled schizophrenia for much of her life; a woman who was also a mother, an accomplished ballet dancer, an exhibited artist and a published writer.

Registration is suggested.  Rita Parisi founded her little production company, Waterfall Productions, in 2005 in order to create original theatrical presentations that entertain and inspire her audiences.

Thank you to Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation for funding this program!

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens (2018)  For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life—until the unthinkable happens.

The facilitator for this discussion is Mariette Ogg, retired U.S. Coast Guard Academy professor of english.

Book Discussion @ the Senior Center

Join Jill at the Waterford Senior Center as she leads the discussion of The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore (2017).  Multiple copies of this title are available at the library for check out.  This event is in partnership with Waterford Senior Services.  Join us!

The incredible true story of the women who fought America’s Undark danger.  The Curies’ newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark years of the First World War.  Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these “shining girls” are the luckiest alive — until they begin to fall mysteriously ill.  But the factories that once offered golden opportunities are now ignoring all claims of the gruesome side effects, and the women’s cries of corruption. And as the fatal poison of the radium takes hold, the brave shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America’s early 20th century, and in a groundbreaking battle for workers’ rights that will echo for centuries to come.

The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams (2021)  Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary.  As she grows up, Esme realizes that words and meanings relating to women’s and common folks’ experiences often go unrecorded. The Dictionary of Lost Words reveals a lost narrative, hidden between the lines of a history written by men. Inspired by actual events, author Pip Williams has delved into the archives of the Oxford English Dictionary to tell this highly original story.

This discussion is held in person.  Multiple copies of this title are available for check out  in the library.

Our facilitator for this discussion is Karen Wink, professor of english, U.S. Coast Guard.
