ONLINE It's in the cards: the art of Ludic story-writing
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

We welcome speculative fiction writers C. S. E. Cooney and Carlos Hernandez for an afternoon of fiction and poetry—and writing prompts! They will read from new works written off prompts using a bespoke card deck from their new tabletop roleplaying game-in-progress, Negocios Infernales. After, there will be a short presentation on how the game itself works. Then, using a virtual deck of the cards, they will give volunteers from the audience writing prompts of their own. In conclusion, they will answer any questions on writing and publishing books, game-design, teaching, and poetry. Bonus ukulele music for fun!

C.S.E. Cooney is the author of World Fantasy Award-winning Bone Swans: Stories. Her short novel The Twice-Drowned Saint is included in Mythic Delirium’s new anthology The Sinister Quartet, and her forthcoming novel Saint Death’s Daughter will be out with Rebellion in Spring of 2022.

Carlos Hernandez is the author of the Pura Belpré-award winning Sal and Gabi Break the Universe (2019), as well as its sequel, Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe (2020) and the short story collection The Assimilated Cuban's Guide to Quantum Santeria (2016). He is also a CUNY associate professor of English and a game writer and designer.

Online Teen Wabi Sabi: Zen Arts and Meditative Drawing

Wabi Sabi is a way of thinking about the world and art making that originated in 13th century Japan. It emphasizes the value of the incomplete, imperfect, and natural world. Participants will learn the practice of meditative drawing and haiku poetry. Meditative drawing improves our skills as illustrators AND has the added benefit of soothing anxiety. Haiku teaches observational skills and is a playful form of poetry.
