2018 One Book, One Region Discussion

In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet—sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors—doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price.  Multiple copies of the book are available in the library.

Please join us for this year's 2018 One Book, One Region Selection. Our facilitator is Dr. Lynne Rogers, a UConn professor of English and also a former Fulbright Scholar.  She has taught extensively at universities in Palestine and Lebanon before coming to teach at Avery Point.

CT Author's Trail Event with Jeff Turner

The next stop on the Connecticut Author's Trail is with Jeff Turner.  Jeff Turner has written for some of the largest publishing firms in the world.  Most recently, Jeff has shifted his writing focus to the craft of fiction and has published several novels, including The Way Back (2014) and The Hero of Willow Creek (2016).  His latest work, Lost Boys of the River Camp (2017), occurs in 1917 at a Junior Naval Reserve station in Uncasville, Connecticut.  The story is told through the eyes of a teenage cadet learning how to become a man during our nation’s call to arms.  Remember this is the100 year anniversary of the boys of New London, Waterford, Groton and Uncasville, all who made history by bringing Germany and its allies down to its knees.  For a number of these lads, their early training began at Camp Dewey.

Don't forget to bring your passport and get it stamped and, maybe win a prize!  The Trail ends with the finale at the Mohegan Sun on Thursday, September 20th at 6:15 p.m.
