THE TET OFFENSIVE @ 50

January 2018, marks the 50th anniversary of the TET Offensive.  TET was the largest and most important campaign of the Vietnam War.  Taking advantage of a cease-fire to celebrate the first day of the Vietnamese New Year, Vietcong fighters launched attacks against virtually every significant target in South Vietnam.  Although General Westmoreland correctly judged the attack to be a complete military failure the more immediate impact of TET was political.  TET re-energized the anti-war movement exploding all official assurances that America was winning in Vietnam and that the war would soon be over.

My Lai Massacre:

The nature of search and destroy missions exacerbated the violence of the Vietnam War.  Told to go into an area and clear it completely of any Vietnamese, platoon leaders quickly lost any distinction between the Viet Cong and the general Vietnamese population.  American policy had transformed all Vietnamese into the enemy. The ultimate consequences of such an attitude came in the village of My Lai.  That day, more than 350 Vietnamese villagers were murdered.  The only serviceman to be charged with this massacre was platoon leader Lt. William Calley.

No Registration required.

Author Doug VB Goudie

Doug "VB" Goudie will be talking about his new book, "A Frost in Hell: The True Story of the Petersham Butcher of 1875" which explores an infamous murder. The trial contained a first-of-its-kind appeal, and it resulted in a last-of-its-kind punishment. The story is as juicy today as it was in 1875 and is told by an author who grew up in that "never-heard-of-it" town.

Doug is a host on the Boston.com Morning show on WRKO and also spent 11 years in TV as a commentator on the Fox 25 Morning News show in Boston.

Copies of Doug's book will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

The Pentagon Papers

Secretly directed by Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, Daniel Ellsberg along with other policy analysts were asked to prepare a full review of American military and political involvement in Vietnam since the end of World War II.  What followed was a 7,000-page study revealing that American policymakers had systemically lied to the public, journalists and Congress about America involvement throughout all of Indochina since 1945.  “As a responsible citizen”, said Ellsberg, “I believed it to be my moral responsibility to leak the Papers to the press to end “a wrongful war.”  Ellsberg was subsequently charged under the Espionage Act of 1917 for conspiracy, espionage and theft of government property.
