Escape Room: Escape the Office

Do you have what it takes to escape?? The library's newest Escaoe Room is based on the hit tv show, The Office. Dwight Schrute has really done it this time. His well-intentioned goal of training his Dunder Mifflin co-wokers to survive the "worst case scenario" has backfired and left you in a perilous position. Your group need to discover the clues, solve the puzzles, and do it before time runs out.

This FREE escape room is open to families with school-aged children, teens and adults. Each Escape Room can accomodate up to 6 people but each individual must be registered and have their own ticket. Knowledge of The Office is not necessary to escape but will add to the enjoyment of the experience. This event will take place on various dates and times throughout April so choose the one that works best for you and get your FREE tickets today.

The Course will meet on Tuesdays, 7:00 – 8:15, starting April 9th through May 21st.  Attendance at all sessions is not required, but momentum will build from week to week.  There is no registration; each session will be limited to the first thirty participants.

The East India Company and the Boston Tea Party (with Tea!)

Danielle Beaudette from The Cozy Tea Cart in Brookline, NH will discuss the discovery of tea and its impact on history as early as the 1600's. She will discuss how tea impacted England, the East India Company, the Townshend Revenue Act, the Boston Massacre, the Tea Act of 1773, and of course let's not forget the Boston Tea Party. Also discussed will be the Intolerable Act, smugglers, and financial, technological and agricultural innovation, all brought about because of a simple cup of whole leaf tea! Tea samples that illustrate this history will also be available for tasting.

This lecture is part of the Westborough History Connections series, which this year asks, "How does history connect Westborough and India?"

Meditation

This 7-week Mindfulness Drop-In Course will offer opportunities for beginners and experienced meditators to learn about mindfulness and deepen their practice.  Each class will include instruction, extended practice, and time for discussion.  Topics will include: foundational practices such as breath meditation, body scan, and standing meditation; kindness, compassion, and forgiveness practices; contemplations for working with physical and emotional pain; and mindful eating exercises.  The class is open to those new to mindfulness meditation and also to those with experience.  Participants will gain the experience and confidence to cultivate their own personal at-home practice.

The Course will meet on Tuesdays, 7:00 – 8:15, starting April 9th through May 21st.  Attendance at all sessions is not required, but momentum will build from week to week.  There is no registration; each session will be limited to the first thirty participants.

Greg Topakian, Ph.D., is a long time educator and actuary.   Over the past thirty years, he has balanced his professional life with a daily practice of yoga and mindfulness meditation.   During that period Greg has participated in several long-term retreats to deepen his concentration and awareness.   He has facilitated a mindfulness group in his home for the last fifteen years, and has taught several multi-week Introduction to Mindfulness courses at the Westborough Library.   Now in semi-retirement, Greg teaches mindfulness to employees of local colleges, town governments, and corporations across the state.

For more information, please call the library at 508-366-3050.

Alice Paul: The Forgotten Suffragette

Party bosses long opposed the idea of women's suffrage.  It was associated with dangerous political reform and the concern that suddenly doubling the electorate might result in unwelcome social change as well.  Suffragists endured years of public ridicule and were often arrested and jailed. By the turn of the century however, with increasing numbers of women engaged in the workplace and especially with their important contributions in the First World War, women were granted the right to vote. In August 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment became part of the Constitution.

Sticky Business: The Boston Molasses Flood

In the early afternoon of January 15, 1919, a fifty-foot steel tank filled with over two million gallons of molasses collapsed in Boston's North End sending its sticky contents in a fifteen-foot wave through the neighborhood streets.  The disaster was blamed on immigrant anarchists.  The event knocked Prohibition and the end of World War I out of the headlines and resulted in a huge civil law suit that was not resolved until 1925.
