Speaker Series - Wingmasters

September 13th @ 6:30 pm

Julie Collier from Wingmasters : North American Birds of Prey

Birds of prey are also known as raptors, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means "to seize"). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks, falcons and owls, and this presentation, which incorporates 5-6 live birds of prey gives an overview of these different categories. The program is designed to explain predation, the birds' place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that WINGMASTERS cares for, and explains why these species face an uncertain future.

It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis

It Can’t Happen Here is the only one of Sinclair Lewis’s later novels to match the power of Main Street, Babbitt, and Arrowsmith. A cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, it is an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America.

Written during the Great Depression, when the country was largely oblivious to Hitler’s aggression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press.

Called “a message to thinking Americans” by the Springfield Republican when it was published in 1935, It Can’t Happen Here is a shockingly prescient novel that remains as fresh and contemporary as today’s news.

Fake News Presentation

Sniffing Out Fake News: The Phenomenon in the Era of President Trump with Dr. Kyle Moody

September 28th      6:30 pm Lang Auditorium

The Friends of the Westfield Athenaeum presents:

As the Trump administration addresses the topic of “fake news” through its communication, it is important to examine the role that "fake news" plays in our everyday lives. Join Assistant Professor Kyle Moody (Communications Media, Fitchburg State University) for a talk on fake news and media consumption in the 21st century. This will cover a wide variety of topics, ranging from the history of yellow journalism to the role that reporters play in media consumption and circulation, along with how news is spread and affects us all in our modern times. Finally, it will include a brief discussion of "what can we do?" that will cover some basic strategies for information literacy to enable us to become better consumers of news media.

Dr. Moody is an assistant professor of Communications Media at Fitchburg State University. His research interests include new media production and culture, along with how video game fans and consumers are involved in the production and     dissemination of fan and journalistic content. His ongoing research also includes online communities of users and players of video games, new media design, social media applications, ethnography, cultural studies, and media production.
